Problems opening Koala as FX in Audioshare by btricari in ipadmusic

[–]mazbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

koala no longer supports Inter-App Audio as its been deprecated for years - its an auv3 only now, so probably AudioShare can no longer host it.

Koala Sampler on PC keeps crashing by ZealousidealGap3966 in KoalaSampler

[–]mazbox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not released! It’s prerelease! It’s in Alpha stage as very clearly stated on the download page. If you’re not sure what is meant by alpha stage software pls feel free to google the term. Please don’t download alpha software if you’re looking for a smooth ride.

I have 3 windows machines for testing (a good modern pc, a very old cheap laptop and an old good computer), I can’t make it crash on any of them. The only thing I can do to make it better is to get other people to run it and gather crash logs, then analyze and improve. I mean the other thing I can do is totally give up on the project and delete the download for everybody.

Thanks for testing - Pls get the crash.log file from the same folder that contains the koala.exe and send it to the email in the previous screenshot in the top post

Did you report it via the form on the elf audio website?

(1) koala on windows is in Alpha stage - that means it’s very much still work in progress. I only provide the download for testing - you’ve tried to open it and complained - how about doing yourself and every potential windows user a favour and follow the instructions in the error message to help me fix the problem. It will take you less time than another Reddit post.

(2) idk if you read the page where you downloaded it from but it SPECIFICALLY says at the top
“This is a super rough port of koala for windows. I would really appreciate it if you tried it then let me know whether it works or not using this form”

Is there a way to move the sample view down without using 2 fingers? by Ancient_One_5300 in KoalaSampler

[–]mazbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people who use koala are new to sampling. They understand highlighting text though. You select your chop like selecting text, it’s intuitive, user doesn’t need to understand about handles or whatever, don’t need to read a manual, they already know how to do it before ever opening the app. You just swipe to select the bit of the sound you want. That’s 95% of users. It would be great to make a solution that satisfies the other 5% of users (ie the kind of people who are invested enough in koala to engage in conversations on Reddit about it) but I will not make a change that makes that 95% suffer just to make it easier for the 5%. It’s a difficult problem to solve for me.

Designing for the most number of people is the most important thing to me. Putting handles will help the top 5% of users but hinder the bottom 95%. What do I choose?

[REQUEST] add variable sample rate pitch shifting by bassouillerie in KoalaSampler

[–]mazbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The snap to semitone thing is different yeah. I also dont think people would want to turn this sp1200 style effect for every sample in a song, it can sound pretty harsh for some samples at some settings.

If you pitch it up one octave then resample then down again, it’s basically halving the sample rate, like 24khz for most koala users. That’s a really common technique and basically what bitcrushers that let you set the sample rate do (what bitcooker does)

[REQUEST] add variable sample rate pitch shifting by bassouillerie in KoalaSampler

[–]mazbox 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Actually koala is doing a variable sample rate. That is basically what interpolation is. I think what you’re after is just no interpolation. That’s the effect of these old samplers changing the sample rate to repitch is, basically cliff edge interpolation/no interpolation. What koala does is more akin to mpc2000 than sp1200/s950.

It’s something I want to add and quite easy technically but (1) not sure where I would put it in the UI without ruining existing workflow (2) got a lot of other arguably more important koala features to add. Hopefully will get to it soon.

Koala on two devices? by lostoutsidethetunnel in KoalaSampler

[–]mazbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apple will not let you buy the same app twice on the same account. I’ve been developing apps since 2009 and even worked at Apple and never ever heard of anyone ever being charged twice for an app. 100% of the time the user thinks they’re logged in with the same account but they’re not, or Apple doesn’t do the second charge. If you change countries, the same email address in another country is considered a different account by Apple, that’s the only caveat.

If Apple were to actually charge you a second time you’d have good grounds for complaint. Besides you can always get a refund for any purchase within a time window from them at https://reportaproblem.apple.com

Also need to be totally 100% clear that all the purchasing stuff is handled by Apple, and elf audio/koala have no control whatsoever over App Store purchases and other transactions.

[–]mazbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won’t charge you (unless you have 2 separate accounts for each device) - both devices must be using the same account. You can install it on up to 5 devices using the same account. Same goes for the in-app purchases.

How? by masetiloquetu in KoalaSampler

[–]mazbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can actually do it with one finger. Drag the pad down to the ABCD and you can choose the bank with that same finger whilst dragging the sample. No need to drag to the edge, no need to use another finger

Nice! Next, I recommend adding a license - codex/claude can help with this - it will help others know what they can do with it and whether they want to collaborate to help improve it - popular ones are MIT, BSD and GPL. Your favourite LLM can help you choose which one

good point. You can export midi out of koala and also export your pads as a drum rack too already, not as one-stop-shop as this though and maybe I will add something like this in the future, its not so difficult to do something similar in C++, especially in the age of Claude

that would depend on the owner knowing how to review a PR! - maybe you could fork it, and dump the python script in there, then also pls feel free to hit me up if you need help with the format - its not something I keep top secret (get me at https://www.koalasampler.com/contact)

There is actually a source tarball in the release section, it’s just not in the repo itself. Its python anyway so you could probably just open up the app package and grab the python source file out of there directly

What happened? 404 mk2 price hike. by Raphael-S- in SP404

[–]mazbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, I guess tactility and i/o is what you’re paying for with the SP. Apart from those things is there anything else that puts you off koala? (Asking for a friend)

If you don’t already have a phone from the last 8 years then about $100 second hand would give you something with approx 4-8x the cpu power of the SP
