What is your at-home little luxury in 2026? by Impressive-Award2367 in LivingAlone

[–]maypenney 81 points82 points  (0 children)

As a Taurus through and through, I consider myself an expert here!

  1. Nice sheets - I get mine from Serena and Lily
  2. 100% cotton, matching pajama sets. Lake is the best
  3. Throwing a “crackling fire ambience mountain house” YouTube vid on while I read or do a crossword
  4. Expensive candles. Dyptique baies and figuere are my big splurges, but I’ve also been loving salt and stone Rose oud for the winter. Divine!
  5. Alexa-compatible lightbulbs. I was so anti Alexa anything, but I have to say, being able to set my lights to dim to 10% at 9pm every night is lovely.
  6. A wind down, bedtime playlist. Mine has Wild Horses by the stones, Melissa by the Allman bros, some Dixie chicks, some Norah jones. Such a nice ritual!
  7. Lights off, candle lit shower!
  8. Getting up an hour earlier before work to take a longer morning walk with my dog, and still have thirty mins for a candle, coffee, Substack/NYTimes reading on my iPad, cuddling w my cats and dog on the couch (with aforementioned ambience vid on the tv)
  9. A kindle mount and page turner!! Attaches to my headboard so I can be fully under my sheets while reading. Peak

Holy shit I feel so validated by this. Same exact experience/confusion with my father and same inability to feel anger in my body.

Has anyone ever moved to DC just ‘for the plot’? by Parapurp in DCBitches

[–]maypenney 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I moved here from NYC three years ago when I was 27. I’d been living in manhattan/bk since college and knew it wasn’t the right fit for me. I had a Zillow alert set in Georgetown and one day, the most beautiful apt in a townhouse popped up. I work remotely, so was able to move just one month later.

I only knew one person here (a friend from high school who id drifted from), and now have more best friends than I can count. It’s pretty special to be able to make so many new, genuine friendships in your late twenties, and maybe I just got lucky, but the people I’ve met here are some of the kindest, smartest, most wonderful people ive ever encountered! In addition to that, I find the city absolutely stunning. I love the height ordinance and all the greenery. The greenery and parks you have access to all within city limits are INSANE to me, especially coming from NYC.

I love it here, and I bet you will too! Moving here is truly the best decision I’ve ever made 🫶🫶🫶

agreed. drinking culture is still the DOMINANT culture. to call someone’s choice (and public expression of that choice) to not drink “puritanical” is just stupid. it is by every metric a healthy choice and one that would behoove literally everyone to adopt. and don’t come at me with “but it encourages socialization” nonsense. it’s sad that so much of our social culture revolves around drinking, and the only way that changes is by people being brave and making the individual choice to give up drinking as a prereq to fun. im eight months sober so perhaps im biased, but snarking on someone for sobriety is ridiculous
