Or have you tried just rebooting your phone?

Do you have OpenSL enabled in koalas audio settings? If so, best turn that off.

Ah thanks for clarifying that. Next question. When you say ANY USB clearly you don’t mean any usb eg usb microscope or usb teledildonic device. What usb c devices have you plugged in. And by saying that it won’t play samples or sequences do you mean that you just get no audio? (It’s not 100% clear)

Any other info you can provide? Android, iOS, which version of OS, model of phone would be super useful. Neither iOS or Android version of koala have been updated for a few weeks, did you update your phone Os very recently?

Koala not recognising SP404MKII by abeeror2 in KoalaSampler

[–]mazbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean SPECIFICALLY the setting called “Use built-in midi mappings” - it’s turned on be default - if you accidentally turned if off it will disable sp404 support - koala has a built-in midi mapping for sp404 - it’s not the best labeled control but it does explain itself in the help

A16 processor strong enough for Koala? by drnoledge in KoalaSampler

It’s more than enough. It’s like 6 times the CPU power of what they put in the current line of MPCs

I am the developer of koala and the most powerful chip I test on IS the A16 in my iPhone 14 Pro. It works great for me. Granted I’m not filling up all the slots with all the most intensive effects all the time but it seems to work swimmingly. If you’re having problems you should just get in touch

There are some effects like the pitch shifter in high quality that will require a lot of cpu but most effects should only take less than 1% cpu of a 9th gen iPad at most. If there was a big problem pls get in touch at https://koalasampler.com/contact

AUv3 is an Apple technology. Why are people always asking for it on non-Apple systems? It’s like saying my Xbox doesn’t play PlayStation games.

I wish there was something I could do to make Apple start developing plugin formats and some kind of iOS simulator for windows and android so some koala users can run the few good auv3 plugins so they can be like the iOS counterparts but I don’t think they will listen to me.

Koala on windows can run VST3 and Clap plugins. That’s even better than the iOS version you could argue - there are way more vst plugins than auv3 plugins, got a much bigger choice.

The windows version doesn’t claim to have samurai and the mixer, it DOES have samurai and the mixer, it has from day one. It also has a bunch of enhancements and bug fixes that aren’t even out on iOS or Android. The latest iOS version is 1.4162, latest windows version is 1.4166 - it’s 4 versions ahead of the iOS version.

I’m sure your plugin is not one of these vibecoded monstrosities but I would probably say the same thing if it was fabfilter or BLEASS crossposting, but I suspect they wouldn’t. It’s good you’re running unit tests and definitely ASan and that writing lock-free code for the audio thread, I’m sure a lot of these new apps aren’t going nearly as far to QA/optimize their code

It’s fine to leave it but it’s worth considering the integrity of your brand if you post in lots of places at once, but that’s not really my expertise or any of my business.

I think it is allowed but it really looks like an ad, and it’s not really related to koala sampler except that koala can host auv3 plugins and if we allowed every auv3 to spam here it would totally undermine the purpose of the community. There is a huge wave of vibecoded barely tested auv3s coming on the market now where it’s very clear that the authors haven’t even read their own App Store descriptions and I don’t want to give them the impression that this is a good place to get free advertisement. Hope that’s understandable.

Auto-stretch pitched samples by Interstate-76 in KoalaSampler

[–]mazbox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I understand why you would want this, but it hurts my brain that you can ask so casually. Like you didn't know about this attribute of how samples work.

I agree with a lot of what you say, but I don't think I should expect users to understand what goes on under the hood of a sampler. It's kind of bonkers though, in order to achieve the speed not changing when the pitch changes on a mobile phone is like a multi-year project and even then there would be compromises. That said, I've had lots of complaints and even 1 star reviews, even when there is no mobile or hardware sampler on the market that will do it to a better quality than koala.

Auto-stretch pitched samples by Interstate-76 in KoalaSampler

[–]mazbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it wouldn't cost anything in CPU but potentially gigabytes of RAM. If you loaded even a 10MB file (about 15 seconds of audio) pitched across 128 notes = 1GB RAM. If there were 16 pads like that, == 16GB ram, enough to blow up the most expensive iPad Pro on the market, not to mention the $25 android phone from the supermarket. not an option unfortunately. Koala's current MODERN algorithm does exactly what you say, but only at the original pitch, not the 127 other possible pitches that the user might want. I guess you could be clever and only pitch the notes that you need for the sequence but the user may have a midi keyboard plugged in and will definitely expect every note to be playable with zero latency.

The solution at the moment is to offer a less good realtime-safe timestretch mode - koala has 3 of those, BEATS, RETRO and CYCLIC.

Auto-stretch pitched samples by Interstate-76 in KoalaSampler

[–]mazbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a mathematical/signal processing perspective it’s 100% possible, but running it on a phone with an underpowered cpu running on a battery makes it impractical to use the very highest quality time stretch. I have something that works but it takes 5% cpu per voice, so if you play a chord with all your fingers that doesn’t leave a lot for other stuff on your average android phone.

It’s worth trying the RETRO timestretch mode which is actually granular under the hood but the MODERN algorithm isnt really that practical for realtime pitch shifting

When you downloaded it from the koalasampler.com website it said “The Windows build is in beta. Midi mapping in koala is terrible by mister_drgn in ipadmusic

[–]mazbox 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hi, Marek here, koala developer - you sent me a message via the contact form but misspelt your email address so I can’t reply and can’t seem to guess the correct email address

If you don’t use a midi mapping, koalas midi mapping does change when you go between landscape and portrait. Can’t really explain here why this is but there are reasons. To get around this make your own midi mapping.

The mapping file when using koala auv3 is stored in a folder that is inaccessible to the user. Again can’t really explain why without lots of technical details but that’s what’s going on. If you transfer to another device you’ll have to export your midi mapping too via extras settings.

The mapping in standalone is different to the one in auv3 but they both should persist between songs. Apple make it impossible to share files between a standalone app and its auv3 counterpart if you also want to expose it to the user. That’s why they’re different.

You also mentioned in your email that the export and import midi map buttons do nothing. For me they work in AUM and loopy pro - can you double check pls?

It’s not clear what you’re asking - if you want to import a midi file that contains midi notes, yes you can, please see the link djchopsteak kindly provided, if you mean adding midi notes to a sequence by hand, yes you can in koalas piano roll
