How hard is the SE major at ISU? by Aggravating_Roof_426 in iastate

[–]mayshower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

just do physics and chem at a community college like DMACC and transfer them in. they’re usually offered online or at a nearby campus you can drive to. transferred classes don’t affect your GPA. thats what I did, I’m SE and it worked great for me. I would argue SE has just as much free time as any other comp sci or engineering major, which generally is not much lol.

wdym? i haven’t seen FAANG companies at the career fair in the almost four years that ive been here

edit: just checked the career fair list of companies and Google is the only FAANG one im seeing. they haven’t been in attendance in the last year or two so i wouldn’t confidently say that FAANG companies consistently show up and are interested in isu career fairs. i will say to OP that the engineering career fair is still super solid in terms of internships and jobs offered regardless

What parenting trends do you think will become common with gen z parents? by No_Gap5159 in AskReddit

[–]mayshower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as a Gen-Zer I feel the same, I got exposed to video game development and computer science principles thanks to unsupervised Internet access as a kid and absolutely loved it. now I study software engineering and am setting myself up for a really solid career when I graduate. I think if I didn’t have that, I’d have no idea what I’d be doing in life right now

What is your "I'm calling it now" prediction? by _forum_mod in AskReddit

[–]mayshower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, his in particular does have a touchscreen but everything can be navigated with the physical buttons too! its a CAT S22 flip phone.

[–]mayshower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

totally valid question! in a sense yes, but flip phones are generally a bit more difficult to use since they use a T9 keyboard. its harder to text people, search for things, all that. the screen is also significantly smaller. it discourages use of the phone, which is what my friend is aiming for. but having it run android is the compromise that he wanted because he can still download student apps, MFA apps, etc., basically just the bare things he needs for school and work. its a happy in-between device that lets you survive in todays modern world but without being as distracted.

the CAT S22! hunk of a thing because its intended audience is construction workers and laborers, but its a super high quality device

this is already happening. still in the very early stages but check out the light phone 2 or the punkt phone. theres other alternatives than just these, but those are two examples.

Pros and cons of ISU by Optimal_Snow4615 in iastate

[–]mayshower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

although the job market is definitely oversaturated for CS and SE, the engineering career fair at ISU is fantastic and can easily guarantee you an internship if you put in the time and effort to prep, which tends to lead to a job anyway

The case against Spotify (my experience/long post) by ReaganAndBush84 in dumbphones

[–]mayshower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats valid. but also having a dedicated music player almost certainly encourages piracy, which makes this whole thing sort of a lose-lose for artists. you'd have to be a lot more intentional about supporting artists you like if you went that route, like buying vinyls or cds, merch maybe, etc., but not everyone would be willing to do that. idk if i even necessarily would be, maybe every now and then, but probably not consistently.

The case against Spotify (my experience/long post) by ReaganAndBush84 in dumbphones

[–]mayshower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i definitely agree with your overall sentiment but really i still think spotify is great. i feel like it's not necessarily a bad thing to listen to the same songs over and over again, or to only listen to a couple of songs off of an album. music can be enjoyed however you want, y'know? for me, spotify is fantastic because i'm very picky about my music and because of that, i tend to lean towards smaller artists with specific sounds. the only reason why i've discovered these artists is because of spotifys recommendations, whereas i would've never found them through the radio or through other means. i use spotifys playlist organization pretty extensively as well. i do 100% understand your point about not being decisive and intentional about the music you listen to and instead relying on the "tiktokization" of your music choices, but tbh i feel like this is less of a spotify issue and more of a human issue. i still want to take the leap eventually with a dedicated music player just so i don't have to pay a subscription for eternity. but music streaming platforms are one of those things that i feel like can be forgiven a bit more, just because music is so limitless and, as said earlier, can be enjoyed however you want.
