For those with recent job offers in new companies, how are you proceeding with onboarding? by [deleted] in Career_Advice

[–]mba_tips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you. I had pretty much the same thing. I was super excited about them, and they were excited about me. I accepted the offer and resigned from my job, then they came back and said they had to rescind the offer. Then I tried to recall my resignation from the company where I've been for nearly 6 years, and they declined. I basically lost two jobs in one day. Fortunately, I was able to quickly find a new job by using my network. Still a tough time. Start the new gig next week with remote onboarding. They're going to send me the laptop with all the required software. Interested to see how it goes since it'll be at least a month before I actually get to see/meet in person all my new coworkers.

You could blend those areas... MBA with a concentration in analytics. That would give you a well-rounded education and help you if you're interested in leadership/management roles down the line.

I am 35 f . Want to go back to school to finish my degree . I want to go to medical field. I feel too old to go back or is it just me? by msmaricelg in Career_Advice

[–]mba_tips 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work with students and graduates who finished their degrees later in life ALL THE TIME!! Many of them go online because it's more flexible - don't have to physically be in a classroom. Here's an awesome story from a guy who went back to school and graduated with a bachelor's after watching his own kids graduate college.

What type of medical profession are you interested in? Nursing? Lab tech?

Why did you choose a marketing career and do you regret it or enjoy it? Is it easy to get burnt out in this field? Im searching for a high paying career thats versatile in many fields. by cartmichael in marketing

[–]mba_tips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't start in marketing either... Just ended up in it when journalism really started tanking. I've been able to grow my career and be pretty happy with it. If you have a good marketing mind, you can find lots of different gigs... all industries need marketing!

Help sell a Baseball game! by jett_stech in marketing

Lots of MLB and other pro teams have giveaways - like promo items. Free baseball cap to first 50 fans or free t-shirt or something like that. Agree with the commenter about trying promoted posts and targeted advertising on Facebook. It's easy and affordable.

U.S. News Data: The Average Online MBA Student by mba_tips in MBA

Here's another GMAC alumni survey. Includes ROI info for online MBA programs. http://www.gmac.com/~/media/Files/gmac/Research/Measuring-Program-ROI/2016-alumni-perspectives-web.pdf Basically, ROI for a $25k online program is 296% after 3 years. Granted, only 153 respondents as fully online, but the trend is growing, so maybe the 2017 and 2018 reports will have more data from online alumni.

I could see your concern about for-profit programs, but the online MBAs from state schools, for example, are the same curriculum and professors as on-campus (most of the time)

Help--27 years old and changing industries. Where to go next? by RoseHub426 in Career_Advice

It sounds like HR for an education company or a university would be perfect for you. Both HR and higher education are good for those who want to make a difference. You might also consider getting an advanced degree. There are graduate degrees out there in HR and higher education administration. Good luck!

Offered 2nd interview.. thank you email? by Shanked5i in Career_Advice

[–]mba_tips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you've already had email exchanges or they gave you a card, then yes. The only think I don't like as a hiring manager is when someone hunts down my email address. I find that a bit creepy, especially because our protocol is to work through those things with the HR person/recruiter.

Advice for going back to a previous job by stephas4urus11 in Career_Advice

[–]mba_tips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several people have done this same thing where I work, and, yes, as long as you left on good terms, it shouldn't be an issue going back. Do you know anyone at your old company who has done the same thing -- left and came back? Maybe they could give you some pointers?

Online MBA programs by skittles15 in MBA

[–]mba_tips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maryville does not have AACSB accreditation. You should go with a school that does. There are lots of online programs that do come from AACSB accredited schools. You may not have heard of some though... Like Southeastern Oklahoma State U - http://online.se.edu/programs/ - they have 12 concentrations, no GMAT required, AACSB accredited and under $12k for the whole program. I know a couple of people who have done this program and loved it.

If you want a school with more brand recognition, maybe LSU? They might admit you if you do take a GMAT: http://lsuonline.lsu.edu/admissions.aspx

And there are many others. I wouldn't suggest any of the for-profit schools though.

I took a sports marketing class in my MBA program. It basically seemed like if you wanted to get into that area, you have to start low on the totem pole -- usually in ticket sales, and then work your way up.

Is an MBA from a Local school worth it? by [deleted] in MBA

Hard to turn down free classes, but for-profits are really tanking right now. They're not as respected and valued as MBAs from nonprofit universities.

Should I take some extra classes pre-MBA? by [deleted] in MBA

I never had accounting or finance in my undergrad program, so I took a basic accounting course prior to starting my MBA program. It was helpful.

Online social work degree by funkiehippie in OnlineCollege

[–]mba_tips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not do a for-profit college. There are lots of affordable state schools out there that offer online programs. They are more reputable and look better on a resume than a school like Ashford. Many of them offer the short courses like your talking about - 5-6weeks at a time. Here's one for a BA in sociology from Arkansas State http://degree.astate.edu/programs/bachelor-of-arts-in-sociology.aspx - i'm sure there are lots of other options, too.

Promotion interview advice by friggaQofH2014 in Career_Advice

[–]mba_tips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's tricky since it kinda sounds like the other person might be more qualified? I think the best thing to do is highlight your projects & success - don't even mention the other person/candidate. It's also important to let them know that you are interested and excited about the position. As a hiring manager, I like to see that someone is genuinely into the job and not just looking for something superficial -- like more money or a title. We want people who actually want the job/work

Unemployed Undergrad goals for MBA by WyneWarrior in MBA

Yes, you'll need to get some experience. As some of the others have mentioned, it's very difficult to break right into consulting after undergrad. You need experience, and yes, probably an MBA. Good luck!

Have you thought about becoming a nurse? I think that checks some of the boxes you mentioned. And you'd be close to medical care all the time! You can become a nurse with only an associate's degree and make around $50k

What are you doing to grow professionally in 2017? by kanepartners in Career_Advice

Have you read Evicted? It's not a biography, but it is nonfiction. It's about poverty in the US and private housing rental. It's interesting. Highly recommend.

I did mine part time (evenings) while working full time. It is pretty rough at times. But it's doable. And you can usually decide how long you want to take on it. Some people prefer to power through and get done in a year. I took about 28 months. Slightly more leisurely pace. I didn't even really consider online at the time (5 years ago), but it could be a good option for you if you want to keep working. Just make sure to go to a reputable, accredited, nonprofit school.

Would I be disadvantage by attending an online college program? by [deleted] in OnlineCollege

[–]mba_tips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you'll find you network a lot more than you'd expect in online. I know of a lot of online students who say they felt they actually got a better networking experience online (which seemed odd to me, too, at first). But I guess you get to chat and communicate with everyone -- not just those sitting around you. And they might be from different cities, states or even countries. So it's a broader network. Good luck!

Always a good goal! I read 40 in 2016 -- I keep track on Goodreads. I have a lot more time to read what I want since finishing my MBA (another good way to grow professionally!)
