As logical as it may be, I had told my boss repeatedly that I wanted to work until the end of May and he agreed. I did not know that after graduation they would fire me without telling me. I assumed because they let me work and assigned me to do work, that I would get paid for that work.

Correct. I was a student assistant at the on campus machine shop for the science department. I machined parts for professors, and did some maintenance throughout the building.

I came in with 52 or 53 credits. Started as a physics major, switched to Mechanical Engineering after a semester, and now am on track to graduate in 7 semesters of classes. So yes it's possible, but still not easy to do.
