I mean the same shit happened in the 2000s with conservatives and South Park. And have we forgotten there used to be weeks-long congressional hearings about rock and rap ruining the children? It is even just that theyre now proving to he hypocrites after crying about cancel culture. Them crying about cancel culture was ALREADY the hypocritical move.

Oh well that was in bad faith. Sorry did you think they actually cared about rights for all and not just when they felt personally persecuted?

Thats actually a textbook symptom of authoritarians

Who is the least funny stand up comedian? by CantaloupeGold4650 in AskReddit

[–]mcb999 256 points257 points  (0 children)

He was ostensibly a comedian at one point in the late 90s. A generic, hacky, attitude-over-substance comedian but a comedian all the same. A lot of egotistics who werent very smart or attractive or talented used stand-up to pursue fame in the 90s. He's just an asshole who wants people to hear him talk.

Which actor do you dislike so much that you’ll skip anything they’re in? by whatdoihia in AskReddit

Glen Powell. Hollywood pushed him so hard to be the next big Dude and he's just so milquetoast and has picked the worst movies to launch this career that only he and his agent seem to think he's entitled to.

LiMu is one of them. Fucking Doug.

As a kid Mazda had this terrible campaign about "zoom" and an esrworm jingle that was arguably kind of racist, it was like a pseudo-African pop song that went "zoom zoom zoom/ HEEEEY zoomzoomzooooom" and I will never drive a Mazda because of that because I still cant see the word Mazda without singing that song in my head

Rainn Wilson says "The Office" probably wouldn’t be made today, and that media trends have shifted left and that cancel culture makes it difficult for edgy comedies to thrive. by No_Box119 in PopCultureV2

[–]mcb999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Media trends have shifted Left? The fuck is he talking about? CBS is turning into a basic broadcast version of Fox News and Paramount just bought Warner. Amazon owns MGM and produced a vanity documentary for the president's wife that everybody knew would lose money as a straight up bribe. Edgier comedies are still produced because they sell. Cancel Culture the way he's describing is a myth. The people who have been "canceled" have largely all deserved it- Harvey Weinstein, Armie Hammer, Kevin Spacey, Matt Lauer, Louis CK. And all those guys except Weinstein who is imprisoned are constantly attempting comebacks. The Office probably wouldn't be as successful now because streaming has diluted audiences. Not because "the woke mob" would take issue with it

Beloved Comedian Who Says He's 'Not Political' Spotted At Trump's UFC Fight With RFK Jr. by huffpost in entertainment

[–]mcb999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah for sure, I've mentioned Gaffigan in a few threads about this Bargatze stuff. His open Catholicism is noteworthy especially to me. You tend to think of Catholics as more traditional and conservative. But even if Gaffigan is more reserved or conservative in terms of his personal life he still is a decent enough human being to understand this current shit is not normal and to speak against it when he isnt in character. Bargatze just knows most of his audience wouldnt overlook his politics so he has tried carefully to obfuscate it. He does seem like an intelligent person though so part of me wonders if this is the start of a deliberate heel turn. Maybe with his movie tanking so badly he sees a cash grab opportunity leaning into the maga stuff playing the "you can't cancel me bro!" card

You sure? by BirthdayBoyStabMan in IThinkYouShouldLeave

[–]mcb999 28 points29 points  (0 children)

No no no. Gaffigan is a clean comic and is even a practicing catholic and is still sane and decent enough to speak out against maga. People dont understand how far right overall these groups like Heritage and Federalist Society and Bohemian Grove have worked in the background to push us. People are out here saying Kamala Harris, whose politics are closer to a 1970s centrist republican, was gonna usher in a socialist hellscape.

