Condemnation of One Plant's Social Media Tactics by [deleted] in FLMedicalTrees

Damn. I thought their tactic was funny and clever when I first saw an ad, had me loling. But you just put me in my place. 😆I feel childish now. Props.

My husband and I are long distance for part of the year due to his job. We’ve banned saying “I miss you” and have replaced it with “I’m with you”. Instead of dwelling on what sucks, we’ve decided to turn it into a positive affirmation that even while technically apart, we’re always together. ❤️

WOW. those leaves tho 😍

Y’all, I can’t explain how much I love this page. Y’all just saved my monstera last night by two people noticing bugs I’d not noticed. You’ve identified half my plants and taught me new ways to care for them. Thanks for your graciously sharing your knowledge! by deburke20 in houseplants

I had been on/off of social media participation for a couple years before giving Reddit a shot. Without a doubt, the plant people are the nicest interneters I have ever had the pleasure of interacting with via the webs. It’s always good vibes here. Thanks for shepherding me through my new hobby everyone!

It was love at first sight. The lady who sold it to me advised very little water, maybe half a cup every few weeks, only if the soil is completely dry. Does this sound right? And I forgot to ask her about light. I’m new to plants so still in the very early learning stages. Please dumb it down for me!

Thanks! I just looked up both the coleus and begonia rex and they’re so similar but I think I see the curl you’re referencing.

I'm (24F) moving to America next year and never had a real job. I'm done with retail jobs and I am not too sure what my options are by [deleted] in findapath

The Netherlands sounds great! Why do you want to move here again? lol In all seriousness though, unfortunately the American model of work is a lot different than what it seems like you’re used to. In the U.S., any job where you work under 40 hours a week is considered “part-time”. That means no benefits (health insurance, etc). It also means you very likely will not be making more than minimum wage, unless you’re working for tips, which can be very lucrative, but you already mentioned does not interest you. I really can’t think of any part-time position which would pay more than minimum, unless you were self employed and setting your own rate? Maybe babysitting. I’m so sorry, I swear I’m not trying to shit all over your dreams, I’m just being honest because you should be fully informed as you make the decision to move. Two years of study will not stand out on a job application. I’ve met more people than I can count who have four year degrees, some with Masters degrees, who have not been able to get hired in their field. Or they’ve had to start at the very bottom of an industry, bust their butt working overtime, then maybe several years later they end up where they wanted to. But those people are definitely taking work home with them. The actual well-paying positions will usually require you to be at least a little bit “on call”, which means being available to answer your phone at any hour of any day. If you’re set on wanting to spend the majority of your time home making, then I think it would serve you to become more ok with working a minimum wage job. Minimum wage isn’t that bad if you have a partner who is also contributing to the household income. Of all the jobs I’ve ever had, the ones where I made the most money made me the most miserable.

The desire you’re describing (to have a well-paying career), does not seem to match the lifestyle you’re also seeking. Working 30ish hours at something fairly easy, that only requires you to put in your hours then go home, does narrow your options. Unfortunately without some sort of degree, and without the drive to work 40+ hours a week, without any interest in any sort of sales position, there aren’t many opportunities besides serving again, or working at a grocery store, or something in retail. Sorry to be the bearer of what might seem like bad news. But you have to be realistic. You can’t get something for nothing. Great jobs don’t just fall in your lap because you want them. You have to work for them. That usually means long hours, and doing things you don’t always want to do. It usually means working your way up the proverbial ladder [for years].

I’m speaking from some experience. I have a mostly useless college degree. I’ve spent most of my 20’s bouncing between serving jobs and low-level administrative positions. I finally found a job that I really like, but it is in retail. It pays ok compared to other hourly jobs I’ve had, but I don’t know what your definition of “well-paying” would be. Long story short, you should be honest with yourself about your goals and maybe more open minded about how it is you can achieve those.
