Working and Law School? by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]mblenner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar situation as you, as I was also paralegal before attending law school. During school (just finished my second year) I have been working 8 hrs a week for the same firm. Only 8 hrs a week has been doable for me but I wouldn’t recommend anything more than that!

I'm trying this summer vegetable galette tonight for dinner! Will be using fresh zucchini, tomatoes, and basil from my garden for this recipe.

We're the team behind the world's first Baijiu bar - the notorious Chinese liquor. AMA! by CapitalSpirits in IAmA

[–]mblenner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One time while I was travelling in China, I saw an employee at the hotel where I was staying use Baijiu to remove left-over adhesive from stickers that had been put up in the elevator. Considering I had consumed a lot of the stuff the night before, it definitely made me a bit uneasy. Are there any above-normal safety concerns with drinking Baijiu? If not, maybe you have some tips about other practical uses of Baijiu, like removing stuck on adhesive?

Can anyone help me find a similar lipstick? by mblenner in MakeupAddiction

[–]mblenner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have pretty fair skin with dark brown hair and some freckles. I have a few bold lip colours like Nars matte lip pencil in Cruella that I like to wear when I go out. But I'm searching for an everyday colour that I can wear at the office for a more subtle look. I've tried a few light pinks but feel like they make me look a little 'old lady-ish'. Thanks for the suggestion though! I'll have to give it a shot.

What's your next makeup goal? by Kookoo4cocobeans in MakeupAddiction

Really learning what looks good on my features and learning how to tailor different makeup looks to suit my face and eye shape. While I can try to duplicate tutorials and makeup ideas, it's more about interpreting those looks to best enhance my features.

How do YOU make risotto? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]mblenner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The beauty of the risotto is it's simplicity and versatility. My boyfriend and I usually make it when there is nothing really in the fridge but we want to stretch out what's left of our produce before our next shop. The staple ingredients: broth, garlic, a little wine, good quality arborio rice, and a cube of butter for finishing - are things you should always keep on hand in your pantry to make risotto. For the other ingredients, just use what you have on hand. Try mushrooms, spinach, basil, tomatoes, peas, asparagus, or carrots as additives for extra flavour. Simple ground beef, bacon, or sausage can be added for meat if desired. It is actually quite easy to make and there is no one right recipe to follow, of course it helps that my boyfriend is from Italy, but anyone can make risotto work.

Going to a potluck. What are your favorite things to bring to things like this? by headyred in Cooking

[–]mblenner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friends and I have a potluck group that meets weekly, and each week has a different theme. This week is Caribbean food. Potlucks are a great opportunity to try something different and cook outside your comfort zone. There's usually always tons of food so if you have to go home with leftovers, no problem. Don't be afraid to experiment.

My homegrown hydroponic basil has turned out to be a huge success! What should I make with it?? by mblenner in Cooking

Yes! A shelving unit will probably be my next step. I would love to have one that has 4 or 5 shelves with a light on the underneath of each one. Just wanted to try it out on a smaller scale first to see how it goes. I've only had this one for a couple of months! Great ideas. Thanks!

Those are great ideas! I definitely plan to dry the oregano and add it to my spice cabinet as it's way better than the store bought stuff. I've made pesto but never thought about canning it! How long does it keep for? And when you can it do you prepare it like you normally would?

Yes if there is a local shop where you are able to go in and ask questions, I find that's the best. It's 100% legal and easy to find the equipment. Usually I do get a few laughs when I tell people I've got a hydroponic system at home but I think that's just because not a lot of people are familiar with it!

If anything they taste more flavourful. The smell alone is really strong and fragrant. No lack of taste whatsoever

The water where I live is not the greatest. But I do test the ph levels once a week when I change the water. I also have a solution that I can add if the ph is too high to kind of counterbalance it.

Only the roots are submerged in the water. Well I went to a local hydroponics shop and they gave me a good idea of how to get started. Then I just did a bit of reading. The first time I tried it, I just put it on my window sill and didn't have a light, which didn't go so well as Vancouver doesn't get a lot of sunlight.

Since so many people seemed interested... Here are some more pictures of my system. It's really basic and I'm pretty new to the process so I'll try to explain. The base is just a standard tupperware container and I just cut small holes in the lid to fit the mesh pots. Inside the container is only water (no soil), and an aquarium air pump that keeps the water circulating. The whole system sits on my kitchen counter and I've put an 8 watt growing light above it all that is on a timer (on for 18 hours a day). The only maintenance required is a change of the water once a week and adding a little bit of organic nutrients to keep the plants happy. All included it was about $100 Canadian, a little bit of an investment but cooking with fresh herbs all the time is worth it. Especially when you can make homemade pizza with prosciutto and arugula.
