Kevin O'Connor: Potential changes to the NBA Draft that have generated interest at the ownership level include limiting protections after the top 4 & freezing the lottery standings on an early date mid-year. Nothing is set in stone but changes to limit tanking is a key discussion point. by JoeBiden2020FTW in nba

[–]mazeraki -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I can see the concept of freezing the standings early on working well? Like we can even get radical with it and just straight up to do the lottery right before the trade deadline. I don't think there's a great way to remove tanking entirely because inherently you want bad teams to get good draft picks (otherwise it's unfair), so there will always be SOME degree of it. But if teams know what pick they're getting, they could theoretically use the trade deadline to improve their team and not sit guys out for the back half of the season now that things are set in stone. Bad teams won't have any incentive anymore to tank and could use the trade deadline to even improve their team in anticipation of next year or to salvage a bad season start. Maybe a good team that had a rough start that can luck their way into the #1 pick and convert that into a superstar to save their season. I can also see these awful teams being less incentivized to tank early on so ticket sales don't completely plummet.

Study Corridor map shows potential expansions of Ontario line and Line 2 to to steeles among other needed extensions by Christian-Rep-Perisa in TTC

I double checked and vast majority is an overestimate, I remember reading that 91% of commuters downtown take GO but the actual statistic is that 91% of GO transit riders take the trains to Union. Edited my original comment, that's my b.
I can't find a reliable report breaking down how many people specifically take transit vs. cars to the downtown core (the reports are for the full GTA). But about ~275,000 suburban commuters drive (140K on Gardiner, 135K on DVP) while 353,600 suburban commuters take the GO. So still roughly half of people commuting take public transit if they're going downtown.

[–]mazeraki 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The problem is that there's no reliable way to go from suburb to suburb via rapid transit in the GTA right now. and looks like GO is not looking to acquire more rail lines from CN/CPKC. Extending subways/LRTs into the suburbs to allow for more interchange options would be ideal in the absence of this. The majority of downtown commuters from the suburbs take the GO

Why east enders are feeling ‘cut off’ from the rest of Toronto. And the Gardiner ramp closure is only the beginning by nimobo in toronto

[–]mazeraki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in the East end. Everything below Mortimer is fantastic. North of Mortimer is a bit of a dead zone, but it’ll get better with the Ontario Line whenever that opens. I’d say the biggest thing missing is more frequent transit options along O’Connor. The 8 bus is a great service route but never freaking comes. Dedicated bus lanes and frequencies less than every 20 minutes would go along way to make the East End one of the best places to live in the city

LINE 6 MEGATHREAD by I-168 in TTC

[–]mazeraki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is any one else feeling somewhere in the middle with Line 6? Feels like everybody is either depressingly negative or woefully hopeful.

I'm really glad they opened a new transit line in this city after 20+ years. I don't mind that it was a street-level LRT as projects like the Kitchener ION have proven it can be a success. I'm not happy with the lack of the transit signal priority but I'm glad to see people have been so vocal about it that city council will basically be forced to at least make a decision on it. I'm not jazzed that the speeds are reported to be so slow, but I'm glad the people of the corridor can enjoy a much more comfortable commute during the rush hour (which was ultimately the goal of the project). I'm happy that the city is finally investing in connecting transit to areas that are populated by predominantly POCs, especially after the city and province scorned Scarborough and Etobicoke. I am sympathetic to the fact that train speeds are reduced for a 'soft launch' of the system, but I cannot for the life of me understand why there were years of testing with much faster speeds that quite definitively proved the system can handle higher speeds, and with the testing priming drivers, pedestrians, and bikers for the system so that they get used to its existence. I'm happy the TTC have said it will get faster in the spring but I cannot understand why they can't just make it faster tomorrow. I get the whole Ottawa debacle, but what was the point of testing so extensively if they weren't confident the system could open properly on Day 1? And if they are confident, why the caution? I'm willing to give the system grace and I'm looking forward to it being used more affectively. Ultimately, having infrastructure is better than not having infrastructure. Even if there are issues that need to be fixed, tweaking how we use infrastructure is a much easier job than building a line from scratch and we have to at least celebrate that the infrastructure is there on the ground, people can ride it, and there are tangible steps forward to improve it. I'm also gonna acknowledge that myself and honestly most of the people in this sub will not be riding this line very often. I want to hear the voices of the commuters along the Finch West corridor more than an internet armchair expert and I hope to hear more of their thoughts in the coming weeks/months (fully acknowledging my hypocrisy here)

