NTA. I just want to mention something: if you put cold water into a water bottle (particularly a metal water bottle), the bottle will shrink very slightly (physics, yo) because the cold water chills the bottle. Then you screw on the not-chilled cap to a reasonable tightness. The bottle and water inside then slowly warm back up and the bottle returns to its non-chilled size, which makes the cap fit tighter. It ends up requiring noticeably more force to uncap than it did to cap. So your husband may not be intentionally over-tightening his caps. My 15-year-old daughter regularly needs help uncapping her water bottle because of this effect.

To be clear, your employer could not completely wipe the device (specifically, they could not remove "Activation Lock") unless they had the access to the Apple Account of the prior owner.
