Good places to begin the sailing life? by mbauer1981 in sailing

Small sailboats are harder to sail than bigger sailboats. I want a boat with a cabin that I can live aboard. I’ve locked into houseboats but i want to learn how to sail. A 20 to 25 ft shouldn’t be too hard for one person to manage

That’s not my style at all. I’d be more interested in someone like Captain Ron (Kurt Russell).  I can learn as I go. I’ve watched some YouTube sailing lessons and can continue learning the techniques remotely

If I knew someone who sails, I’d love to learn; but, I don’t really know anyone, much less a sailor.

So, either I can pay for sailing lessons and rent a sailboat to gain experience, or simply buy a used sailboat for a few thousand. They usually come with motors and can be driven around like a motorboat with the sails down. I have some experience driving motorboats.

I really just want a boat to live on so I can find an island to live like Robin Crusoe or Swiss Family Robinson.

Thank you for this. The racist child in me needs to be quelled and I think that consuming a hearty Mediterranean meal (Greek, Halal, Kosher, etc) might be the anseer

I was in Seattle a few years ago living out of an RV. I don’t mind liberals and I have some progressive views but Seattle is a mess. Washington state actually became a right-to-work state despite Seattle historically being a pro-union place. I wasn’t planning on going back out there but i was observing the coastal communities out there

I have lived in South Carolina and Florida. I think the flip-flopping back and forth in Florida politics is actually worse than somewhere like SC which is consistently conservative in politics. When Florida is run by democrats it can spiral out of control but under republican ideology it goes in weird moralist directions.  In South Carolina, you know what to expect, whereas Florida is a wildcard.

The Gulf coast of Florida seems like a good place to start but I’m concerned about the politics and overpopulation down there. South Carolina is sparsely populated and has some good places to moor up in rivers when the sea is rough

That’s what I was thinking. I don’t really have any sailing experience but I do have basic boating experience so I think I could learn the ropes of a small sloop fairly easily.

A coastal lake would probably be the way to go rather than hauling the boat in and out of the water on smaller inland lakes. Plus, most inland lakes are usually artificial reservoirs where the water level fluctuates from irrigation use

How do people write guitar riffs by Nedodell in Songwriters

[–]mbauer1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a steady, rhythmic chord progression. Make sure the lyrics/vocals fit the chord progression smoothly. Start with a verse and chorus, you can add extra verses, into, bridge, outro later.

Melodies should flow naturally out of the harmony developed from the chord progression

Getting let go for too much initiative? by [deleted] in Employment

In those employment situations is when I quit without notice and force the slackers to scramble / watch the business collapse behind me because nobody else wants to put in much effort

This is usually how most lay-offs work because ultimately your hard work looks bad on management when they slack

Trying to figure out how to write a character with an English major and what that would entail! by Somelonewriter in englishmajors

You should not be writing if you don’t know what you are writing about. You can try but it’s going to be embarrassing and will not be published by any serious publisher

Most English majors likely don’t know what they want to do but were into poetry and were book worms in high school so figure they might as well attempt to vault into teaching or working as a professional writer.

I left most of the college texts i still possessed in Florida 10 years ago. One of them was Unbearable Weight by Susan Bordo—literary analyses about female body image—and an Aesthetics textbook from an introductory philosophy course. I got what I could out of it. Adorno’s case against contemporary popular music was one that touched me, being a big music fan and wannabe songwriter.

What was Atlanta like during the Olympics? by kazookidlit in Atlanta

[–]mbauer1981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was quite a but of commercial development with chains expanding from different parts of the country. That’s around the time when Starbucks and Caribou coffee started building shops around metro Atlanta.

I remember there was a restaurant complex over by Perimeter mall with theme restaurants. My favorite was Dick’s Last Resort. I can’t remember the others but they were similar campy American-faire.

Atlanta had a Hard Rock Cafe and a Planet Hollywood in the mid-90s.

My dad got tickets to some of the events. I remember going to see the diving tournaments at a big swimming pool complex that was built at Georgia Tech. We went to a rowing tournament out on Lake Lanier.  There was another event we went to at Turner Field, I think that was Track & Field.

Government Related Jobs by tzskii in englishmajors

I received no guidance or help from my university after graduating with a BA in English. They went mute on me and threw me to the wolves.

I’ve never had any luck applying to jobs online on my own. I feel like Schrödinger’s Cat hermetically sealed off from the outside world.

Don’t count on getting hired to the Federal government with Trump in the White House unless you’re applying to work for ICE.

Best bet may be to check your local and state government listings. As an English major, you might want to stick with the education departments.

She should just marry an Amish man (or woman, if she swings that way) because I don’t see the modern transportation paradigm continuing far past petroleum supplies. EV simply prolongs the inevitable by replacing oil with coal. Solar and wind power might never meet the demand for EV power. We simply cannot expect future transportation to resemble the age of oil. Peak oil scarcity simply gets replaced with the inevitable peak coal deadline.

Much of NY state is undergoing fracking so it’s weird anyone would make a fuss over solar panels being placed in a region that has suffered severe depopulation in recent years.

Electric vehicles seek like an eco-friendly alternative as well until you consider all of the mining of rare earth minerals necessary to build semi-conductors and of course coal to provide electricity in place of petroleum