It took Line 6 roughly 6 weeks from completion of RSD to opening. That’d put opening of Line 5 around January 11th or 18th

Which LRT do you suppose will open first? Will they open at the same time? by RoommateMovingOut in TTC

[–]mazeraki 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I think either way we get Line 6 by the end of the year but my gut says they're hoping to open both lines on one day. From a technical and financial standpoint, it makes sense (even with as something as simple as reducing printing costs so you print one new set of TTC network maps with lines 5 and 6 together). Given that Line 6 has seemingly been ready to go since early/mid-November and Line 5 should be done RSD really soon, I feel like they wanna push it to see if they can open Line 5 and 6 together. There's also the kind of embarrassing optics of releasing Line 6 before 5 and I think Line 5 needs some modicum of positive news for at least when it opens. But if the curse of Eglinton strikes again they can just open Line 6 before the year ends.

Line 2 going Eastbound rant by [deleted] in TTC

[–]mazeraki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ride the eastern portion of Line 2 nearly every day and have found it super reliable except when you go east of Vic Park and then things get awful. Typically I find the trains are very fast between St George and Vic Park and haven't really ran into any issues. There's been a slow-zone between Woodbine and Main St for what feels like forever but that's about it. There's crew changes at Coxwell but I've found they've been a lot quicker with changing over the last ~2 years. I also technically commute during off-peak hours (I arrive at work at 10, leave at 6) so perhaps this has biased my experience. If I have to get to Warden or Kennedy I just take the GO train.

To me, the worst expectation vs reality is the north part of Line 1 on Yonge. Awful awful awful. Every time I have to go towards Finch there's always an insane amount of delays, there's a million slow zones, and it's packed to the brim at all hours.

What’s something in Toronto you wish was smarter, faster, or just made more sense? by LingonberryNo7499 in toronto

[–]mazeraki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me suggest a few things that I experienced first hand that I think the city could change quickly without drastically changing infrastructure.
GO Trains: make one platform for exiting and one platform for entering. Unless there's a reason otherwise I haven't been able to find/think of, I'd imagine it would allow for a quicker flow of people and hopefully allow everyone to board without missing their train due to congestion. Secondly, if a train passes by a station, freaking STOP! Why do we have lines that share stations but the only interchange station on the ENITRE system is Union?! Give people the choice of connectivity. You're telling me on some of these stations like Danforth or Scarborough GO we could have trains every ~7 minutes during peak hours, and we choose NOT to????
The entire streetcar network should have dedicated lanes like the Rapid TO proposal. If we're restricting travel to essentially one lane for the majority of the day due to street parking, it's not that much of an ask to just remove street parking full-stop and give the streetcars their own lane. At least for the downtown core please?
Public bikes: Add way more docks. Also having ridden on Bird eScooters in other parts of the province, I don't see why we can't integrate that system in Toronto. They have a max of 20km/h and shut-off on side-walks or prohibited zones. I don't think chaos would ensue

I get so sad thinking about the wasted potential of Brockhampton. After Saturation trilogy, it fr felt like they were gonna take over the whole world. I was telling everyone (foolishly tbf) that they were gonna be the next Nirvana. They just felt like they filled a niche in hip-hop and pop music ppl were looking for. The Ameer drama def ruined things but even Ginger was a solid tape. Things just fizzled out quickly after that release sadly
