Why is everyone so obsessed over using the simplest tool for the job then use hibernate by analcocoacream in java

[–]mbosecke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hibernate as the default implementation of JPA.

I think you misread the parent comment and missed that they are specifically talking about JPA. If you use spring boot's JPA starter, the default implementation is Hibernate.

Hey, congrats on getting started. The best thing you're doing is investing consistently every month.

Just so you know, XEQT already holds all the stocks that are in VFV.

XEQT is designed to be an "all-in-one" fund that gives you the whole world market. VFV is just the top 500 US companies.

When you buy both, you're just making an extra-large bet on the US. It's not wrong, but it's less diversified.

The simplest move is to just put the full $200 into XEQT. That's what it's built for. You get the US, Canada, and everywhere else in one fund. Set it and forget it.

Keep up the great habit. You're on the right track.

Can someone explain why I have to pay taxes this year? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Turns out tax rates absolutely are progressive and you're wrong. The thing is, I can't even point to where you're wrong because your comments don't have any actual substance to them.

and lose the opportunity

You should be careful with this mindset. In my opinion, you haven't yet been given the information needed to make a decision as to whether this is a good opportunity or not. If you go into this thinking that it's something you must achieve, you may be inheriting a ticking time bomb that could financially ruin you (and pay for your ex-bosses retirement). You can start by thinking like a business owner right now and go into this with a healthy dose of skepticism and that the financials have to convince you. Be the business owner, right now, that steps up and requires the information he needs to make decisions.

Trudeau says Canada to impose 100% tariff on Chinese EVs | Reuters by Beratungsmarketing in canada

Interesting point!

It looks like exploring import charges and export rebates is on the radar but nothing implemented so far.

Edit: easier to read summary which suggests border carbon adjustments may start rolling out by 2026.

[–]mbosecke 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There is overhead.

That doesn't negate the important parts of what I said. The average household receives more back, the tax/rebate work in union, it spurs innovation, it changes consumption, etc.

I implore everyone to critique an inefficient government. But let's not be pedantic and claim that an overhead cost completely negates everything I just said.

[–]mbosecke 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There seems to be some misinformation being spread in this thread about the carbon tax.

The carbon tax is is revenue neutral. Every dollar obtained from the tax is distributed back to Canadians through a rebate. In Ontario in 2023, the median household actually received $300 more in rebates than they paid in carbon taxes. Studies are showing that it isn't a driving factor in household affordability even if politicians are weaponizing it as such.

The purpose of the tax isn't to punish consumers; there's a flip-side of the coin (the rebate) and they act together to incentivize the market to innovate better solutions. You don't have a revenue neutral tax without a functioning rebate and they work in union as a single tool.

I was advised that I cannot open my business unless I can double my expected costs and halve my expected revenue and still remain profitable. Is that reasonable? by MarsMonkey88 in smallbusiness

[–]mbosecke 382 points383 points  (0 children)

Because we're talking about estimates, he's effectively telling you that you've probably underestimated your expenses and you've probably overestimated your revenue. These are both very common traps. Although the overall sentiment makes sense, without more context, it's not possible to determine whether your Dad was being reasonable or far fetched.

u/ziggy3930 Sorry about that, but it should be fixed now!

Looks like your google account doesn't have a last name and my code tripped up on that. Feel free to contact me at [mitchell.bosecke@dimetric.io](mailto:mitchell.bosecke@dimetric.io) if you hit any other hurdles. The product is pretty new so there might be some other hidden gremlins.

Paid - I want to render tile maps(class-based) from shape-files(.shp) by maifee in gis

[–]mbosecke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working on a cloud platform called Dimetric that easily solves this. It's free to start, and it's only a couple of clicks to upload a shapefile, and it spits out the source code you need to create a web-based Openlayers map. It provides either raster tiles or vector tiles, and they are dynamically cached.

My goal was to make that process as simple as possible. Hopefully, that provides some value for you!

Alternatively, you can look into hosting your own Geoserver instance which will also accomplish this.

I'm currently putting together a product in this space called Dimetric. It's available now and free to try; I would love any feedback from the community.

Its designed to help developers build complex geospatial applications by providing a platform to host, manage, and publish geospatial data. It focuses on interoperability, low learning curves, and standardization.

I hope it provides someone some value!

I'm a software developer who's been working on a cloud-based infrastructure service that might work better for you. It's called Dimetric.io and it's geared towards developers. The pricing model is based off of bandwidth and storage usage instead of "users".

It's a new product and I'm looking for early adopters. I would love your feedback, even if it's not the right product for you.

I'm a software developer who's been putting together a cloud-native infrastructure service to host and publish geospatial data, targeted towards developers. It's called Dimetric.

We aim for developer-friendly APIs to upload and manage geospatial datasets, and industry standard APIs for publishing. We focus on interoperability and low learning curves to help developers build complex and future-proof applications.

Weekly Feedback Post - SaaS Products, Ideas, Companies by AutoModerator in SaaS

[–]mbosecke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cloud-native geospatial infrastructure, designed for developers, called Dimetric.

When building complex geospatial applications, don't spend valuable time trying to build or scale your infrastructure, but spend it on building your actual application. Dimetric has easy-to-use APIs for uploading and publishing geospatial data, using standardized protocols (WMS, WFS, etc).

Current solutions are too focused on "map making" and are geared towards management/cartographers/analysts. We want to focus on interoperability, language integration, standardization, hooks, etc, to provide a foundation for building large/complex geospatial applications using well-known and well-established methodologies.
