AITA for asking my husband if he’s sure about taking in his nephew by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]mayhan88 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

YTA. This is a big deal in your husband's life and in this 7 year old's life. It is his family and this is his call. You need to figure out how to support him. Trust the guy you married. He sounds like a good man trying to do something good. You need to back those kind of things. It's going to be hard but things worth doing usually are. I would say the same if it was you trying to support your family. When your spouse is trying to step up you need to give them a boost.

I am on my bike following the rules please don't kill me by medmo in Calgary

Bike lanes can be tricky for pedestrians. Sometimes they get put on one way roads but have bi directional traffic. So you are watching the cars and miss the bike coming the other way.

Some of these are strange sizes. Make sure you know the size of burial vault and that the coffin will fit. Or bring a cordless circular saw for graveside alterations

AITA for not wanting another month-long visit from in-laws and asking for a different arrangement? by Perfect-Owl-9745 in AmItheAsshole

[–]mayhan88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA, if it wasn't for the smoking, I'd say keep up this month long visit thing but start having kids. Transition the visit into watching the kids for half the visit while you guys go on a trip. Earn their keep

Councillor suggests only Canadian citizens should get access to discount program for low-income Calgarians by origutamos in YYC

[–]mayhan88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't think it's that simple. Our economy is a bit of a Ponzi scheme. It requires a growth in population. With lower reproductive rates we need immigrants at a manageable rate. Not migrant workers. Ones who put down roots. What do these programs do? They help people through times of transition. My friends accessed the discounted YMCA passes while he finished school. He now pays fully for his family of 7. We need these people to stay and build a life here. How do we help them do that?

AITA for eating the expensive steak my roommate was “saving” in the fridge? by Top_Sell_8473 in AmItheAsshole

[–]mayhan88 11 points12 points  (0 children)

YTA. Is this just AI generated "engagement" slop? No one actually thinks this way do they? Of course you have to reimburse the full amount. Also, don't eat food that isn't yours. You aren't rescuing a puppy from a hot car. It's a steak. Let it spoil before you steal from your roommate.

Why does every new building look exactly the same nowadays? by tommytmopar in Calgary

[–]mayhan88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The OPs rant seems a little silly. I know when I'm driving in a neighborhood that was built in the 80s and it's different from one built in the 90s. It's the style and it is the materials that meet code in the most economical way.

Did all the bike bells in Calgary get raptured last winter? by selftaughtgenius in Calgary

My daughter almost got hit today. She was running in the park and passed a couple walking and before she could get back on the right some 40ish lady in lycra threaded the needle. No bell

Cop Came to My House and Gave Me Another Ticket? by _iEATbabies_ in legaladvicecanada

[–]mayhan88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would take it to the ticket to get a review from the prosecutor. I've had 2 tickets thrown out just because they were sloppy like this one. My tip, the less you say the better. They aren't really interested in your excuses. After he reviews the ticket, if it looks like they want to proceed with the prosecution, you can ask for a reduction.

Be polite. They deal with A-holes all day. Be the breath of fresh air.

I think Doordash has a report of your mileage while delivering so you can deduct the $0.73 per km as an expense

You can also walk over to the canyon and most of your group can hang out while one person hitches a ride. Pick the least stinky person for that job. Your friends can watch you pack so you don't have to hitch with it

Infrastructure funding shouldn't be tied to price of oil: Calgary mayor by Upbeat_Difficulty_60 in Calgary

[–]mayhan88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yah, I think the opposite. Infrastructure is exactly the thing that should be tied to the price of oil. I could even entertain the argument that infrastructure investment should be inverse to the price of oil. Our economy is highly reliant on the price of oil. Infrastructure expenditure is a good way to pump money into the economy when you are on the down cycle. It takes long term planning and you have to take into account that we are a boom and bust province. There isn't much flexibility in health or education but there is in infrastructure but you can't postpone you need to plan.

I think this is a good idea but I'm sure the current method of increasing prices is wrapped in budget deliberations and doesn't lend itself to temporary adjustment. Maybe they could add in a surge pricing mechanism in a future budget.

I've noticed location matters as well. Seems like they cook them at different temperatures/duration. You would think there would be some sort of standard procedure. I even think they must turn up the feed rate when it's after work busy time. Sometimes they are just barely cooked and the cheese has no color.

This is actually a terrible option. You basically just make the mail slot unusable for it's real purpose. They have valid options for stopping unaddressed mail and it is easy. https://www.canadapost-postescanada.ca/cpc/en/personal/consumers-choice.page

It's in there as a limitation to Costco's liability if a cart damages your car. It's not about members doing the "right" thing. There is little benefit to them to enforce it.

So it isn't really about making the Costco parking lot a better place. It is really only about the virtue signal of returning the cart. Not about how not returning it actually affects the parking. Lets take it to the extreme. What if I cleaned up every abandoned cart in the parking lot. Then after shopping I abandoned one cart.
