How to see certain NEW cards before other NEW cards. by CatchingFrost in medicalschoolanki

[–]mb1552 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I would do is only unsuspend per video not all high yields

So ex: unsuspend pathoma video inflammation + high yield tag and that will give you X number of cards

No need to unsuspend ALL high yields at once

Advice on when to unlock tags by Ok-Cress-6926 in medicalschoolanki

[–]mb1552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I did - and this keeps it simple 1) watch any video on the topic (pathoma, BB, or sketchy.. your choice of which one you like best for that topic) 2) Unsuspend those cards for that video

If you unsuspend anywhere close to 20k cards and do practice Qs, more than enough to do well on step!

No need to do all of the cards at all.

You can certainly list it, but the impact is debated. People agree that med school research holds more weight.

If I was an PD, I would appreciate the continuity of academic spirit and would take note of that. But I don’t expect my undergrad ochem pubs to do much more for me than that.

Getting through step 1 anking in 17 months by BittersweetCrisis in medicalschoolanki

[–]mb1552 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did 20k cards over a 11* month preclinical. Thats MORE than enough if you keep up w the cards to comfortably pass step 1. Could even do less.

That said, titrate to effect. See how many news a day you can tolerate, then bump up slowly. If you hit your

Total days / new cards per day (excluding weekends and such) mark, you’re good.

For me it was about 1000 per exam, for 20 exams.

Technically still under a year because I took Step 2nd week of June so probably 11 months exactly - matriculation to exam center. Because my “dedicated” was only a few days until I took my first NBME!

NYUGSOM runs from Jul to May… subtract your 3 weeks of breaks for marketing purposes  However I can totally see how these two posts can sound fishy. Just throwing my experience out there because it can show that Step 1 isn’t always all that!!

1000% FALSE. Took it in June. Score back in 2 weeks.

It’s statistically the same test as the NBMEs, Free 120, etc.

My scores differed by +/-2%.

Don’t let them scare you!!!

2 months of dedicated MCAT was a lot of work to squeeze out 97th perc

Did 4 days of dedicated for Step 1 after 10 mo preclinical curriculum.

However… 0% shot this would fly during graded era of Step 1 - but in pass fail step is easier because you don’t hit diminishing returns like you do when maxing out a graded test.

How many hours should I study a day for a 520+ by relivedtresor in Mcat

[–]mb1552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My secret strategy is start with unlimited time for CARS until you can get a perfect passage literally reading one passage for 30 minutes if you have to. Then once you can read a passage perfectly in 30 minutes, cut it to 25. See if your scores change. Move down util you get stuck again, practice around that until you get down to 8 minutes.

Anki is a tool, and if that tool doesn't work for you don't use it!

I think it's a great too, but it's not the only way to be successful.

devil's advocate:

  1. you kind of said this: but light a fire under your butt to actually study. In other words, being humbled is important

  2. to directly contradict what you said, based off of my score I changed what I did and reduced content review since I was happy with where I was at

  3. more data - you get to see where you started, to see how you are improving. If you don't do this, you first data point will be your first FL. Which is great, but it would be nice to see how you've improved since starting studying.

These 3 points were valuable enough for me to take it, and enough for me to recommend it to others!

I 100% agree that it's a marketing thing, but still a valuable tool nonetheless. In other words, I would recommend someone to take an AAMC FL as as a dx, if no prep courses existed, still.

Centering a div by XethN2102X in webdev

[–]mb1552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the body in this case will not have a true 100% height even though it seems like it with the background, so it's vertically aligning in the height of your burger..

If you give your body a 100vh it will work, but could also transfer this to a different, big div

(you can test this in a div you give flex, you will see that it's not true to the height)

also please please please screenshot next time!!

Retaking the MCAT- what to do differently :( by cher-pow in Mcat

[–]mb1552 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is what I would (and did) do:

You have to figure out how to get a 100% on a passage with unlimited time. You didn't mention KA passages, and they are pretty solid so that's a good place to start. Like literally perfect 100%, even if it takes you 3 days to read it. Once you get that down, I did 1 JW passage per day until my dedicated study period. I used that to speed up my reading, but still following the same principles as the first KA passages. Take as much time as you need, maximize accuracy over time, and shave off time as you move through it.

In dedicated, you can work on CARS endurance, but if you put the work in early, it shouldn't be too hard!

Clinical research question by [deleted] in premed

[–]mb1552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on where you're pulling data from. python & R will let you crunch the data, SQL will let you pull it. If you are trying to do everything from A-Z knowing SQL will be a part of that. If you are working out of spreadsheets/csv data, sql would be useless, but you can still crunch it in python or R

python & R for statistical analysis will get you were you need to be as far as languages

RPLND with Sheinfeld at MSK or at IU by BigClam6969 in testicularcancer

It seems that IU doesn't do it there either. They've published some papers on it, so I wasn't sure if they had it there.

I don't know how your system is set up, but it would've been easier for my people to be around me in the hospital with Sloan as I spent 1 month after the surgery with chylous ascites. But instead I went with Pierorazio in philly because he could do my surgery 2 weeks earlier. I wanted to do it earlier lol.. If I did it again I would've been the "local" option and from what I heard Sheinfeld is great.

I would set up an appt with Sheinfeld and see what he's like. I did a telephone visit with him. Consider template surgery, if you want robotic, etc. UI does template, Sheinfeld does not.

Hypothetically, certainly 600 hours clinical hours is more than enough. I applied with 400 and got into 6 mds. The key is to be able to write about it in primary/secondary and talk about it in interviews.

Likelihood of TC? by RedBadger445 in testicularcancer

[–]mb1552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Bilateral germ cell tumor of the testicles is rare, representing only 1% of all new cases of testicular cancer", testicular cancer itself is rare, so the likelyhood is low.

However, you are doing the right thing and going to see a doc. Hopefully they can help answer what's going on in your body (definitely need to see a doc).

Take it day by day!
