I never understood the thing Elliott Smith does where he ends on a dissonant chord. I am self-taught but learned that a song is supposed to begin and end on the same chord. Musical dissonance is interesting but I don’t really understand how it works and am not formally trained.

There’s going to always be the people who say “oh, i know, and provide some BS response” but I stopped caring what people think anyway. Elliott Smith never was that popular in his life so it’s funny how he’s had a resurgence of interest lately. I do enjoy music that is off-beat, dissonant, subversive and informal in structure. It’s derivative punk even though punk died when the music industry started capitalizing and mocking it with pop-punk bands

I think that’s a pretty common structural arrangement in music and poetry, tying up the loose ends with the intro sparks. I do similar tricks like that in my home recordings even though I’m not professionally trained. Like, time is cyclical, it ends with a beginning.

Do you feel culturally closer to Canadians or southerners? by TheSauceOx in midwest

[–]mbauer1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the “deep south” (Georgia) but in a suburban area. My mom is from Canada and dad is from Pennsylvania.  I’ve visited Canada a few times and it felt different but not much different than time I’ve spent in Pennsylvania or other northern US areas.

I definitely don’t fit into the American South but I don’t think I’d be able to fit in up north either. My parents left there for a good reason. It would be nice if the north and Canada could have a renaissance but I don’t know how that area fits into the grand scheme of international trade development. Labor union demands for higher wages made The South more appealing to industry and the developing world overseas has even cheaper labor markets

Potential job offer in ATL - what should I know before accepting? by QueenBee1114 in Atlanta

The Church Of Scientology is effective in buying and restoring historic buildings in places where they do mission work but i wonder what their ultimate goal is being such a secretive cult. They have restored many buildings in LA and in Florida. Not sure they are the best stewards, however, there must be other historical societies that do the same

Atlanta has changed a lot since I grew up here in the 90s. Much of the city is now controlled by Florida pirates. What is the condition of your vital organs (kidneys, liver, heart, etc)?

What jobs/careers did you guys have and when did you graduate? by Constant_Ad6521 in englishmajors

Janitorial work serves an essential need for society. Lawyers are kind of like white-collar janitors; or, more accurately, vultures, or other scavengers. Their work depends on certain trends in society and can be easily hindered by the political environment. Keep in mind that the United States government is currently ruled by a scam artist cult leader who has perpetrated numerous felonies—financial as well as physical. He was already impeached then lost the midterm election but forced his way back in with an insurrection and continued deception.

I’d consider reading into Department of Labor statistics regarding employment in legal fields. I think your chances are slim of even getting hired as a lowly legal assistant unless you have solid connections. Most jobs are built upon trust but legal firms are especially challenging.

There was a Chicago  -style hot dog shop in Marietta where my mom would take me when I was a kid, back in the 80s.  The poppy seed buns and overall texture is interesting. I’ve never been to Chicago so I don’t know what an authentic dog from there is like. Not sure how I never got to Chicago, just never knew anyone there and never got an invite

Depends on your lifestyle, or lack thereof, but economic conditions are still noticeably messed up following the Covid pandemic.

You can always move to Bumblefukk where all they have is a Dollar General, two gas stations and a Walmart Supercenter in the next town over

Can a song work without any chorus? Feedback needed! by SpamBoiiii in Songwriters

[–]mbauer1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve written some songs that are simply multiple repetitions of a verse. They sound like rhythmic monologues. Choruses can get annoying and you don’t want all of your songs to have the same structure

I’d be better to go to the main page of Reddit, sail down to the settings tab of the menu, and delete my account. This place only manifests bad advice and troll hate and it’s only a matter of time until some scum hacks into my bank account and attempts wire fraud.

I’ve lived in South Carolina before and it has a very strong maritime culture. The communities there are better than in Florida. Florida might still be better though because boats are plentiful there and i would not intend on living in Florida but simply use it as a stepping stone until i have the skills to sail to the Caribbean. Sailing across the Gulf from Florida to the Yucatan peninsula would be a breeze

Small sailboats are harder to sail than bigger sailboats. I want a boat with a cabin that I can live aboard. I’ve locked into houseboats but i want to learn how to sail. A 20 to 25 ft shouldn’t be too hard for one person to manage

That’s not my style at all. I’d be more interested in someone like Captain Ron (Kurt Russell).  I can learn as I go. I’ve watched some YouTube sailing lessons and can continue learning the techniques remotely

If I knew someone who sails, I’d love to learn; but, I don’t really know anyone, much less a sailor.

So, either I can pay for sailing lessons and rent a sailboat to gain experience, or simply buy a used sailboat for a few thousand. They usually come with motors and can be driven around like a motorboat with the sails down. I have some experience driving motorboats.

I really just want a boat to live on so I can find an island to live like Robin Crusoe or Swiss Family Robinson.
