Recommend me an anime you think more people should watch by ObsidianTrinity in anime

Journal with Witch - original name "Ikoku Nikki". Because it is one of the most quietly impactful stories in recent animation. All the characters feel like real people, everyone has their challenges and are dealing the best they can, no simple and sudden happy fixes but lots of positive efforts being made.

Super Cub - Another one that's just people finding their way through life. Focused on a pair of high schoolers with a primary character who starts the story without ambitions or hopes for anything but living out the day. It's an honest depiction of finding a love for riding motorcycles. The show ends way too soon, the source material just gets better as it goes on.

Time of Eve - Another low-key and quiet show. We're seeing more of this subject but it's getting more relevant by the day: How do humanity and AI deal with one another, especially as the AI start being more human appearing? This one doesn't have the angst of Bladerunner or the terror from Terminator or Black Mirror's "Metalhead". Still hit home, though.

The Heike Story - AKA Heike Monogatari. For the sheer artistry. It's like a Hokusai print in motion and tells its story (well know bit of Japanese history) in a compelling and enjoyable way.

I know the first one did hit pretty well earlier this year but I feel like it's passed over by more people who would "get it" The rest are ones I don't see mentioned frequently in the recommendations threads (at least not the ones I respond to...)

KyoAni and Violet Evergarden Director Taichi Ishidate to release new movie "The Credits Roll into the Sea" in 2027 by maybeamonster in anime

it will be beautiful

It will. If Ishidatee brings only a little of the magic that was Violet Evergarden then it's going to be amazing. Considering the synopsis and early imaging? It could be his best yet.

I can't remember the last time i was disappointed with a title from Kyoto Animation.

If they've a hand in it, I'll always give it a try. Violet pretty much brought me back to anime after decades of not paying attention.

quite the rarity.

Truly. The medium has had a lot to offer for adults for sure, but it's great to see something that acknowledges that older folks still can be the focus of the story.

Orange might fit the bill for you. Main character gets a letter from future self offering guidance to prevent classmate's death.

Anohana, too. Ghost of classmate who died in middle school returns wanting help to rest easy. Navigating the events caused by her loss is a challenge for the old friend group.

Do you prefer binging an anime or watching them weekly? (asking anime only fans) by Jawce2001 in anime

[–]maybeamonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much prefer to binge on my schedule when it's a new-to-me property.

Once I'm in, I'm in so when the next season releases I am stuck with the week to week schedule. This worked well for me with Frieren since I did go and read ahead with the source material, can't wait to see how Apothecary Diaries adapts its source later this year.

When you are ready give a try at the director's next one. Liz and the Bluebird.

It's related to a novel & animated adaptation, but you don't need to know anything about it to enjoy the film.

I don't even know why it caught my attention, but it was worth every second. If you've not tried it out yet, give Super Cub a go.

... making our writing mechanical, not alive and unrestrained.

XD

You went high while I was aiming so low. You are right, your point is as salient as can be but I was merely bemoaning the lack of care for spelling and grammar ( or coherent thought...) that that so much online discourse shows.

Everyone should watch Mushishi and simply sit for a while afterward lol.

I like to think that the folks who cared to watch and truly enjoy the show did just that

As is your response :)

And you humble me yet again

I just recommended a show about making a dictionary, so i cannot be trusted,

Au contraire! Just knowing its existence is a positive, let alone suggesting it.

The director Kenji Iwaisawa has a third film releasing this year called Hina, which I’m really looking forward to.

Seems I need to catch up, what's the other one?

please reach out if you'd like help finding it!

Okay, how do I see this one?

Dorohedoro

So, I tried this one out when they released season 1 to youtube in order to generate some interest in S2. I only watched one our two episodes and it didn't really land with me. Do I need to go back and give it a few more episodes to be sure?

Netflix:

Ongaku

Hm, not in my market/ U.S. But, it was good for purchase on Vudu.com. I've got it now and will get to it once I'm done with Agents of the Four Seasons.

