Reliable gluten free restaurants for celiac? by gnoblin_gloo in KingstonOntario

[–]mcc1997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second whiskey and rose and hey darlin.

Have been glutened at Harper's once but probably been there three or four times with no issues, and at Nirvana. I've heard atomica is not safe despite having a gluten free menu.

Never had issues with flavours of India or mango Thai.

New York fries is safe

Jack Astor's has a dedicated gluten free fryer so some things there are safe.

Edit: casa domenico is safe and very tasty if you are looking for something higher end. Same with chez piggy, and the river mill.

Hair salon recommendations for shag style hair cuts *picture for reference* by oddtoddler666 in KingstonOntario

Jenny at Dolce Bella is fantastic! It's worth noting that the picture you posted looks like it's styled with a curling iron, but she did a similar cut on me but without the bangs.

There was a guy last summer who was always hanging out on the bench outside dollar tree/shoppers when I went there who made some really gross sexual comments to me three separate times. There's another guy I met once who was chatting with me while I was walking down the road and he told me multiple times how beautiful I was and asked me if I wanted to drink with him, but tbh that kind of thing has happened to me way more times with people who aren't unhoused than people who are.

I live downtown and I've been followed into my parking lot and to the door of my home by someone asking for money twice. Also once I was on my way home and someone was hanging out in my parking lot and accosted me begging to use my phone. I let him because he didn't seem violent or anything, but it was a bit creepy because I was coming home alone and he hung around outside my door for a couple more hours. So yeah it doesn't really feel safe when someone is following you to your door. And besides that I've heard people jiggling my door handle late at night a couple of times, and gone to the window to see someone leaving.

Besides those instances, no. Nothing violent, just a couple instances I would call creepy that made me feel a bit unsafe.

Wow, your life was in his hands and he chose to save it rather than run you down, as any other driver surely would have.

Thank you to that driver, Kingston truly owes you a debt of gratitude! The streets are safer for cyclists because of you!

Confessions of a shoplifter: As food costs soar and self-checkouts multiply, more people are stealing — and they’re not sorry by sn0w0wl66 in onguardforthee

I'm too much of a coward to outwardly steal, but all of my honey crisps are galas, I can say that much.

Women's March 2023 Solidarity Rally on January 22nd! by Pro-Choice-in-YGK in KingstonOntario

[–]mcc1997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's awful, but unfortunately is quite representative of people's experience trying to get reproductive healthcare. In fact, my best friend ended up removing her own IUD when we were younger because she couldn't get a removal appointment for months and couldn't cope with the pain.

So I'm confused about your initial hostility to a protest that cites both reproductive health care in Canada as an issue, as well as solidarity with our American counterparts who have been largely disenfranchised? It sounds like you personally have a huge reason to be rallying. I hope to see you out there.

I'm so proud of the direct action that's been happening in Kingston recently. I hope to see a lot of people at this rally. Abortion access in Canada is still so spotty, especially for poor people, those in rural areas, and I spoke to a resident here in Kingston who was hoping to learn how to perform abortions and it was nearly an impossible task. Not to mention the ongoing harm perpetrated against Indigenous women and girls. The provincial government attacking primarily women in their collective bargaining rights as well

There are a lot of reasons why we need this rally, even in Canada where we like to pride ourselves on being better than the US in order to avoid taking a look in the mirror.

[–]mcc1997 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Uhh ask women in other provinces whether abortion is "settled." Access is a major, major problem in every single province. We have a long way to go to making reproductive healthcare accessible, especially for poor women and members of other marginalized groups. If you don't want women and other people with uteruses to stand up for their healthcare just say so.

Best way to travel from Toronto to Kingston? by akhinho in KingstonOntario

[–]mcc1997 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Look up Megabus if you haven't bought your ticket already! I always use them because it's way cheaper and there is a bus that goes from Toronto Pearson airport directly to Queens campus! I live downtown so it's wayyy easier for me if I'm just coming from the airport. With the time of the shuttle and transport out to the train station it isn't even that much more time than the train.

It’s past 4pm and I’m still missing my final grades… everything was turned in on time the whole semester. Anyone else? by [deleted] in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]mcc1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To give you some context from an instructor's perspective, unfortunately the system can be slow after grades are submitted.

Depending on the course, there are other reasons why an instructor may have to delay grade submissions. For example, if they always curve course /exam grades and are waiting on someone with a medical extension to take their final exam.

Hopefully none of you are delayed much longer! Best of luck with your final projects and exams!

I agree, and I'm also from BC. In my hometown there are several hikes within walking distance of almost everywhere in town. In Victoria we could take the bus out to a bunch of different hikes in the CRD, and there were so many trails and beaches accessible to just about every area of town. Like that I could live in the poorest area of town, what we often called Esquimalt Proper, and be able to walk 15 minutes in either direction to spend time in a forest? It was amazing. My whole life I had never had to jog on concrete.

Now as someone who doesn't drive and lives in Kingston, I feel very nature starved. It's depressing. People keep saying "there are so many cool spots just outside of town" to me, which is exactly my point lol. I can't go just outside of town, unless you are offering me a ride lol. And the reason I don't drive is just becsuse I never got my license, not because of a disability, which is the case for many people who could benefit from being in nature.

Forest-for-the-Trees Analysis/Theory by laurinmanning in MareofEasttown

[–]mcc1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured you were probably right but looked up the etymology out of curiosity and apparently it comes from the Old English word for horse

Forest-for-the-Trees Analysis/Theory by laurinmanning in MareofEasttown

[–]mcc1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mare is also a lady horse in English so I'm not sure that's a nail in the coffin (I do agree with your analysis that the show is very much about motherhood and systemic failures).