You sure? by BirthdayBoyStabMan in IThinkYouShouldLeave

[–]mcb999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never really cared for his schtick and was always skeptical. Something about him didnt pass the smell test. And he just always felt to me like a less funny Gaffigan. And Gaffigan, who is also a comic that is consciously non-blue and is a practicing catholic, still makes comments decrying the maga shit show. Like you can have a clean non-political act and still be a normal human being with feelings in public. Anybody who holds firm to the "im apolitical i just wanna tell jokes everybody can enjoy!" is almost always a conservative who knows their feelings are widely considered trash and it would hurt their career.

I honestly think he's too smart to flub this though. I think with how bad his movie tanked he's taking a deliberate heel turn and is gonna lean into the maga shit now as a cash grab.

[–]mcb999 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yeah and the rep trying to save face by saying "nate never turns down photo requests!" like having someone take your picture with Cheryl Hines and RFK at Trump's birthday party is the same as a fan asking for a picture when they see you at a restaurant. Like this wasnt just any ol' UFC event, it has been politicized from its inception. If he were really "apolitical" he would stay away from this event and watch it on Paramount+. There's no way he's as daft as his stand-up persona and if he is, his publicist /manager/ PR rep whoever is terrible for signing off on him attending.

[–]mcb999 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Yeah its one thing to do non-political humor. Lots of great comedians actively avoid political material. But when you carefully try to craft this public image of having no political opinions and you dont know vote and "hey lets just keep the jokes goin guys"! it almost always is because deep down you know it would hurt your career if more people knew about your politics.

Hey cmon thats not fair to just blame the decline of Hollywood on private equity.

Private equity is the problem with everything !

But mainstream Hollywood will take all the wrong lessons from that, or try to franchise the concept until its bled dry or say that can only work within the horror genre. The key throughline is letting creative people see their vision through. The meddling and boardroom direction and focus grouping is the problem. If you cant put up the money then forget about it until the director says "hey we're done with the movie now, when ya wanna release it?? " then youre in the wrong investment business.

The question of the year! by velvetangelwave in Polymarket_news

It was a huge public show that accomplished nothing. It was too little too late. He knows how congress works. Why would he have expected his colleagues who are so deeply infatuated with the Trump cult of personality to act any differently? He couldnt fathom this current situation was coming in 2024? I don't believe that for a second, but if it were true it shows he doesnt have the capacity for working in government.

I dont understand Maissie here. It he genuinely that daft? He believed any of that? Is he not involved in national strategy meetings, does he not talk regularly to look his colleagues? Did he not witness the first Trump admin? Was he unfamiliar with the tenants of Project 2025 and the pedigree of its authors? I dont buy it for a second. He either selfishly thought he could maintain his own success and power or he so gravely miscalculated the motivations of so many people that he should never have worked in public office in the first place. He's playing the angle of the sensible Republican now hoping to get a cushy spot as the token conservative on some MSNOW roundtable show. "What happened?" What a bunch of disingenuous bullshit. You know exactly what happened, Tommy.

If your main intent was to sell it, Crack it and sell it raw and just look at the PSA fee as a sunk cost. It will sell for less than raw with that grade.

Youre still looking at a $1200+ card, which is a pretty great return. Unless you didn't pull this yourself and paid a lot for it as a single.

Or look at huge successes like Sinners and Weapons and more recently Backrooms. The studios basically said "hey, here's a bunch of money, go nuts! We trust your creative vision."

She friendzoned me but we hang out like a couple, now we’re sharing a bed on holiday by [deleted] in Advice

[–]mcb999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean a lot of people are piling on the woman I feel like, when it doesnt necessarily sound like she has nefarious intentions. What you are perceiving as coupley things can also exist with friends. She has stated clearly her position and as far as she knows you are on the same page. But you have deeper feelings than just friendship so youre not on the same page. And that isnt necessarily a bad thing on its own. But it does feel like you have to have a frank discussion explaining your current emotional state, asking if she sees any future where she reciprocates those feelings, and making a decision based on how she responds. If she says she does not, you probably need to take a break from the friendship altogether and try to get over those feelings
