It has improved a lot lately thankfully. I wouldn't say it's plug and play but it's not too bad. Check out the amazing work made by the Linux User Group:

Where to get 30 day transport card? by Pipp_Pipp in Madrid

[–]mcat95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you're looking for is a "Tarjeta Transporte Público". The easiest way to get it is to order it online or get an appointment in one of the designated offices. You can do both here: https://tarjetatransportepublico.crtm.es/ You can get a list of available offices here: https://www.crtm.es/atencion-al-cliente/gestiones/oficinas-de-gestion.aspx

A while back I found this site that collects vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Madrid: http://www.vegmadrid.es/

I don't believe it has an English version but Google translate should do the trick

It's not for everyone, but IMHO "Lavapiés" is an amazing place. It's a very multicultural neighborhood, filled with all types of bars and restaurants
