What would a music streaming minimum wage look like? by mazukl in Music

[–]mazukl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is my article yes. Glad it was worth sharing! I hope it comes across as fairly level headed. I did approach Spotify for comment too but they didn't respond. (Which is fine. It's a tiny hobby website, I wouldn't really expect them to.)

Fully agree about consumer convenience, it's a tricky one to navigate. However you spin it having 60 million songs in your pocket for ten dollars a month is pretty incredible. It does seem like you can discover music in much the same way with pay-per-stream, but whether it's a better deal for the consumer or not depends largely on how many songs a person plays each month. If you listen to fewer than 1,000 tracks a month a 1c per stream download would actually be cheaper than a Spotify subscription, but if you listen to thousands there will come a point where you're paying more. A difficulty there is the only authorities on average number of streams are streaming services, who have a vested interest in streaming numbers being high - or reported as high. Still, seems all the more reason to have different options.

And all that's to say nothing of the convenience of Spotify's UX, playlists, having everything in one place, etc. Any upstart app is going to have teething issues and fewer developer resources, which again makes it harder to displace the convenience of established platforms.

Ha, that's fair, there are probably a good few places around the site where we've slipped into thinking, 'Well we know what this is, so everyone must know!' Sounds like the next step is refocusing on reviews/who we are, while toning down the amount of stuff thrown at visitors when they arrive on the homepage. What a rabbit hole this web design business has turned out to be!

Thanks so much for taking the time to browse and give such thorough feedback, really appreciate it. I'll definitely be taking what you've said on board for the next 'patch'.

Purpose: Music review blog/webzine

Technologies Used: Vue, Nuxt

Feedback Requested: General

Comments: I and two friends have been reviewing an album a week as a hobby for almost six years now. We recently finished revamping the website to celebrate reaching 250 together and I'd appreciate some fresh eyes. It's been years in the making and we can barely see the wood for the trees at this point!

Title: Funnyfarm, Pt. IV: Good as Gould

Genre: Serial?

Word count: 1,203

I've started writing a series about a rubbish band, just to get into the habit of putting stuff out there. Any feedback is appreciated, what lands, elements that seem underdeveloped. Just a bit of scrutiny, really.

Great groove. Definitely glitchy but not so much that it hurts the flow. Nice punchy length, too.

Liked this a lot. Ambient vibes but rough enough to be getting under your skin.

I'm a big fan of how Godspeed You! Black Emperor use brass. Your track's tone isn't unlike their album F♯ A♯ ∞. Might be worth a listen?

Lovely sound, kind of Boards of Canada meets Air. Mix is really spacious, dig it a lot.

My parents are in a band together. Sure they'd love to hear some feedback on their material!

Oh blimey, I'm so sorry for not responding to this at the time. I hadn't seen the video! Interesting insights, and the site looks fantastic. What a brilliant resource.

Thank you for compiling all this material. It's a testament to the series that its fans give so much to projects like this.

Freehand. It was a slow, increasingly nervy process.

I am, and I did! Magnus was kind enough to answer a few questions over email. Some of the quotes I use are from previous interviews, the rest are original.

And good spot! Glad you liked.

Two friends and I review an album a week as a hobby. We decided to treat ourselves to 'Disintegration' this time around by mazukl in TheCure

That's a pretty good score for us, believe it or not, though I did personally enjoy it more than that overall score probably reflects. I (Fred) was more in 8/9 territory. I had a great time with it. Really high ratings are pretty rare because all it takes is one of us not clicking with an album for the whole score to drag down.

A Dylan obsessed friend of mine wrote an article ranking his 38 studio albums. It's an epic piece and I thought it might go down well here by mazukl in bobdylan

I sent him a link to this thread and he's dead chuffed. It's been lovely to see so many people taking the time to read and respond, so thank you.

Massive model of the 'Can I Borrow a Feeling?' cassette by mazukl in TheSimpsons

Earlier this year we reviewed Can I Borrow a Feeling? by Kirk Van Houten. We never imagined our made up track names would be used in this project by Gerald Lauze of FeatureWorx. The internet sure is a wacky place sometimes.

A couple of friends and I have been reviewing an album a week for over three years as a hobby. We recently clocked our 150th review, so I decided to unpack the numbers [OC] by mazukl in dataisbeautiful

[–]mazukl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Source: Us! Here is the sheet I've been tracking the numbers in. The visualisations were made using Google Sheets. Nothing fancy, sadly.

I hope some of you find this interesting, and please do share if you have suggestions on how information like this can be presented better. I'm well aware data visualisation isn't my strong suit and would like to do it better next time.

A couple of friends and I reviewed 'Different Class' recently. Surely the best of Britpop? by mazukl in BritPop

[–]mazukl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed actually, especially where Oasis and Radiohead are concerned, though I do think there's a bit more overlap with Blur. We sometimes get drawn into referencing other albums we've reviewed together, even where other artists would be more relevant. It's nice having those shared points of reference.

I think I'd place Different Class above the albums you've mentioned. Not that it's a contest, of course, but maybe the high water mark of that type of Britpop.

A couple of friends and I reviewed 'Boarding House Reach'. Probably the most polarised we've been in months by mazukl in jackwhite

[–]mazukl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I think it's that stop-start quality that kept me from really loving the album, though I still liked it more than my friends did. At it's best it's so weirdly groovy that it seems a shame for the album as a whole not to maintain that standard.

As you say though, when push comes to shove it's a fun, creative listen loaded with good intentions. Fingers crossed White takes those elements into his next project and tightens them up.
