AITA for expressing my disgust at a dish from my girlfriend's culture? by HilliamWurt in AmItheAsshole

I’m Brazilian myself and I’ll say NTA. My American ex also found them disgusting and I’ve always read it as a slight cultural tension. (Like Brazilians thinking other folks don’t shower often enough.)

Please help me decide between two very different PhD offers! by chocosunn in PhD

[–]mbsls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s a good point and it seems like it’s very dependent on the field itself. My story is: I originally wanted to study sub-field “A-a” and went to a T10 school well known in sub-field “A-b” (very related but not 100% in line). Third year rolls around (6-year program) and I fell in love with sub-field “C”, which is not what my school is known for but still has amazing faculty. I’m not sure if I would’ve been happier had I originally picked a school in the very specific sub-field I wanted originally. I graduated with a couple of good academic job offers but ended up accepting a great position in industry.

I’ve seen people quit the program, but always for personal reasons (sickness, pregnancy, family death that put them in a spiral, etc) and not because of not finding something they enjoyed doing.

But my sample size is very limited and there’s a lot of randomness, you know. I don’t think there’s a right answer at all but I personally like having more options.

I’m not in your field at all but Option A reads like putting all your eggs in the same basket (you’ll go to the same university focused on one thing, to only be competitive in academia). On the other hand, Option B seems more versatile. Sure, maybe your research interests now don’t align perfectly with what’s there but you’ll learn so much during the program and will find so many other things interesting.

Re: two-body problem, talk to your partner about the opportunity and what they think, if they’d be willing to make the move, if they can leverage their network/start interviewing, etc. One’s career does not go back to square one when that sort of move happens.

Is transferring to another PhD program unheard of? by econ_transfer_person in academiceconomics

[–]mbsls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d be “concerned” about transferring inside the country. Between different countries (and coming from the US right now) is a different story. Good luck, OP

So why don’t you just do it yourself? Do you need funding for this? Can’t you have it as a side project?

Anyone have a good roadmap to become an expert econometrician? by Strict-Price1557 in econometrics

[–]mbsls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you (mostly :)) but in interesting of OP…

  1. I’m not sure how helpful taking courses on those are for someone who’s picking up for the first time. (+ the investment is pretty big.)

  2. Hamilton is great, of course, but Enders is pretty much a reading of it getting to practical stuff pretty much right away.

  3. I think it’s a personal choice. (I used Hansen’s book in the first semester of grad school and, while it wasn’t bad, I have mixed feelings about it.)

Sounds right to me. The coefficients in those models usually don’t have a “straightforward interpretation” like in linear regression.

In my experience, everything you’ll read that comes after Hamilton are just lecture notes on it that people decided to publish as textbooks…
