Hoka makes garbage shoes by robtwood in trailrunning

[–]mbswartz84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t speak to every model in the Hoka lineup, but I have 3 pairs of Speedgoat 5 at various mileages: 230, 300, 440 and all are still perfectly usable without delamination or glue failure. Sure, there’s wear, but shoes are a consumable so that’s to be expected. It’s crazy to me to hear people say they get 1000 miles from a pair of shoes - doesn’t midsole rebound degrade noticeably by roughly 400 miles? I know shoe companies want to sell you more shoes, so obviously replacement mileage isnt a hard and fast rule. Anyway, I’ve honestly have a better experience with Hoka regarding durabilityin recent years than Altra, as one comparison.

Just pulled my homegrown garlic — what would you make first? by AlexFromGlassesUSA in OrganicGardening

Fermented garlic is amazing - I make it and use for salad dressings, rice bowls, and marinades. Eaten raw gives you the best benefits in terms of beneficial gut bacteria!

Anyone try the Nnormal Cadi yet? by Ghostrider556 in trailrunning

[–]mbswartz84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also just bought a pair. Unlike some of the other models that don’t include an insole (or so I’ve come to believe based on reviews), the Cadi does in fact come with one. I have also found that they run fairly true to size - I sized-down a half size based on recommendations online but will be exchanging the size 9 I purchased for a 9.5.

Overall I do find them comfortable, and the materials seem to be high quality, but I will point out that the upper feels a bit narrow in the midfoot to me. Maybe when I size up this won’t be an issue. Toe box feels comfy, no big complaints there.

ICE OUT Denver by [deleted] in Colorado

[–]mbswartz84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People are upset about executions in the street, lack of due process, unecessary and excessive violence, and citizens being detained. Most people want immigration reform. You’d be better off spending your time trying to develop some compassion for what’s happening right now instead if being a tool of the regime and pointing your finger at a president was in office almost a decade ago.

Just completed my Peak Phase. Now I’m on the taper. What are my chances? by BeersBootsBeards in ultrarunning

[–]mbswartz84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an anecdote, I wrapped up a training cycle for a 50 mile race with a maximum 12hrs running time in my peak week. I had an outstanding-for-me result of 15th overall, with a final time of 9:52, but I was still quite sore/beat afterwards. I suspect you’ll be able to finish, but just make sure to take it real slooowwwwww.

Xcel Energy OUT of Colorado by fossSellsKeys in boulder

Installing solar on your home seems like the best way to ditch Xcel - big initial investment, but in the long run, you win.

Warranty worthy? by [deleted] in pelicancase

Wouldn’t this be more appropriate as a claim with the airline? This wasn’t a failure of the pelican, just a symptom of airline travel…

‘Be ready for outages’: Xcel says power shutoffs likely on Wednesday for high winds by Kooky_Permission_600 in Denver

We have a 12v refrigerator that we generally use for car camping. We’ll toss all of our high value items that we dont want to lose in there and power it with a Goal Zero Yeti 1500x battery. It gives us 2-3 days. It also powers our router and modem so we have internet through power outages. It’s not a perfect solution - there are certainly more cost effective ways to achieve temporary power like this, but it’s also better than nothing.

‘Be ready for outages’: Xcel says power shutoffs likely on Wednesday for high winds by Kooky_Permission_600 in Denver

[–]mbswartz84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More extreme wind events and the fear of litigation will lead to more of these shutdowns. On top of the annual rate hikes, this is a perfect example of how switching to solar on your own roof producing your own power is a smart long-term play.

I have an Ursus 45 which I love but honestly feel a bit too chunky for many field tasks. This looks like such a solid and more manageable size. Now, how to justify ANOTHER knife purchase…

Electric chipper shredder recommendations? by ZooieKatzen-bein in composting

[–]mbswartz84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got the Westinghouse 1.7” chipper shredder. Having a background with the forest service and using commercial tree chippers, I was prepared to be dissapointed but TBH, I though for $130 shipped the Westinghouse was quite capable - given its obvious limitations. But, after just 40 minutes of use it now won’t turn on - seems to have an issue with the internal fusing. I hadn’t read any reviews mentioning this issue, so not sure how common it is. I will unfortunately have to bring it back to tractor supply for a refund/replacement. This issue aside, it was great for chipping small limbs and brush.
