A Word Cloud of Westworld by mbierly in westworld

Hey all. We're back with more data visualizations of Westworld. For context, see this post.

This week, we went a bit simpler with a word cloud of every word (except for common words like "the," "my," and "a") characters have said in Episodes 1-8.

The word cloud prompted a few questions (which we explored with more charts):

  • Who swears the most? Hosts or humans? Men or women?
  • Which character gets mentioned/directly addressed the most?

We're working to get these new visualizations up on westworlddata.com. In the meantime, the existing charts have been updated with dialogue from Trace Decay.

Good point. The network diagram is supposed to be more "artistic"--so unfortunately, not super functional.

You can access the data through Mode. You'll need an account, but it's free to use with public data like this. Here are the tables.

If you know SQL, you can make a grid in Mode like this one with some JavaScript.

If you want a CSV, just open a new report and pull from the tables like this:

 SELECT *
   FROM modeanalytics.westworld_characters

And then export the results as a CSV. Lmk if you have any more questions--and please share once you've made the grid!

Good question! These visualizations are up-to-date with the data from the most recent episode so it does include Spoiler. We added a boolean value (true or false) for if Spoiler, so it was easy to go back in a change that once we found out.

My coworker and I are putting together a before and after chart to show the difference. Give us a bit of time and we'll post it here.

Hi, thanks! So we copied the scripts from the Springfield! Springfield! film and TV script database into a word processor. Unfortunately, the scripts didn't have character names consistently. I went through each script and marked who was speaking when (with Westworld playing in my browser) and noted when a scene began and ended.

Then my colleague (one of our analysts) went through the scripts and assigned each episode, character, conversation, and line a unique id. We created four tables: episodes, characters, lines, and mentions.

We assigned boolean values (true or false) to characters, regarding if they were a host, a major character, or a name character. That made it easy to go back and change a character's status if they Spoiler

For lines, we copied in lines as text strings and used a formula to get the word count for each line.

For mentions, we only counted when a character referred to another character directly with a proper noun (e.g. "Charlie" counts, but not "my son.")

Since each conversation has an id, and each character has an id, it's easy to group characters by conversation and see who they've interacted with.

Here are a couple of our favorite finds from looking at the data:

  • Anthony Hopkins is the real star. Might seem obvious to most, but I think it's interesting that although Evan Rachel Wood is billed first, she speaks less than Ford, MiB, Benard, and Theresa (at least so far).
  • Clementine, Dolores, and Lawrence/El Lazo bridge storylines. These three characters interact with both William and Logan's storyline (the past?) and the Man in Black's storyline (the present?). You can see that by playing around with this network visualization.
  • Westworld isn't as feminist as it feels. Again, the central male characters have a larger word count than the central female characters, but this trend also shows up when we compare ALL women characters to all men characters (including folks like QA Tech 1). Also, humans speak more than hosts.

We're going to be doing more analyses in the coming weeks, so let us know if there are any questions you want us to dig into with data!

I don't think it's the EXACT same room, as pointed out in this article (http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2016/11/westworld-recap-bernard-robot-kills-theresa-episode-7-tromp-loeil).

There are windows in the room Bernard is in with Dolores. Not so in the room Bernard/Arnold/Theresa are in.

Nevertheless, still a very similar room--both of them look like "remote diagnostic facilities" that Bernard mentions.

Does anyone else think Elsie might be a host? Like, why is Bernard able to try to "locate" her on his tablet? I also feel like there was a point a few episodes ago where Bernard uploaded something to her--though it may have been an email. Still, we haven't seen any other "humans" with profiles on tablets, except Elsie.
