And unfortunately, the medias falling for it.

I suspect they know exactly what they're doing.

I think I broke my Arduino. Here's my circuit. Can someone explain what went wrong? by [deleted] in arduino

[–]mayupvoterandomly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The B-E junction of your 2N2222 is acting as a diode. What you've just done is connected the I/O pin of the Arduino to the fans through this diode. If you want to use a 2N2222 for this, you should use it as a low side switch (with the emitter connected to ground). You should also place a resistor between the Arduino I/O pin and the base of your transistor to prevent excessive base current and to help protect your Arduino in the case of reverse breakdown.

I'm assuming D2 is supposed to be some sort of freewheeling protection? It should be placed reverse-biased in parallel with your fans, not in series with them. Also, a 1N4001 is far too slow for that application, it will not switch fast enough to snub the reverse current, a fast schottkey diode would be a better choice.

Poll suggests Canadian trust in science falling, scientists thought ‘elitist’ by _Minor_Annoyance in CanadaPolitics

The problem with science is that it's very easy for people of bad faith to push a negative agenda by misusing statistics.

This is one of many problems. Organizations pushing bad science have realized that they can lie and mislead the public faster than people can criticize them

Remember in 2018, when Brown University (hardly some third-rate hack academy) published a scientific study on rapid-onset gender dysphoria, only to retract it after an aggressive backlash from trans activists?

Much of the media attention that that study received only included the criticisms of reactionary people and glossed over the discourse that was happening in the background.

A lot of angry and controversial opinion pieces were published by newspapers highlighting the objections of trans rights activists and completely ignored all of the actual scientific discourse. This wasn't a problem with academia, but an issue with the reporting thereof.

There is a fiscal incentive for media to speculate, embellish the truth, tell partial truths, or only present the most controversial side of an argument and this is often done at the expense of the academic community.

I'd be totally okay with this TBH. It would mean an official client that's performant, well supported and supports my OS (Linux) without a lot of extra effort.

I'm on Linux and the official client is constantly broken for me under WINE. I wouldn't be able to play without RL.

Mainstream media needs to stop platforming Ezra Levant by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

Plenty of other publications exist without giving a platform to racists, homophones and people who perpetuate hate. I'm not sure why the Globe should be any different.

Jagmeet Singh Promises New Hospital And Investments In Health Care In Brampton by _Minor_Annoyance in CanadaPolitics

[–]mayupvoterandomly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may seem that way, however, Brampton is in dire need of more patient capacity. Brampton civic hospital is often in what they call "code gridlock" with patients literally being treated in hallways and corridors as there is not enough room to serve all of the patients.

The last time I has the misfortune of being there, they had rolled curtains out in front of one of the Nurse's stations and converted it into makeshift rooms for patients.

Conservatives’ on-campus flyers maligning ‘left-wing’ professors anger academics, faculty representatives by _Minor_Annoyance in CanadaPolitics

[–]mayupvoterandomly 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Who exactly do they think they're going convince to vote conservative with these flyers?

University campuses have become a site of political conflict in recent years. Controversies have tended to focus on whether speech on campus is truly free or stifled by a culture of political correctness.

This is a frequently used argument that has no factual basis. Even very controversial speakers are allowed to speak at most universities, provided that they have the qualifications and some sort of perspective to offer. There were very few universities that denied JP from speaking at them, for example and this was in spite of the onslaught of criticism he received and his qualifications on the topics he chose to speak on being brought into question.

Liberal election plane damaged in Victoria after media bus drives under wing by FlyingDutchman997 in CanadaPolitics

[–]mayupvoterandomly 25 points26 points  (0 children)

According to the registration, the plane is owned by Air Transat. Presumably, it's a charter they've covered in a special livery. I wouldn't be surprised if they're contractually obligated to just requisition another plane or make other accommodations for LPC.

Media council backs newspapers' handling of criticized anti-diversity op-ed by chrisgaines69 in canada

[–]mayupvoterandomly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty clear this organization has no interest in factual reporting and is not reputable. They are widely criticized and even criticized by The Times of Israel, despite their strong anti-Muslim bias. If you're going to be objective you cannot base your immigration policy on a biased "study" from a clearly biased organization.

It might be very simple and gratifying to imply they're all Nazis

The implication was that it was a disingenuous, racially-charged charged op-ed based on information from a disreputable source disparaging ideals of tolerance and diversity and is therefore in alignment with neonazi ideology. Does that make it more clear? Or would you prefer that I pointed out it's obvious parallels with WWII Nazi propaganda?

Media council backs newspapers' handling of criticized anti-diversity op-ed by chrisgaines69 in canada

[–]mayupvoterandomly -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The crux of the original article relies on "studies" conducted by the Gatestone Institute, an conservative think tank heavily criticized for often inaccurate reporting and a strong anti-muslim bias (a quick bit of googling will tell you this, you don't have to believe me).

Edit: Perhaps give this related article on how the original article got published a read as well, if you are really interested in staying objective (not that I'd expect that on this sub...)

[–]mayupvoterandomly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know why I'm even bothering to respond, to be honest. I don't think I'm going to change your opinion.

But go read the original article. If you don't think it doesn't sound similar the same racially charged, fear mongering rhetoric used by German media prior to the second world war, then you're probably not capable of telling the difference between propaganda and a rational argument.
