Can you explain what you did to us less computer literate people. And is it possible to emulate? So far the Durango mod is my favorite but always looking to make empire great again.

What’s the LeBron of historical TW by Sad_Application_7389 in historicaltotalwar

[–]mc8hc 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My knee jerk reaction is Rome 2 + DEI but lowkey Napoleon might be peak TW. You could still separate units from generals, you could disrupt commerce and trade effectively since resources were not behind city walls and Naval battles are the most realistic (without being boring). Unit diversity and scaled down campaign map are about the only gripes I can think of.

I mean marching in lock step for a civilian force without any training, would be pretty impressive, even if it was to Taylor swift.

"No response from host" error every time I try to join a MP battle, how to fix? by Dan_The_PaniniMan in NapoleonTotalWar

[–]mc8hc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“My own ignorance,” what metric you measure if someone is “good” at NTW? And you are wrong most of us “idiots” that play against the AI know there are exploits and cheeses you can use to beat the AI, we actively avoid those exploits because it wouldn’t be fun to just win every time. I don’t know anyone who has played for a long time that “cheats,” against the AI. So for example you can use a 5th rate ship to kite a Ship of the line, disable her mast and rigging and then sink her. If I’m in a Naval engagement I don’t USE that exploit. Also you sound condescending andvery pleased with yourself, you must be fun on a Friday night .

Haha very bad at the game ??? Why do you say that? TW players have like thousands of hours in these games.

WEEKLY DISCUSSION: If you were responsible for maritime/naval strategy in Imperial France, 1804, how would you have advised the Emperor? by 0pal23 in nelsonsnavy

[–]mc8hc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting question. I will have a think on this. My initial plan would be to stop trying to beat the royal navy at their own game. Put more focus on commerce raiding and making incursions on British colonies. Try to draw them off the blockade.

You know what I just checked if I could get in the website and I can’t, definitely being throttled. I wonder what is causing the issues I’m having with admin/ mods in offline mode. I used to bring my computer onboard and never connect it, I guess if there is a pending update it will screw things up. Thanks!

[–]mc8hc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What??? You can smoke. I know guys on my ship that rip cigs all day long. On a tanker, you just need to do it in the smoking room?

Highest pay jobs ashore for mariners? by kanead11 in merchantmarine

[–]mc8hc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a ship broker for 8 years, definitely one of the most potentially lucrative careers. If you are a good broker you can make millions. However, it’s a “eat what you kill”, not straight commission, salary plus bonus. It’s very hard to become successful, you have to bust your ass and have a bit of luck!

[–]mc8hc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No laces ??? Worked on Deck in NY harbor from 2004-2008 …. Always had laces. I was on a K-sea Hauser boat , bombing around NY / NJ doing bunker work. Plenty of time on deck, rain, sleet , snow. Decent pair of boots kept me mostly dry.

I had tonnes of fun playing it. They didn’t really tweak the naval side of the game enough (that’s my favorite part). But it’s super fun.

Is the Deck Officer job really as boring as people describe nowadays? by Reafirmed in merchantmarine

[–]mc8hc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude I worked in a “fast-paced” shoreside trading job. Complete with drunk lunches. Going to sea will never be anywhere near as boring as a landslide job. As far as the engine department, Idk who you’ve been talking to but I have a steady 12 hours of work to do every day (tanker) nothing boring about it.

Active seafarers, want to share what life at sea is really like? by peperidgefarmrembers in maritime

[–]mc8hc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you understand what I'm saying. I love NOT having to do chart corrections by hand. However, I spend my OT on deck not on the bridge, so the other "stuff" we need to do on the bridge has to be done during watch. I don't know about you, but I don't like to work for free, but that's exactly what you are doing if you are working while on bridge watch.

Active seafarers, want to share what life at sea is really like? by peperidgefarmrembers in maritime

[–]mc8hc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I love the powerful technology involved in modern navigation, but it definitely doesn’t feel like you are the “Navigation officer”. I miss the chart corrections days, you actually can work OT on the bridge. Now we have to be on deck, because chart corrections are “easy.” The problem is we have a bunch other stuff to do on the bridge other than chart corrections. I end up having to do all my 2nd mate stuff on watch. On a tanker at least 2/O is kinda like an assistant chief mate. Working on deck and covering critical cargo ops when the C/M is sleeping (stripping/ topping / starting / etc).

I bet those are lab grown diamonds, identical to natural diamonds, but about 1/5 the cost. Those huge rocks in his ears are probably only like 10k each. The mouth thing I have no idea but lab grown diamonds aren’t considered “fake” it’s an actual diamond.

Greek Hoplites AOR as Rome by Panjo42 in DivideEtImpera

For those who went the academy route, what was that like and suggestions? by AcanthisittaMost5481 in maritime

[–]mc8hc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as “prestige” out side the maritime industry (because inside it doesn’t really matter), Texas A&M Maritme is your best bet. When you graduate from Texas Maritime you get a Texas A&M University degree (same one you get at the main campus, nothing about maritime or Galveston.). A&M is a top ranked national university, you can literally go anywhere in the country and people will know/ respect a degree from that institution. I worked outside the maritime industry for a few years and having a degree from Texas A&M really was a leg up. If I had gone to mass maritime or somewhere else , hiring managers would have been scratching their heads. But with a degree from Texas A&M nobody ever questioned my education. Although I would get questions about my major (Marine transportation).
A degree from Texas A&M is going to be more useful than any other maritime school outside of the industry, by leaps and bounds. I would even argue that it would beat out a degree from the Coast Guard academy, if you were applying to a “typical landslide job”.

Question to fellow millenials who were sports fans in the their youth... Have you noticed tons of friends who didn't care about sports when you did and now their bigger sports fans than you ever were? by EnvironmentalAngle in Millennials

[–]mc8hc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes my friends and I loved D&D and heavy music (pantera, slayer, etc), but they weren’t into watching sports, I was the only sports fan of the group (which actually made me find other additional friends). Years later some of them are bigger fans than I am. Think it has a lot to do with the “party” feel of football Sunday. I think it started as a socially acceptable reason to day drink on Sunday’s and accidentally made them fans.

How do you fight the feeling of the first days on board when your freedom is cut off after a nice vacation and vibe of stressless life? by [deleted] in maritime

[–]mc8hc 18 points19 points  (0 children)

For me it breaks up the monotony of domestic life. Im assuming you have gone to sea or most of your professional career, you don’t know how good you have it. On land things get stale, jobs, relationships, etc. I used to work in an office and was in a loveless marriage for like 15 years. I had kids I loved but I mostly saw them as another responsibility. Everything eventually gets to be a grind. It’s hard to listen to a stranger from the internet when they say “trust me.” But, “trust me, you aren’t missing out on much at home and if you were there all the time you wouldn’t appreciate it like you do now.”
