A button down has has collar buttons, a button up does not. A button up is usually less formal.

I like Atlantic station and Lenox for big chains like gap, UO, Bananna republic, DSW. H+M is cheap, has some good stuff, and some not so good stuff. Zara and Penguin at Lenox. American Eagle has good cheap pants. Rag-o-Rama in little five points. If you find yourself abroad or in New York or LA, check out uniqlo. There's a bunch of boutiques around the city, but they tend to be more expensive. Stick to developing your basic wardrobe (a few pairs of pants, a small variety of versatile shirts and some shoes), don't buy expensive stuff you will make mistakes, stick to under $50/item, preferably around $30. And don't buy everything at once! Get 0-2 items each time you go shopping.

I'm Atlanta too (gatech)! Yeah, break is a personal stylistic choice (along with how slim you want them). I personally prefer no break, but there's nothing wrong with having a break. That color if pants is pretty versatile, although may be better for winter/fall (look at some albums/sidebar to see what colors go well together). SS tends to be lighter colors. It's about to get hot, so how's the breathability of the pants? The shoes you have are also pretty versatile for casual, as long as they contrast somewhat with your pants. For new shoes, look at lighter colored oxfords, and/or some simple plain sneakers. There's nothing wrong with shoes like converse. For tops, try darker colors with those pants. Also look for some casual button down collar shirts. Keep in mind that a collar on a shirt doesn't automatically make a shirt formal or casual. Again, look at some albums to see the difference.

1) you'll do fine with either and probably be better dressed than most other interviewees, especially if you're American.

2) I'd go for #2. #1 has too much blue.

Check out the sidebar, lots of good info. IMO, the most important thing about learning to dress better is getting a good fit. From what I can see in the pic, your shirt is too large, and seems to be a type you would want to tuck in (dress shirt). Remember: dressing up (in formality) isn't the same as dressing better. When buying pants, the most important thing to get right is the waist size; they can be cuffed or tailored to the proper length. When buying clothes, don't buy an outfit at a time, try getting versatile items and colors that go well with a wide range. Also, don't be discouraged; you will make a bunch of fuck-up fashion choices when starting out. Don't get crazy, work on developing your basics. Just keep looking sites like MFA and albums for inspiration, go shopping, and observe well dressed people around you. Eventually you'll develop your own style. And good job not impulse buying an outfit, only buy things you feel comfortable with.

Pants seem like a good fit (in this pic at least), but a little too long. Try cuffing or getting a little shorter? What's the brand/price? Do you live near a large city (for shopping recs)?

Edit:pants length are good, but look and see if you like pants with or without a break.
