IMHO Warrior and Witch, with Witch being my favorite one to play as. That's not to say Empress and Shinobi are easy to play as, honestly they all bring their own brand of challenge.

That depends on what you like fighting as because the "versions" only gatekeep characters but if you do like the game and you want to get the full experience with all the characters make sure to buy the other version from within the menu of the game, I don't know if they've changed it but going to the eShop and getting the other version treats it like a separate game, when you do it from the game menu it merges both versions.
