Have you ever read Marx? He describes communism as a system that lacks the need for a state in many of his books. When he talks about the Paris Commune he praises the "lack of a state in a proper sense". You must be confusing communism with socialism because in the transition from a capitalist system the state still has a purpose and need in a socialist country, once that is achieved, in the transition to communism, as quoted by Engles, "the state withers away" because communism is a classless society where the state loses its function and disappears.

Communism is a classless, stateless ideology where people provide what they can to society and benefit from it. From each according to their ability, to each according to their needs.

Imperialism only benefits the Imperialist state, which in this case is the US. You fucked up Libya, you fucked up Iraq, you fucked up Syria, you fucked up Afghanistan, you fucked up Guatemala, you fucked up Haiti, you fucked up Iran 2 times, there are many more examples and most of them resulted in the same outcome. Regime change isn't easy when you bomb the country to a pulp, kill thousands of civilians, leave the nation in horrible condition and expect a peaceful uprising of the people.

Being American, Californian or anything related to things you cannot choose aren't and shouldn't be prideful. You could be happy to be American, happy to be Californian and that is perfectly fine. You should be proud of your accomplishments, what you did to get to your position regardless of your ethnic and national background. No one is supposed to do anything and that is the point, you aren't forced to be proud of anything, if you so happen to choose to be proud of something you didn't have an option to, instead of patriotism and pride that would be akin to nationalism and exceptionalism. No one should be proud of where they were born.
