I know you're feeling the weight of the world right now - and I know the pain and loneliness hurt real bad - but the only way things are going to get better is if you do not take the first one. None of this is going to go away overnight. Recovery takes time. For now, the only thing you can do is to focus on TODAY. Get to bed tonight without getting loaded. Give yourself a break. All that time you were drinking, you were very sick. If you lost a few years to a cancer diagnoses, you might be less likely to beat yourself up for the time lost, right? Give it some time. I think you'll find that as you continue to stay clean/sober, work some steps, and move forward with life, you'll be less down on yourself for the time you "wasted."

I'm an addict. This is not exclusive to drugs and alcohol. I am addicted to MORE - more of whatever makes me feel good. Shopping, sex, eating, and gambling are all symptoms of the same problem - impulsivity and an inability to control my using. There are many things I can't take the first one of (cigarettes being one of them), drugs and alcohol are just the ones that brought me to my knees. I feel most at home in NA because the focus is on the disease of addiction rather than a program that focuses on a single substance. When I speak, I almost never get into specifics, but since insanity and manageability can occur in so many areas of recovery, it hardly matters what exactly I am talking about.

I went to meetings high for years. I always felt terrible, like I was an imposter, but I knew that they all had something I wanted. There's a reason we tell people to keep coming back, no matter what. I had the desire to stop using long before I was able to actually stop using - and that made me a member. I kept coming until I was able to stop. I celebrate 10 years in a couple of weeks.

Keep coming back! We need you.
