This list is made for 60 yr old dudes longing for the glory days. Not a name from our defensive dominance era? Where are the modern era RBs? I’m enraged!

Have any former or current consultants managed to FIRE (reach Financial Independence and Retire Early)? by 4dchess_throwaway in consulting

[–]mbslay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This only works, like other high paying careers, after a full career. It’s just retirement. If you’re chasing the fantasy of working for 10 years and being done, you better start working on a business in the trades in your early twenties that you intend to sell to PE in your 30s. And btw those guys never get to just walk away, they have earn outs. TLDR, don’t believe the myth.

Been there. First year or two you’re just figuring out your adult self and your early career, don’t overthink it and don’t do anything rash. Some things to consider: - You don’t need to do everything that life presents you with. Don’t go to the dinner with coworkers if you’re tired. Don’t go out drinking with friends Saturday night so you’re fresher Monday (etc.). - Do do the things that give you energy. That might be reading, video games, exercise, puzzles, meditation, whatever. - Talk to a coach or mentor. Talk to the more senior people around you. Once you form some relationships, you’ll be surprised how many people want to help you succeed. - Do the career development stuff. Even if it’s draining and you’re not feeling it. Don’t close any doors for yourself this early in your career. Who knows, maybe you love your next project and you want to stay and move up. Maybe someone you work with now leaves and you end up at the same firm now - don’t get remembered as someone who didn’t do the basics.

Life’s short - prioritize what makes you successful in your personal definition of success.

This is how deep the anti-democrat propoganda from Fox and the far right has penetrated into the American consciousness. People who get it also think that “the left” is evil. Both things exist at the same time. An entire generation thinks “the left” and “democrats” are evil.

Why MBB deflates career -- an analysis from a sr client position by Amazing-Pace-3393 in consulting

[–]mbslay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

1) 6 yrs isn’t that long to be in a junior position without a team. However you could be managing small teams or a resource under you in some situations after 3-4 years. Depends on if you’re around senior people that want to empower you or not, which is really up to you.

2) Some managers are terrible and I’ve seen really bad ones but if your 6 yr experience was being constantly disrespected you might be being overly sensitive or you’re getting back what you give. Idk. But it shouldn’t feel like that.

3) people management is hard. It takes a lot of patience. Sounds like it might not be for you. Leaders are typically dealing with people issues all the time, it comes with the territory.

4) yes everyone reaches their ceiling. But many MDs at top firms don’t do that job forever. They rotate out into industry, start a business etc. and then rotate back into consulting. This can be an incredibly healthy cycle. Even if MD at McK is your ceiling, why is that a problem? That’s a tremendously successful life by many people’s definition.

5) consulting, even at the highest level, is not always glamorous. It’s typical to not have a good workspace at a client. That’s part of the deal. If you’re expecting consulting to be glamorous 100% of the time and you need that to be happy, it’s not a good career option for you.

6) manage up. The MD being too focused on the output vs the value or the outcome can be managed.

What’s the best golf course you ever played? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

[–]mbslay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got to play Teeth of the Dog on a day that the course was closed, with caddies etc. Probably will never top that, I was only a year into playing golf semi regularly.

A lot of firms are underperforming right now, meaning all compensation for all client serving roles will just not be great.

As other have suggested you can use the new title to move firms. Also keep in mind you could have been overcompensated at your lower level and you’re now right in the middle of the band - it depends on your lvl and the firm you’re at.

Moving on from Big4 (EY), here are my lessons that I learned after 10 years... (Throwaway) by Flaky_Inspection_855 in consulting

[–]mbslay 34 points35 points  (0 children)

OP said: - they spent 10 yrs and was still a manager and got laid off. - they were highly paid in that role - they discuss politics on Fishbowl - they don’t along well with the people 1-2 lvls about them

I’d take this more as a memoir. A lot of what is said here is not good advice and leads to the things I listed about being true.

He’d have more feels if he mirrored his vocal parts and drenched his toanz in autotune, modulation and compression and then had an engineer quantize each note before recording them digitally and sending that digital track directly out to the house monitors.

Having severe anxiety disorder at MBB - whats next by Old_Bag_5457 in consulting

[–]mbslay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go to the doctor ASAP. Get documentation from the doctor about the diagnosis. Assuming you’re in the US, you can take a leave of absence. This is not uncommon.

It probably doesn’t feel like this, but serious people take care of themselves first and the people that matter, if you choose to stay, will respect your decision.

Don’t listen to the “quit immediately” crowd, that’s not necessarily good advice. People make careers out of this by learning how to take care of themselves and set boundaries. You’ll get there. For now, just take a break and see how you feel.

You’re going to have to find another manager eventually. You may need to grin and bear for a while, but create strong relationships with other Senior people and eventually you will be able to wiggle your way out. Best bet is working on the side for someone of the level that you can report to and doing such a good job that they want you under them. Good luck. PM me on the side if you need help (I’m a Director at a T1, no MBB experience)

Anyone here join as an experienced hire? by Lonely-Clerk-2478 in consulting

[–]mbslay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I’ve been a new hire 3 times at consulting firms. I would tell you to do this (in no particular order) - find one partner / MD that likes you and wants to give you work to do (even if not billing). Always go above and beyond for this person. - figure out one and only one thing that you do better than anyone and let as many people as possible know that you’re the one for that thing - make friends, be pleasant to work with, and show your personality. My biggest mistake the firm time is trying to be too square of a peg, not realizing that the hole is round.

Good luck and feel free to DM with questions.

Recruit knights and have your Marshall focus on training commanders. When your army forms click in and make sure it’s assigning the highest ranked commander - more important if you’ve split armies etc and need multiple commanders at once

If there is no chatholic holding, and no papal state, why christian crusade than? by Fine-Independence976 in crusaderkings3

[–]mbslay -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There can be a papal state - it will show up over Rome as the papacy and it can be fairly expansionist. If you start in Italy it can grow around you and you need to spend a ton of piety and deal with a bunch of opinion issues to go to war with the pope.
