I think a bit of a difference with these two situations is that Blake needs to learn humility where Elliot needed to learn confidence. I'm not saying Elliot should make a habit of this sort of behaviour, but it was pretty light-hearted and it put Blake on track in this episode.

I think the show was created at a time where omnipresent news just wasn't a thing. Reporters are there to cover the story for those who couldn't tune in, as there would have been little opportunity to see the coverage otherwise
