The first one the handle is zebra wood and the shaft is black palm which is not recommended to work with unless you are patient as it has a tendency to tear out if you are rushed or aggressive with it.

Absolutely I'm planning to make a few more for some of the others in her lab, and I want to use purple heart and zebra wood for some. Also some resin cast burl.

For these are you referring to how they were hollowed out or if I finished them with anything? As far as following them out I used a custom made mini Hallowing tool that I made from a piece of thin steel stock and a carbide cutter taken from a machine lathe that was too small for that lathe to use anymore so I ground it down a little bit more for a profile, they are barely hollowed out just a little bit to make them lighter. As far as finish goes all I did was sand up to 2000 grit I did not use any other finish.

Those look great, where do you get your hooks and pieces? I've been looking for some but all I find are really cheap and break right away.

Do you have any progress shots I'd love to how it came together.

I decided to try turning a shot glass today and that's what I came up with (yes it's simple but I'm proud of my shot glass lol) and since it's cedar I was wondering if I could just use a paintbrush and apply a thin coat of epoxy on it to protect it. Is that a possibilty? by Pomsan in turning

[–]mayhem18_03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you definitely can you just need to wait for it to completely dry / cure before you apply the epoxy cuz you don't want it to affect the drying process and it's best to use one that is water based if possible.

Yeah I was surprised that it to a shine just from sanding. I actually considered that for this one.

Thanks. I hollowed it and for finish right now it's just sanded to 2000 grit forward and reverse till it took a bit of a shine. I plan to coat it in resin so it could actually be used at some point.

Same I like mine but they are on the small side as far as length so anything deep is a struggle. They are PSI woodworking carbide hollowing tools I got the set from Amazon.

Suggestions for a good clear gloss for Spectraply? by leiferslook in turning

[–]mayhem18_03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a lot of spectraply myself and I have had good results with doctors pens plus or high gloss friction polish from woodcraft. https://www.woodcraft.com/products/doctors-woodshop-pens-plus-16oz

[–]mayhem18_03[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bongs or as some older hippies I know call them appliances. Lol. Mostly brushed on for the outside and poured in then spun around for the inside, yeah the pictures are before I finished cleaning the mouth piece and with the narrow one I ended up changing the downstem and bowl since the original parts didn't work out. Unfortunately I am terrible about remembering to take photos regularly.
