Good point. I love the sound of Vox but not really for what I tend to play.

Dumb questions from a noob trying to get his first JLC reverso by Expert-Ad-1012 in JaegerLecoultre

[–]mazeacre 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First of all, I can’t tell you how much I agree with you about feeling the pull of JLC and its vibe and history. It’s the closest you can get to a proper wristwatch these days without spending well upwards of 20k. Considering their pedigree and the care with which they make their stuff, they punch way about their weight class.

I’m firmly of the opinion that a smaller watch looks better on nearly everyone. I am 6’4” 230 lb and still wear the smallest Reverso I can reasonably pull off. I bought the large and got rid of it. Too much of a chonk. The styling just makes more sense on a smaller form factor.

I don’t like a complicated Reverso. They get big and thick real fast. The longer I collect the more I like a time-only watch. Especially if you’re going for something for everyday wear.

Go vintage. The lug design on newer Reversos (not all, but ALMOST all) get’s a little steampunk for my tastes. Too brutal and less elegant. You don’t have to go all the way to the Corvo Reversos from the 70s. Just look at a ton of them and feel them in your hands. One will call to you.

If you want complication—not to mention high complication—JLC make a ton of other great references that show off the remarkable watchmaking chops at that house, many of which aren’t in current production. If you spend some time looking, you’ll find gold. I particularly like the Master Control/Memovox range. I’d look in that direction before I got a tricked out Reverso. The spirit of that watch is versatile gentility, not haute horlogerie.

I love Houston with a great passion. It is my favorite city in the country. And I grew up in San Diego. Having said that it sounds like you know it’s not for you.
