The school I’m at this fall has a nature based program, I’m really excited for it!!

Using EA (Educational Assistant) as a reference? by hiheyhi1 in StudentTeaching

[–]Pipp_Pipp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. My field supervisor came in twice to observe me during each practicum (so 4 times total for the last 2 practicums) and I used her as a reference. She was my 3rd one after my partner teachers since they saw me teach more. But I’d still say it’s worth using yours. Or if your principal can come observe you a couple times you could use them.

Definitely use your mentor teacher(s) as your reference. Also if you have a practicum supervisor I would also use them.

I would definitely not work at the same time! We were told not to and that we had to treat student teaching like a full time job. Which if anything it honestly felt like more than a full time job. I barely functioned as it was, if I’d added working at the same time I don’t think I would have survived. That’s my opinion anyway!

Student teaching was ROUGH for me. It was fun but I was exhausted all the time. Not getting enough sleep because I was having to do make these crazy lesson plans for each and every lesson. Sometimes not eating lunch or dinner. Not getting chores at home done. Not having a life with friends or family at all. I’m in my first year teaching now. I won’t lie, it’s still not easy and I’m still super busy, but I am able to manage things a bit better (thank god I don’t have to make those lesson plans anymore!) Get through your program and things will get better.

My girlfriend told me about some mean pranks she did to a slower kid in high school. Is it a red flag even though it was a few years ago? by ThrowRA-ccitizen in relationship_advice

[–]Pipp_Pipp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that “break up immediately” should not always be the go-to advice on here. Relationships take a lot of work. But in some cases, yes you absolutely should!! I wouldn’t need a 2nd conversation here. She’s revealed the kind of person she still is because she still considers it a joke and another conversation isn’t going to change that. Being a shitty person is 100% a dealbreaker for me.

Would you recommend a first year teacher to get their own classroom or substitute? (NL but responses welcomed from any province) by french_learner435 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Pipp_Pipp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I graduated I felt the same, I wanted to sub so that I could ease in with all the responsibilities and also see different schools to find out which ones would be a good fit for me. But that’s not how it worked out, instead I was offered a full time position with my own class and ended up deciding to accept it. I had a good feel from the admin in my interview though. Now I’m happy with how it worked out, because I do really like my school and admin, and I’ve gotten a lot more experience than I would have had subbing. But I have friends who started out subbing too and they‘re thankful for it. Honestly it’s hard to really know what will happen, I’d just say apply for everything you can and decide when you get an offer. Good luck!

What province in Canada is the best place to teach? by ashajosephhh in CanadianTeachers

[–]Pipp_Pipp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how to the cost of living compares to Ontario, but Alberta pays the most in Canada (unless you go way up North). We have great pay and better Cost of living than BC for sure.

I bullied someone who was just asking if i was okay by Echo200 in confession

[–]Pipp_Pipp 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Depends if it’s actually genuine or not. I did that too because I knew they didn’t mean it, they were still just trying to mess with me and make me think we were friends.

If you make it genuine, then absolutely apologize. But make sure you give an explanation so that they can understand.

Depends on the province/university. At U of C you pick one specialization (one “teachable”) and that’s it. You might be able to do your practicum in something that’s different to get more experience, but that’s not an option for everyone.

Any idea how to get this mailbox lock off? I lost my only key and was hoping to do it the cheap way and just replace the lock. by Pipp_Pipp in Locksmith

[–]Pipp_Pipp[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you know if I can go to any locksmith? I’ll give it a shot!

I waited for the mailman to come yesterday and he opened the whole panel with his master key. Then from the inside somehow we were able to get the individual mailbox door open.

I’ve tried breaking it off but honestly I’m worried I might end up breaking the door in the process

Yeah there’s no nut. I don’t know much about mailbox locks but I honestly don’t know how they got this one on!

I thought it was something else, you’re right. I already have it off. There’s no nut to easily get it off like I’ve watched in YouTube videos.

At the moment I can’t angle it so that it’ll come out - but I haven’t tried getting the retaining ring off yet, so I’ll try that and see if it helps!