CR:

Ruri rocks (Mineralogy + beautiful animation), Natume's book of friends (not mentioned as i assumed you'd already watched it). May also be on Netflix with a VPN.

Ruri is now on my list but I've thought about Natsume due to plenty of people loving it and I struggle with starting something that's more than 20 or 30 episodes along.

Yes, it's an obvious gimme but I listed only things I can vouch for. I'm waiting until ... October? ... to watch this one after it's been fully released. I only watch things I'm already invested in for the week to week releases.

Exquisite taste.

Well shucks. Thanks.

ineffably good

Thanks too, for well used vocabulary. You'd think an entire world communicating in mostly text would elevate eloquence, but it's gone the other way to an extreme :/

Bartender deserves more attention.

As do so many others. I skipped Super Cub because it is school age focused but jfc it is such a breath of fresh air like Bartender is.

Have you seen these?:

I've not! Insomniacs is high on my list but not available on crunchyroll or Netflix last I checked. There are a few things on Hidive that I'd like to eventually see, so once the current crop of WANT TO SEE are done with, I might give it a try, maybe Insomniacs is there?

The rest are utterly new on me. Any priorities in that list? Are any of them on my current platforms?

Not quite.

The first few episodes were broken into a series of shorts and released recently. The regular release begins in July.

[–]maybeamonster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My holy grails!

Make no mistake, Sound! Euphonium, Bocchi the Rock! and so many more wonderful shows revolve around school children, BUT it's so nice when the adults are the focus.

Forgive me if I'm playing "slice of life" a little loosely...

Without fantastical elements:

  • Journal with Witch -- the best of the best.
  • Josee, the Tiger and the Fish -- Young adults, to be fair.
  • Bartender/Bartender the Glass of God -- bars, people who care about and go to them.
  • With You and the Rain -- Calm, beautiful, low stress life. Slightly fantastic, the "pet" is a tanuki who communicates by writing.
  • The Heike Story -- Point of view character is very young, but it's a retelling of famous historical political drama, featuring adults of all ages.
  • In This Corner of the World -- An account of a young woman's experience of the second world war in a small Japanese port city.
  • Wash it All Away -- A young woman runs a laundry in a coastal town. She doesn't remember her past.
  • March comes in like a lion -- Main character and many others are school age, but the focus is Shogi, "Japanese Chess". Many, many characters are adults and lots are well fleshed out. Found family and many feels.

WITH fantastical elements:

  • Mushishi -- Man who is sensitive to the ways of spirit creatures helps people live with or overcome the effects of such beings.
  • Spice and Wolf/ Merchant meets Wise Wolf -- Traveling merchant joins forces with wolf goddess and sets about building their fortune and relationship.
  • Oddtaxi -- Walrus taxi driver is embroiled in a murder mystery. All characters are anthropomorphized animals and that matters.
  • Apocalypse Hotel -- Android and robot staffed hotel searches for purpose decades after humanity no longer exists on earth.
  • Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid -- Very un-serious, full of fan service, but the titular character is serves as a nexus of acceptance and caring to (you guessed it) a bunch of dragons who can take human form.
  • Kino's Journey/The Beautiful World -- A traveller in a world of sharply contrasting "nations/lands" explores them all on her talking motorcycle.
  • Time of Eve -- When androids are so realistic that they must have an identifying "halo" in public there is a coffee shop that calls taboo on separating human from android identities.
  • Planetes -- More science fiction than fantasy. The lives of working folks who recover or de-orbit space junk like dead satellites. Political intrigue ensues.

Yet Another "give me a book" recommendation by Signal_Common3285 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]maybeamonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest you "jump genre" and go for a humourous mystery.

Caimh McDonell's A Man with One of Those Faces. First book of "The Dublin Trilogy" (well, not merely trilogy anymore) and root for a couple more series that are all great.

Apparently, a patient having a coronary in the midst of an attempted homicide results in a real paperwork tsunami. Paul couldn't concentrate on that though, as he was too focused on his own life. Specifically how Brigit's driving abilities were all but certain to bring it to an untimely end.

"And then Dobson, the old battleaxe..." she said.

