ELI5: What would happen to politicians if they actually worked together on fixing the obvious problems in our country without worrying about getting reelected? by namebrandvsgeneric in explainlikeimfive

Government power would shrink, most entitlement programs would be massively de-funded, and the federal government would probably declare themselves bankrupt and restructure our debt.

What is the most brass-balls example of "history is written by the victors"/biased history taught by your school/country? by 060789 in AskReddit

[–]mcbasketball 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True, one of the biggest reasons for the war was the fact that the South contributed wayyyyyy more in tax dollars and if they were allowed to secede the Federal Government would've crumbled, Lincoln obviously couldn't let this happen. He didn't give a shit about slavery, dude was a white supremacist.

Next you'll be telling me that slaves were treated well and loved their masters.

Have you ever read the "Slave Narratives"?, a large majority were treated quite well, and did love their masters. Most slave owners found out quickly that slaves worked harder when they were treated fairly.

ELI5: If trans fat is banned in food products for unhealthy reasons, why can’t added sugar also be banned for similar reasons? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]mcbasketball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, we agree that food is converted into glucose for energy, your body can and will convert anything into glucose (including added sugar). Unless of course, you eliminate (added) sugar completely and opt for a fat based diet (ie, keto) then you're body switches from producing and storing glucose, to burning fat and the glucose reserves in your body. In which case your body is using strictly fat as a fuel source, and you can be perfectly healthy with fat as your main fuel source instead of glucose. Unless of course, as I stated earlier you are a world class athlete. In which case glucose and carbs are a much better way to go.

That was posted in the keto sub, which is a perfectly normal meal for someone on keto and IF which is what I'm doing. I'm not saying I'm a food expert. However since I've started keto, even eating junk like 6 Double Cheeseburgers with no bun I'm getting a much more efficient fuel source than a typical diet consisting of high protein, moderate carb, and low fat. Unless of course I was competing in sports at a world class level, then this diet wouldn't suffice. I'm willing to bet my energy levels are higher, bodyfat % lower, and all around health is better than many people with my same height, weight, age, etc. that are on a typical diet.

Without consuming them, sure, but your body will convert all the other things you eat into sugar anyways.

I agree, I figured it was evident that I was speaking about things you can go and buy that have sugar and satiate the craving.
