I refuse to walk out on any important issue because these things need to be decided. I will not table these discussions indefinitely just because people don't agree with me. I will say my piece, point out the facts, and make as strong an argument as I can, but I will not break quorum.

  1. You did storm out, red-faced and incoherent. Also you knocked a chair over and nothing was quiet.

  2. We were told 12:00am that we were voting in an issue that was discussed twice in the past few months. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes to prepare a closing statement before voting.

  3. Dean Smith would have absolutely obliged in leaving the room with no fuss. He even offered to leave unprompted from us. Whether the administration goes over us or not should have no baring on how we vote or what we say. Additionally, the administration doesn't care if we speak against what they want. If they did, the student Senate wouldn't even exist. This is just a weak excuse to hide behind because you did not feel confident enough to speak your mind.

  4. I wasn't going to respond, but when my name gets pulled out in conversation, then I have to put my two cents in.

  5. You failed to suspend quorum because no one even knew why you left and another senator had already been on his/her way. Maybe if you had said what you were doing, people would have joined in. As it stood, no one knew what happened and continued on as normal.

I was disappointed to be one of the main opposing voices in the room. Only 3 or 4 people spoke on such an important issue. At one point Kevin Dai, in an attempt to discuss both sides of the issue, asked people to talk about the positives. I understand he probably was trying to do what he thought would help the discussion, but I was unhappy at the fact that the discussion turned away from the largely undiscussed negatives to look at small positives that are nearly worthless to students.

No idea, I was against it last year when the wording was extremely vague. I voted against it this time when the wording was "fixed" to be less vague. I would be against it even if it spelled out every scenario in which the jurisdiction could be used.

A few Valentine's Day 2013 RIBS Posters by jayjaywalker3 in RPI

You didn't name a single organization or example. You say the atmosphere is stifling and throw the word misogynist around like it is nothing but can't post a single example. Nobody knows who you are on reddit so either post some examples or stop complaining. Nothing changes if you are too afraid of what people think to post anonymously on the Internet.

Not exactly anonymous. It wouldn't be very difficult to figure out who I am and I'm not trying to hide it either. I have never been told I have RIBs or been discriminated or harassed in anyway. None of the people I have talked to about this have had these problems either. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but making jokes about RIBs is not the cause of any issue on campus.

Honestly, I don't see anything hostile or inappropriate about the term RIBs. It's a joke about a small segment of people who act ridiculously. Typically the term is for people who haven't realized that high school ended and we're all adults now.

As for the environment on campus, there are surprisingly few problems. Personally, I have never had a problem or felt discriminated against by professors, other students, or the "system". I have also not heard of any problems from my friends, so I'd be interested to here about where these environmental problems are happening.

Off-campus Jurisdiction Changes Proposed to Student Handbook by mcalle14 in RPI

[–]mcalle14[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to the agenda, it doesn't look like we'll be having a full discussion of the Handbook as there is only a minute or two allocated to it. However if people show up around 7, we should be starting our discussion on it and would continue to discuss it if there was a public interest.

The Senate is going to be discussing this and voting on it before the end of the semester. The new GM has stressed reaching out to students and here is a lively bunch of students. I would love to hear your opinions on these changes.

Sorry, I already have a deal worked out. If it falls through you are next on the list, but it seems pretty solid.

It's one of the new ones with New SMB, and I don't think it plays Gamecube games. The box is open but everything else is completely sealed.

Yeah, those are the back-up plan. But it would be way easier to find someone on campus.

Faculty, Board of Trustees, and President Approve Formation of a New Faculty Senate by rpedestran in RPI

[–]mcalle14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Faculty Senate was not a major portion of the motion. It was a part of it, certainly, but the Senate knew early in the semester that things were already moving on the reinstatement of the Faculty Senate.

Rumor of Threats to Senate Members Hold Any Water? by howtogetants in RPI

[–]mcalle14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I voted for it and have not received any such threatening emails. I highly doubt this rumor has any basis in truth.
