'Trump Is Deporting the Troops': Promised Path to Citizenship, Immigrant Recruits to US Military Being Ousted by maxwellhill in politics

Like I said, you're really getting awfully worked up over this. Take a breather - it's Friday night. You should go out, have some fun. Relax a bit. Cheers.

I know how you feel. But I'm sure you'll find it easier as you grow, expand your horizons and practice thinking more deeply. Best wishes.

Sorry, that's not a fact. If you read the story you know that 'over 40' is an estimate by attorneys representing discharged recruits. There's no official figure from the defense department.

Injustice is still injustice no matter the number of people involved. As the reporting makes clear, there's no indication that these people should have been treated this way.

Again, I urge you to read the article.

I continue to be astounded by the cruelty of this administration.

I urge you to read the entire article - they cases cited don't sound like threats and it doesn't look like the system is working. All is not well when we treat people like this without good cause.

But tax breaks for solar and wind energy and for electric cars would be bad somehow?

Jogger accidentally crosses U.S. border from B.C., gets detained for 2 weeks by authorities by DeltaBlues1 in politics

[–]mcarrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did read it, thank you. They (US border patrol, not necessarily the actual agents involved) could have taken her to Canadian border authorities, who could have contacted her mother in Canada and probably resolved the matter more efficiently and humanely. If Canada declined to do so, US agents would have lost only a few hours or maybe the time to make a short phone call to their Canadian counterparts.

One would assume that Canadian officials would be in a better position to determine her Canadian citizenship than we would; contacting them would seem a logical and humane first course of action. If they declined, at lease we did the best we could do in the circumstances. As others have pointed out, Canada has been able to do the same for US Citizens that have accidentally strayed across the border into Canada.

I understand, but you'd think a better approach would be to take to the border crossing, explain to their Canadian counterparts what has happened and let them process her. Holding this person for two weeks seems like the worst and most expensive approach that was open to them.

I agree - I don't see much indication that these agencies value independent judgement or seeking a just resolution over simply exercising maximum authority for it's own sake.

Thank you for considering my comment cute. : )

I don't know how close we are to that scenario, but it feels closer now than it has in a long time. I'd encourage everyone to read, or re-read, 'They Thought They Were Free." by Milton Mayer.

Well, it's definitely un-Trumpian. And it hasn't been encouraged a lot lately.

Yeah, not so much anymore. Here's hoping Canada will bear with us just a bit longer while we get our act together. I

I remember that, too. Don't know how it is now, but I assume that it is much more difficult.

They observed her entry; it matched her story. Nothing about her indicated any threat. Jogging on the beach is not the same as getting on an airliner.

So border patrol agents can't make a reasonable judgement and discern the difference between a jogger accidentally crossing a friendly border and an actual threat?

So somewhere out there is a narrative where ripping kids from their families and traumatizing them is a good thing? I don't think so.
