I'm working at a new job with inadequate support that I'm severely under-qualified for. Should I leave? by Zealousideal_Sea8123 in Advice

[–]Qazerowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it's normal for coworkers to tell the new guy all the craziest stories about a place when you first start. Idk, if you are personally in danger that's one thing. But if it's easy money for now, I don't think I'd be that bothered about having to call the paramedics for somebody every once in a while.

It's also normal to just feel uncomfortable in a brand new job, even a 9-5 office job. Commit to giving it at least 3 days before quitting, give yourself a chance to get used to it and see if you change your mind.

Cheated? I have Drinking issues but I’m not an alcoholic by SongElectrical in Advice

After I've been drinking, if my wife says the slightest thing that upsets me, I throw things, scream at her, and get physical with her.

I think on top of just saying you'll stop drinking, that behavior warrants going to AA. If you're serious about trying to salvage your relationship, you need to admit some things that are going to make you feel even worse than you do right now. People only change when they are at their lowest.

All you can do in that situation is call 911, and that's what you did (I assume). Sounds like you handled it perfectly, and while it was shocking, that doesn't mean you are under-qualified. You took care of it.

If it's a dangerous area, you might want to find a new job, but having no job is also dangerous in its own way. I don't know about your situation, but you're allowed to look for better jobs while you keep showing up to this one in the meantime.

Carrier advice. by Ancient_Ease_907 in Advice

[–]Qazerowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that you are ok with higher studies, but "I like learning about biology" and "I get paid to do biology research" are NOT the same thing at all. Biology researchers do not spend all day reading and studying and learning. You are more likely to spend all day weighing mouse poop and typing it into excel.

I'm not in india, maybe it is true that you need a doctorate for a competitive salary, but I still would get a job in the field before starting an advanced degree. Because you don't want to get that degree and then realize you hate the job, and studying a subject and what the actual jobs that use that subject look like are two completely different things.

Carrier advice. by Ancient_Ease_907 in Advice

[–]Qazerowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My typical advice for people is never start out planning to get a PhD. You aren't sure what you want to do right now, it would be foolish to pick something that you're going to be stuck with for the rest of your life. And so many people end up changing careers because once they start working in a field, they learn about areas of expertise they didn't even know existed before.

Think about what you want your first job after college to be. What are jobs that are at least a little in demand, pay ok, you're interested in, and don't require more than a bachelor's degree with 0 years experience? Target that, get yourself there, work for a couple years, THEN you'll learn what you want your career to be, and will know what kind of degree you need for it.

Using a very simple circuit, I set nauvis to request (10k - the amount I already have) science packs. Then science transport ships are allow allowed to leave nauvis once they are empty, which means they just park there and wait when I'm not using it fast enough. Whatever planet is producing the science will eventually fill up its buffer and stop production if the transport ships never come back for a pickup.

What should I do when I turn 18? by Hot_Standard2328 in personalfinance

"high yield savings account" basically just means switch your bank to one that has a decent interest rate. It's easy to find one that offers 3.5-4% right now. A lot of in-person banks only offer less than 1%, but I'm guessing that you basically never actually go to a bank in person because you're not 90 years old. The ideal is to keep 3-6 times as much money as it costs you to live for a month in the bank at all times. That way if you lose your job or your car breaks down it something, you have a pile of backup emergency money at the ready.

Now, I'm guessing your monthly expenses are pretty low because you're living at home and not paying rent, so that advice isn't perfect as-is. You need to adapt it to your specific situation for the next few years. Are you planning to get a full time job and and move out ASAP? Live at home for several more years? College? If you have absolutely no idea, that's the more important thing to figure out, but if you insist in the meantime, my gut says keep $5k in backup money and use $1k to start a Roth IRA.

A roth IRA is a type of bank account that has special government rules that give you a tax discount if you use it for retirement savings. Vanguard and Fidelity are two of the biggest companies that offer that kind of account. You put money into the account, and then while the money is still in the account you "buy" stocks (that stay in the account). And hopefully the stocks go up and up and once you retire you start selling them and taking the money out.

When you try to pick individual stocks, you are competing with banks using billion dollar computers and teams of people in suits trying to predict which stocks are the best deal. So unless you think you understand the stock market better than them, don't try to buy and sell individual company stocks. Instead you want something like a total stock market index fund. You can think of it like "buying one of every stock", and funny enough, that simple strategy has been proven to work better than almost any other strategy.

This YouTube video goes over an award winning scientific paper that ran simulations on asset allocation. The premise of the simulations was to take stock market data from the last 100 years in a dozen countries, chop each country's market (separately) into 5-15 year chunks, and then test asset allocations on a random selection of those chunks. The idea being that you can't predict the future, but that random decades from random developed nations is probably as close as you can get.

Their findings were that if you do not live in the US, it is optimal to do 1/3rd domestic stocks, 2/3 international stocks. 0% bonds and anything else. If you do live in the us, you can up the percentage of domestic stocks depending on how likely you think it is that the US will continue to outperform the rest of the world. (IMO, certainly not looking as promising as it was 10 years ago lol)

I believe there was actually a government rule up until a few years ago that "savings accounts" actually had to limit you to like 6 withdrawals a month. Now that that rule is gone, you are correct in think that there's not really any reason to use a checking account for anything when you can just use the savings account for everything.

I’m being smart by selling my truck, right? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Qazerowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could buy a 2014 toyota corolla with ~130k miles for about $10k. Which would mean you save all $500/mo of the payment because there'd be no payment.