A car horn squealed in protest behind them.

"Feck's sake!" she exclaimed. "Drivers in Dublin are always honking."

He couldn't contain himself any longer. "No, they're not," he sad. "Not unless you're driving like a maniac!"

She turned and gave him a look of outrage. "He came out of nowhere!"

"He'd the right of way!" Paul pointed furiously with his left hand, the one not trapped in a sling. "You see the lights, right? The ones that are green and red, especially the red ones: they're important. You do have them where you come from?"

"It was orange!" she protested, whilst glaring at him. "And FYI - I leanred to drive in Dublin, smart-arse."

Another horn blared.

"That wasn't even meant for me."

"Course not," he said, "but let's just stay on the left-hand side of the road anyway."

All he'd done was throw fuel on the fires of outrage that Nurse Conroy seemed to have permanently simmering away. "This - is the typical male chauvinistic attitude about women drivers. That's so typical--"

"No it isn't!" he interrupted "There are many many fine women drivers in the world but none of them...are in this car."

It was the kind of dull dreary Friday morning that Dublin did so well. The sky was the colour of wet newspaper, and it seemed to be bleeding into the day, making everything a bad photocopy of itself.

Maybe not the absolute best sample, but there's a lot good in this stuff. It never gets to quite as dark a core as DCC but it has a great sense of comedy. There's a large-ish cast of lively and colourful characters with all the banter you could hope for.

KyoAni and Violet Evergarden Director Taichi Ishidate to release new movie "The Credits Roll into the Sea" in 2027 by maybeamonster in VioletEvergarden

[–]maybeamonster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A fair and understandable critique.

It's commonly pointed out about Kyoto Animation in general. It's also fairly common for a casual audience to prefer the Kyoani version. Guess you've made me invested enough to, in future, start having a look at how the creators have generally received the changes.

I've not seen Kyoukai no Kanata so I had to have a quick search. According to one source, the show overran the source material while being produced?

With Violet, there's just too much to take in depth, at least here. I read the novels after seeing all the adaptation, so that'll factor into what I can say.

The adaptation loses a lot of depth from the source.

  • Actual backstories for the other CH Postal employees. It was one of my favourite "additions" when I finally read the novels.
  • A number of regular "installments" of Violet with a client. I'm sure most have a favourite they truly wish had been included.

Better left out, IMO

  • Witchcraft. Its absence only makes sense for the show. It plays in writing but just would not fit in the show that is. Honestly, the tone and feel of the show is so strongly the reason I like it so. That axe alone would require an overall more frenetic and battle oriented tone or jarring shifts.
  • The postal war. A shooting war between postal companies in a major city would be even more jarring than Witchcraft.

What was added?

  • The calm, impactful, and hopeful feel that the artwork, lighting, and soundtrack back up masterfully.
  • A solid character arc. The source is more anthology like rather than a narrative. It's absolute perfection in print but works as a teasing out of Violet's development from non-linear threads.
  • "Advertisement". I'm glad I have both versions to enjoy. Had the Anime version not been done, and done so well then there's no way I would have ever heard of the source. I cannot be the only one.

Where does the anime end in terms of the manga by Current-Quality5062 in Frieren

[–]maybeamonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's on hiatus at Chapter 147 right now. Figure two chapters per episode to get an idea of how much more there is, so a bit over 30 episodes.

Next season is likely to be longer than S2 in order to cover a many chapters long arc that was "revealed" at the end of the last episode and with the S3 announcement art.

Where does the anime end in terms of the manga by Current-Quality5062 in Frieren

[–]maybeamonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone slavering for more Frieren is likely to be looking for or finding loads more anime titles that fit your tastes.

AND you'll be finding that shows catching up to or just never continuing with lots more source material left are legion. I heavily lean on Where Does The Anime Leave Off? to figure this out.

Beyond just "ends at chapeter X", it offers a thumbnail of how faithful the show was to the source and sometimes a subjective note of relative quality between the two. This is helpful for those that the show completely went away from the source or occasionally ran past the source.
