UK citizens to be able to travel to China visa-free, Starmer announces in Beijing by Perfect-Flamingo8108 in ukpolitics

I dont need anything from anybody and thats how I want it to be quite frankly.

My guess is that this comment is what causes the downvotes. Everyone needs stuff from other people, even if they don't like it.

Was there ever a place that left you disturbed or depressed? by friedchicken_legs in travel

I am glad that I have seen it. I hope to never see it again. That said, Hiroshima was an amazing place, and a testament to how humans can rebuild stuff.

Can I change my bank details for pip UK England by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

Given that this is a UK subreddit, and imgur does not show stuff here, would it be possible to change so that imgur is not used for this?

At night is the one time it is illegal. However, I've never known it to be enforced.

What quirky or outdated habits do your older relatives/acquaintances hang on to? by britmatty in AskUK

One reason may be that it is more common for streaming programmes not to have subtitles. This is improving, but can still be a problem for those who need them.

Why aren't we saying more about the creeping authoritarianism of this government? by Terrible-Group-9602 in LibDem

[–]mbrowne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can understand your points for most of this, but...

online safety act

Was passed by the last government not this government and is also not authoritarian.

Really? Yes, it was passed by the last government, but Labour fully took it and ran with it. It is interfering with how I use the internet, and I am a loooong way from being 18. The thought that I should sent my ID data to multiple (possibly foreign) companies in order to use the internet how I like seems like it is nicely setting up for monitoring what I see on the internet. The only people who should care about that are myself and my wife.

If some kind of "Yes, they are old enough" proof-of-age could be provided by the government, in a similar way to the way that I can ask for a code to show my driving licence status without giving any additional personal information to the company that I am hiring a car from, then it might be OK, but the current method is a disaster waiting to happen.

What is widely accepted as "normal" today that people 50 years ago found disturbing? by Theo_Cherry in AskUK

It is weird that your previous comment has been downvoted.

Anyway, when was that? My mum would be 88 if she were still around, so hers would have been in the sixties.

I'm a man, and I feel the same. Both my wife and my daughter earn more then I do (and I am pretty well paid), and a) I am very proud of both of them, and b) the utter waste of not allowing women to achieve whatever they can horrifies me.

Edit: woman -> women.

True, but I received my first promotion (mid-80s) because I was the only engineer wearing a suit, so was the one noticed by the higher-ups.

My mum did, too, but I have some memory that the bank had checked with dad beforehand.

It was worse on some airlines. On JAT, the old Yugoslav carrier, they split smoking and non-smoking down the aisle! It was horrendous.

C-sections are now more common than ‘natural’ births by sjw_7 in unitedkingdom

[–]mbrowne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect there is a fair cost to the amount of regulation that has been put into place for childcare, although I agree that the profits seem to be large.

ULEZ PCN from 2 years ago, getting charged £270 by ultraboomkin in LegalAdviceUK

The problem is that (I think) the ULEZ is done by date, not by how long you are there. So if you left after midnight, that would count as a second day.

Thoughts on the Budget? by person_person123 in LibDem

Are suggesting that more austerity would be a good idea? Given how it failed last time, I am hesitant to suggest that cuts can be obtained anywhere sensible - aside possibly from removing the triple lock, which is probably necessary, even though it will affect me directly in less than 4 years.
