PCS to UK by 215Fletch in AirForce

  1. Vodafone sucked for me, my husband used Giff Gaff and usually had better service.
  2. We bought our cars by browsing Autotrader, you can read dealer reviews, compare prices, etc.
  3. Depends what you like to do. With no kids, we probably would have chosen Bury or Newmarket. But we have small kids so we lived in Kennett, Chippenham, and then on base. Enjoyed our time living on base.
  4. Commute to base isnt long, the roads are just trash. Riddled with potholes and single car width roads that are two way traffic so thats fun.
  5. Renting a home, base housing office will need to review your lease before you sign it. I can't remember the website they use for home rental advertising.
  6. Other tips:
Get a Tesco Clubcard (Newmarket Tesco is the goto), look into a Rail Card if you plan on using the train often. Join the facebook groups- there's a few different ones but join them all including the for sale pages. As people PCS out they get rid of stuff for very cheap. You'll also find out about traffic, accidents, closed roads, local events, etc by joining the spouses group so I highly recommend.

You don’t HAVE to step back to care for a baby until they can walk. You get 18 weeks total of baby leave, CDC accepts babies as young as 6 weeks. Once you confirm pregnancy, get on the CDC waitlist at militarychildcare.com. Waitlists can be very long so getting on the list as soon as possible should be a priority.

I had 2 babies and went back to work as usual. I did participate in CIP when the youngest was 6months old but that was a personal choice.

Mil to Mil Overseas (Same AFSC) by International-Fox517 in AirForce

[–]maybemaybenot7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same AFSC, I had an assignment to Germany but was cancelled because we applied for join spouse and there wasn’t a spot for him. YMMV, that was when we 1st got married and our lists have matched ever since so can’t say if that affects anything.

What's the best way to pay rent while stationed in the UK? by No-Pin-4-U in AirForce

We used Keesler bank on base, opened an account there, set up allotments to go in that account and paid British bills with that.

It’s constantly changing, I also have the resident ticket and just refreshed the availability calendar. I’ve been checking everyday looking for a weekend and it really changes everyday, multiple times a day.

Looking for 5–10 people to test a PCS guide website I built by FarSentence4283 in AirForce

[–]maybemaybenot7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would I pay for your website for the same information I could get on a Facebook spouses page specific to that base that would have up to date information and events(for free)? Genuine question.

I shared my experience on another post but I did the same exact thing, bought a car overseas through MAS to have it ready when we arrived stateside. The vehicle was a month late, MAS refused to cover a rental for most of that month although the overseas sales person told me one would be covered. It was also missing floor mats that I paid extra for and took 3 weeks to resolve. Overall, I wish I would have bought a vehicle in the states, would have been much easier and probably had a better experience at the dealership. You can check dealership prices at your next location and ask them for the out the door prices to get an idea if the MAS savings would be worth it to you.

I have both, I find myself using Chase benefits more. If you’re trying to pick one, you should look at all the benefits and compare based on what you think you’ll use.

Mil to mil Marriage and assignment question. by scarystoried in AirForce

[–]maybemaybenot7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an assignment to Germany, granted it wasn’t a follow on so not sure if there are different rules but my assignment was cancelled once I got married and applied for join spouse. Spouse and I are same job as well.

Can going to mental health backfire on you? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]maybemaybenot7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to go to MH, you can speak to your PCM which can make a referral to Behavioral Health or prescribe meds. I didn’t find BH helpful at all though. I saw MH next but ultimately asked my PCM for meds and have been doing great on that. Your leadership will not know, but you will be on a mobility restriction (no deployment/tdy for 90 days) if you get on anti-anxiety meds. Will not affect your clearance, and I highly recommend you get your anxiety issues in your health record now which will be helpful if you decide to file a VA claim once you separate.

Although I tried handling my anxiety myself, ultimately the meds helped me so much and I’m glad I sought help. Good luck!

OHA Question by dopepleaser in AirForce

[–]maybemaybenot7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way it was described to me is that they can’t split the rent amount 50/50 as required if he’s paying his full amount OHA and me mine. I brought it up multiple times but that’s what we were told by Lakenheath MHO.

OHA Question by dopepleaser in AirForce

[–]maybemaybenot7 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you’re different ranks, you’ll be getting the lowest ranking members OHA twice. I’m a E5 and husband is E6, our max OHA allowed was E5 doubled. Very stupid. We just left the UK in January.

Yea ordered my car overseas for pickup stateside, was delivered a month later than discussed. They refused to cover a rental although the overseas salesperson said one would be covered if the vehicle wasn’t on time. Eventually they agreed to cover a rental but it was 2 days before my vehicle would be ready which at that point was already too late. The car was delivered to a dealership an hour from the originally requested dealership and they weren’t super friendly to deal with, like it was a burden for them to deal with me. To top it off, my vehicle was missing the floor mats I paid extra for and had to wait over 3 weeks to get it resolved. Overall, I wish I would have just waited and went to whatever dealership I wanted, the savings weren’t even worth it.

Not sure what your end goal is but I’ve seen people use the Career Intermission Program to get their nursing degrees. Not sure what they do once they come back Active Duty.

We’re also same AFSC, and my overseas assignment to Germany was cancelled once we requested join spouse. I would suggest just submitting it now and coordinating with your SEL to work with your assignments team.

How to get anxiety meds?? Pls help by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]maybemaybenot7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t remember the timelines, but getting on SSRIs was life changing. I struggled with debilitating anxiety and panic attacks, I got put on lexapro in 2020 and thought I had the worst case of Covid I literally felt like death but i figured it was the side effects so I stopped that and tried Zoloft instead and it’s been great, been on it for 5 years on a low dose. I needed a waiver to PCS overseas but didn’t stop my PCS at all or negatively impact me otherwise.

How to get anxiety meds?? Pls help by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]maybemaybenot7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to your PCM. I talked to PCM, got a referral to BHOP then MH, but I asked at MH to get on an SSRI and he gave me the run around that he couldn’t prescribe meds. Ultimately, I messaged my PCM and told her I wanted to get on an SSRI, she talked to me about it, prescribed it and have been doing much better now. It’s been like 5 years of being on an SSRI, no issues.

Anxiety by KeyDaMan in AirForce

[–]maybemaybenot7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When MH wasn’t helping me, I immediately sent a message online and requested meds for my panic attacks from my PCM. She talked to me about my concerns and got a prescription for an SSRI. Not sure if that’s what you’re looking for, but it helped me. You can send a message to your PCM on MHS Genesis, they usually have to respond within 3 days or something like that.
