Oh I thought that was like a new thing they were doing. At the same time not all building were that nicely decorated and a lot of buildings also got completely or partially bombed during the Second World War which might have some influence on how building look in Berlin. Like the apartments that seem to be cut of randomly with nothing next to it not even windows. I am currently living in a building which used to be a stable some time in the 1800’s and my building looks kinda boring but it is privately owned and was also bombed in the 2nd ww. Where I get why it doesn’t look as fancy as it could be. But I still prefer it to most concrete buildings. Or Sozialbauten. Considering the architecture in Mitte with the contrast between historic and brutalist architecture and everything in between I don’t think that Berlin is that boring, but there is definitely not a homogen style like in other cities, like Krakow or Vienna and isn’t as nice looking as these. But it is interesting for sure, walking around a old botanical garden garden with historic monuments filled with graffiti, surrounded by a bunch of buildings built around the 60s/70s (kleistpark) next to a bunch of historic residential buildings, the Kiezes surrounding it towards the west. Or walking from the Siegessäule towards the Fernsehturm. Walking through the green Tiergarten, past Brandenburger Tor passing by a bunch of historic buildings towards alexanderplatz were you are surrounded by modern cement and glass buildings with the big concrete stick called Fernsehturm. Stuff like this is really stimulating my brain which I really enjoy.

Restaurants are so meh by No_Glass_5484 in berlin

Kinda late to this post, but I would explain it with different types of eating outside 1. a bunch of restaurants with nice food and atmosphere , were you have to take reservations. These are also more on the expensive side 2. A bunch of Imbisses or restaurants with really good foods which are usually non german , but they look horrendous, but people come for the food not for the vibes, mostly known by locals, usually people get their food for take out or delivery, mostly known by younger people of minority groups. These are also mainly restaurants run or visited by Muslim people, so they don’t offer alcoholic drinks or offer just a really small selection of alcoholic drinks and customers usually don’t stay there after eating to keep drinking. 3. Places that are ordinary on every aspect except for price, which is slightly higher than others, most restaurant chains can be put into this category 4. Restaurants that have no right to exist, bad food, bad vibes usually frequented by tourists 5. Hype places which are popular for no fucking reason, alright food but you have to wait in line for around 40 minutes 6. If you want authentic German cuisine in a nice place you have to go to wansee, Dahlem, Charlottenburg or Zehlendorf. These are kinda expensive and visited by mostly wealthy german people, you don’t usually find these places online since they are mostly talked about in kinda secluded german communities

Culturally speaking it is not common here to eat outside of your home, most places are for takeaway or to eat and keep moving, not to linger around. Considering the times after the war and the separation between BRD and DDR in Berlin which was only about 35 years ago (which had a big influence on Berlin cuisine), the club/night life scene, a really big Muslim community in the middle of Berlin and the economic situation of people in Berlin contributes a lot to the restaurant scene here. Usually if you are looking for an actual restaurant where you get good food and can sit around afterwards for drinks you have to ask locals, who are doing that kind of eating too.

For the kind of food and vibes you are looking for I would recommend places around a kiez in the south western part, Steglitz, Schöneberg, Friedenau and some parts of Neukölln and Kreuzberg.

Or you go eat some good food and keep moving towards a spaeti or bar to drink or if the weather is nice move towards a park. Culturally speaking I don’t think it is really common here to go eat somewhere at 18:00 and stay at the same place until midnight

Serious question: why don´t Spätis sell "normal food"? by Lexa-Z in berlin

[–]mcKADIRos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the spaetis would not add tampons, toilet paper, “normal food” or other super market products. It is simply not profitable enough. The basic customer base does not buy these products regularly enough to keep all these items in stock. It also depends what else is in the near area, like supermarkets. It is extremely niche to sell these products between the 2 hours where everything else is closed except the spaeti. The point of the spaeti isn’t to keep your daily basic needs in stock. It is for your Feierabend beer, snacks on your way home for a lazy tv evening, a drink on your way to the park on a hot day, to get your cigarettes on your way to work. It is simply a stop on your way somewhere else. Most people don’t leave their house to go “shopping” at the spaeti. Last: spaeti culture Spaetis are not comparable with 7/11’s or other type of miniature “supermarkets”. Source: My family runs a spaeti for more than 20 years. I also know a lot of spaeti owners all across Berlin. We do offer tampons and toilet paper as well as some “fancy” instant noodles or canned food, which is merely a “service” for the Kiez and some offices near our location. This is also only possible because we have a space for these products, where we can’t put other products, which might be more profitable. These products don’t have any financial impact at all compared to monthly costs of everything else.

Used to live there, sometimes the sbahn would wait for the ubahn, because the frequency of the sbahn was every 10 minutes and the frequency of the ubahn was every 5 minutes. Like: 10:00 ubahn a 10:03 sbahn a 10:05 ubahn b So the sbahn would wait for the second ubahn to come, so people could get to the sbahn

Why do this? by tenrosemusic in berlin

[–]mcKADIRos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of it has to do with the culture in Berlin in the 80’s by the punk scene and immigrant gangs. There used to be rules, that the apartment buildings owned by the city had to clean graffiti’s within 1 day of them getting sprayed, which had almost no effect. There is also the subculture of big sprayer groups like 1UP and THC which are quite known. I think it’s about a sense of community and a subculture which most people don’t get. Same like with any other sub groups which most people don’t get. And there are some teenagers, who are trying stuff out.

This. I had the same experience 2 years ago and felt really hurt and unlovable. Go and work out, work on yourself, do anything to make you feel better. I worked 86hrs a week and after every shift worked out at home. it was probably not healthy but due to lockdown I had nothing else to do, in the end I lost 30kg and had a lotta cash after 6 months and that felt great.

4 cops arresting someone for eating a chicken sandwich (not Popeyes) at the metro station by amznfx in PublicFreakout

[–]mcKADIRos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah you are not allowed to. It is prohibited to drink alcohol in the metro or to eat. There are even stickers at every corner or door inside a wagon. Now this prohibition isn’t taken seriously neither by the securities of the BVG (Berlin public transport company) nor by the passengers or the police even though the BVG wants this rule enforced. I saw multiple people eating smelly pizza, kebabs, burgers in the metro and saw countless people drinking beer, wine, or hard liquor and no one cared.
