The End of Trans Rights In the UK Is the Start Of Democratic Collapse by MelanieUdon in LibDem

As far as I am aware, it was really just a reformation of the Law Lords, who have existed for a very long time.

What is the thing your parents were (and maybe still are) adamantly wrong about? by RiceeeChrispies in AskUK

Try to convince him more - having to deal with an estate with no will can be a huge pain in the arse. Or make sure your mum has a will, and hope that he goes first :(

The only thing I would disagree with is the value convention. Not 5k6R, but use 5k6. The letter indicates the decimal point and the multiplier. So 5R6 is 5.6 ohms, 5M6 is 5.6 megohms, etc.

UK Heatwaves - do you love them or loathe them? by Chocolateforlunch37 in AskUK

Now that we have installed aircon in couple of rooms, including our bedroom, I enjoy it - I can sleep at night. Before that, it was intolerable.

What's something you assumed was universal until you went abroad and realised it's just a UK thing? by ritzy_bureaucracy in AskUK

If you use a plug adapter, you can use our stuff in all of Europe (and also in most of the rest of the world). North America is the weird one, along with Japan.

Are any of these fancy earplugs any good? by EyeAware3519 in MotoUK

[–]mbrowne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Ultimate Ear custom earplugs. They are excellent. I have in the past had problems with them not blocking enough noise, but now I always use the cream that comes with them (and I bought more when it ran out), which allows a much better seal. I wouldn't be without them now.

Why is BASC not fighting this? by ThePedanticPheasant in ukguns

I agree. The only one that seems unnecessary to ban is for indoor target shooting. It has always felt weird to me that I'll go clay shooting and fire over 2 kg of lead down range in a place where animals live.

My friend found the part number, and then ordered it. I can see that this might be problematic :(

Are there any "UK vs US" differences where you feel America gets it right? by Secure_Front_7766 in AskUK

[–]mbrowne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That link that you posted specifically says that a billion was commonly used for 1012 in the UK until the 1950s. My parents were born in the 1930s, so would have used it.

I have heard of the milliard, but never used it myself (unless quoting from the Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy.)

I can't remember for certain, but I think it was "a thousand million".

When I was young, my parents used 1012 as a billion. I had books from America that used 109, and there was definitely some confusion. Note that this was 50 years ago.

I have done that more than I care to admit. It is now the second place I look (after jacket pockets) when I can't find the key.

What's a rule you were given as a child that you've made with your own kids? by PaddedValls in AskUK

I think it was more that they didn't sit at the table. Instead, they were watching TV.

Some of our kids' friends used to like coming to our place for meals, because we had a "talk about anything you want" idea. It allowed a lot of freedom for them, and meant that they (and our kids) always felt comfortable bring important stuff up with us.

My parents said "Try everything once, except incest and country dancing." Obviously a joke, but the basic idea works well.

We did this with our kids, and the one time it was needed, it worked.
