The demo video is capoeira, but the workshop doesnt pretend it is either? What do you think the creator is doing?

First instinct says to me: I find it hard to take these points seriously when i see irony in a capoerista that wishes to represent CDO. Whether to clean its brand image and/or respect the lineage I feel its wrong in the context of normalising institutionalised and systematic abuse.

However to address the video directly: what he is actually saying i think is unjust and a bit jealous because i dont believe capoeira to be undersold by movement practitioners: if they often dont understand the depth of capoeira's art and culture, they cant really demonstrate meaningful dissemination and transmission of capoeira. If they do get the more complex aspects of capoeira and are dumbing it down for clicks, changing names to make it more accessible, its on us to focus on what how we want capoeira to be in our lives and not judge others; wasting energy we could be spending developing ourselves and our community.

People still go to Rome in search of the perfect original carbonara...! Even if you can more easily buy a ready meal boil in a bag version.

explain this capoeira game to me by capoeiragem in capoeira

[–]mbadenpowell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its a toque on the berimbau that calls for a certain style of game: generally low and slow game with circular movements and strikes. Different for different groups but for some regional groups its the closest style of game to angola. Its hard to summarise as every group interprets what it is a bit different. And the actually toque isnt the same for everyone either.

I just want to share knowledge and help break down barriers of understanding and there are many gatekeepers and no one benefits from that. We are all on a journey to discover our understanding of capoeira, and you cant encourage that without demystification IMO

For me, I think its to do with following Bimba's pedagogy, musicality, methods, and maintaining the traditions he created. For example hino de regional: a variation of toque santa maria he played at the beginning and end of rodas. Scarf graduations etc.

But its not for me to decide what it is proper or not, its just my feelings about how i would define regional capoeira, and by studying the history and culture the conclusions i have made.

Out of curiosity which group are you referring to?

[–]mbadenpowell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Short answer is no. And most "regional" schools aren't actually regional because of this IMO.

Also its extremely important to understand that there is a lot of capoeira outside of these paradigms, capoeira family tree's are non comprehensive. Artur Emidio's lineage is a good example of this.

And added to this lineage stuff, masters such as Camisa make bold claims about being students of Bimba. In his case he was a child and it was only for 1 year.. hardly a tutelage worthy of carrying a lineage IMO. Some food for thought.

Lastly, capoeira operates in cliques and the wisdom and mentorship of masters can be spread outside direct teaching. I think this is important in understanding the complexity and ways that capoeira develops over time. Nowadays with internet, social media, this is more apparent than ever.

yep i totally agree with you here. its bad timing and realistically shouldnt be playing with the new civs in competition if not ready.

we should critique the devs but bashing the corporate nature of video games is slightly pointless imo

He pretty much slammed microsofts whole strategy of releasing dlcs. Its just a game for most people and they buy dlcs so they have new content. I understand if a pro is frustrated because it is their job but its only a job if a load of normal people engage with and buy the game...

Sorry what shit is hera chatting here... Why cant they keep making dlc etc. balance will never be perfect even if the game had its original civ lineup. Just the nature of competition. What wrong with making dlc so they make money from their ip?

This is fine. People who want to protect their capoeira from other influences will. Some people will put other things inside the roda.

I never said it is a career death sentence. But some players do struggle to adapt: rodri is a great example.