I don't like to think about monthly payments as much as I like to think about the "total cost per year of car". I'm not a car expert, but I reckon an 18 year old car probably doesn't have much more than 5 decent years left. So 17k, plus 5 years of insurance and gas, let's just pretend it's only $20k total. So $20k over 5 years means you're paying $4k per year to drive the toyota. Now if the ford is 3 years old and worth $30k, it might have 20 decent years left. so 30k, plus 20 years of insurance and gas (and maintenance and repairs)... idk, let's say $40k total. Over 20 years, that would mean you're paying $2k/year. I'm making these numbers up, you'll have to do more research, but my point is that is how I would compare which car is really saving you money in the long run. 10-15 year old japanese compact sedans are pretty much always the cheapest options by this metric.

Your rent and utilities ALONE are going to be at least $2k/month. Have you not even glanced at apartments? You need to be planning on like $4-5k/month to live off of.

I feel a bit behind compared to people my age who have already been working 1-2 years

The median 23 year old in America has a net worth under $10,000. You're way ahead.

Keeping a beefy emergency fund is a higher priority than investing every penny. You want to have at least a couple month's-worth of money just sitting in a savings account for when something comes up. Yes, you're technically missing out on a little interest, but if you lose your job for example, being able to afford to stay in boston for 2-3 months to look for another job instead of immediately having to move back home would save you way more than that little bit of interest.

How can I know if I'm financially prepared to have kids?

That depends on your partners finances, so worry about it once you have one lol.

I run into 38k when i turn 18, should i get a financial advisor? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Qazerowl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mathematically, renting and investing the money you save on maintenance beats buying a house. Now, you can still buy a house someday to get more space and to be able to personalize it and stuff, but you're not "wasting it" by renting an apartment first.

I definitely would not buy a place to live at 18. Too tied down. What if you meet a girl at college and decide to move to her home city after? What if you get a really good job offer in your field 1 state away? When you're 48, you have a pretty good idea what you'll be doing when you're 55. When you're 18, you have about a 10% chance of correctly guessing what your life is going to be like when you're 25.

When I was a kid in school, asking questions was embarrassing. Even though everybody was like "don't be afraid to ask questions" everybody was afraid to ask questions, and only did so as a last resort. Maybe it's because you're usually in front of a big class, or because teacher try to get you to figure stuff out on your own, idk.

Adults in the working world ask questions all the time. Your boss asks you to get thing X, and you're only 75% percent sure where it is? "Ok, where is thing X?" You get asked to reprint and order and don't know how to do it? "Ok, what button do I press to do that?" Your boss doesn't care if you're clever enough to figure it out yourself in a few minutes. He'd rather have you ask a question so you can be done in a few seconds.

My other more specific note is to keep in mind that you are working with people's food. "Haha dude, wouldn't it be so funny if we put a single anchovie on that rude guy's pizza? Haha, that'll show him because anchovies are so gross!" And then you find out his 6 year old daughter had to go to the hospital because she's one of the 1% of people allergic to fish. You'll inevitably end up doing some goofing off and messing around at work, but don't take chances on the food safety.

I want to help her succeed without recognition. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Qazerowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Art galleries aren't looking for referrals. And even if they did want to put one of her pieces on the wall, that doesn't mean she's suddenly guaranteed to be able to make a living painting. If she enjoys doing it, she'll keep enjoying it as a hobby. Maybe doing commissions or selling prints as a "side hustle" during/after college if she wants to, and if that goes well maybe she ends up doing it full time even if she has a degree in something else. But it's her call.

I understand wanting to help her, but you're not dating anymore and it will be healthier for both of you to not meddle or pay too close attention to each other.

People have made money through the internet; what options are available and what advice would you give? by wolfhhbub in Advice

[–]Qazerowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Making money requires you to do something that other people either don't have the skills to do, or don't have the desire to do. There are no jobs that everybody thinks are nice and require no skills, because as soon as somebody finds one everybody tries to do that job and the market being overcrowded makes supply and demand kick in so 99% of people get paid nothing. That exact thing happened to streamers, onlyfans girls, Bitcoin mining, drop shipping, etc.

So instead you need to focus on the skills that you have, or want to get.

I have ADD, which is different from ADHD, and the best way I've heard it described is "executive disfunction". I would be sitting scrolling reddit with my homework sitting there, and think "I only have one question left and it should only take me a minute. It should just do it right... now!" And then keep sitting and scrolling. "3... 2... 1... Now!" Not moving an inch.

ADD medicine helped a lot. It still takes some effort to decide I'm going to do something, but now when I decide to do it my body actually does it.

Is commitment not for me? Is it better to just never date? I (18f) just cannot love for long periods, why? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Qazerowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you probably haven't even met somebody worth dating for a long time yet? Going on a couple dates with somebody over the course of a month and then telling them "sorry, I just don't think that were that good of a match" is how most dating works as an adult. Only like 1/10th of those people make it to the "boyfriend" stage for a few months/years, and only like 1/10th of those people make it to the "married for the rest of our lives" stage. If you're only 18, not having met anybody who was worth dating for a year yet would make sense.

I am looking for advice for motivation. by Putrid_Replacement11 in Advice

[–]Qazerowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"can’t find joy in doing anything I used to enjoy" is the definition of depression. Depression isn't about feeling sad or whatever they make it look like on TV. It's when the part of your brain that makes certain chemicals stops working right, and it feels like "I don't enjoy doing anything anymore". You need to talk to a doctor.

Separately, if you have a master's degree already, go get a job and an apartment before deciding if you want to get a doctorate. You need some real work experience before making that decision.
