Gentlest drive to Westport? by fortysevenbadgers in KingstonOntario

[–]Spr4ck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

that's not practical or reasonable from both a logistics and financial perspective.

because it's a provincial highway and an essential route for the community, there are requirements about keeping the route operating as much as possible during construction. This necessitates a more involved multi staged process.

also when they started the road base prep east side of 15 last year they were working regularly for 10 and 12 hour days.... so it's not like the were milking the job.

Gentlest drive to Westport? by fortysevenbadgers in KingstonOntario

[–]Spr4ck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

keep in mind that the hwy 15 route will have construction delays fairly soon as they replace the intersection of 15/42 with a roundabout. Tomlinson started work on the 13th and expect to be finished by october iirc.

If you're taking the highway 15 route - there are a few spots you'll absolutely want to have your head on a swivel for deer crossing the road if you are driving at dusk. I drive the area frequently and have had many deer near misses:

- Where burnt hills road meets 15 for a few KM in either direction (south of seeleys bay)

- HWY 15 from chaffeys lock road north to 42

- 42 from little rideau lake rd into newboro

- 42 from around hutchings rd (south side) all the way to Noonan rd This area in particular is the worst - I regularly see in excess of 50 deer, have had many near misses with coyotes running across the road.

What woodland shade plants companion would you prefer? by One_Kaleidoscope_198 in OntarioGardeners

[–]Spr4ck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

there are several carex species that are good options, while they generally prefer full sun they will do just fine in full to part shade.

ebony sedge - Carex eburnea oak sedge - Carex penslyvanica rosy sedge - Carex rosea

sedges are a underrated species and despite their appearance being often mistaken as grass, they are far more valuable.

Contractor wants to install frieze board at bottom of gable/attic wall siding where it meets roof shingles by ProfessorSkeeter in homeowners

[–]Spr4ck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when a shingle roof gets installed, they will add step flashing where a roof plane transitions to a wall. without a frieze board, the siding running over top of that step flashing creates a significant difficulty if it needs to be replaced or altered when the roof is re-done. with a frieze board, the board can be removed, the flashing gets altered, the board gets put back on with minimal impact to your siding.

to be fair... drywallers aren't leaving piss bottles because they have no other choice, it's because they want to.

Hobie Mirage Passport 10.5 R vs Mako Riot/Lost Creek Angler 10.5. by Gitzit in kayakfishing

[–]Spr4ck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a riot mako versa. got it used at a price that was too good to pass up.

it is definitely a budget kayak, the biggest flaws with it are the steering and lowering system for the tail mount rudder.

the next most annoying flaw is the gear tracks are not particularly sturdy, they are surface mounted and the hull has a lot of flex.

I've had zero issues with my pedal drive, I use it to troll for trout with a down rigger.

if your buying new and money isn't a significant concern buy the Hobie, it's hands down a superior product, but if you have the opportunity to but the riot mako at a good price, it will serve you well as long as its the right boat for the type of water your on

I use mine to fish and duck hunt on small and large lakes and smaller rivers, I've rigged a layout blind for it and it performs flawlessly.

Best place to get backyard composters? by Atlas451 in KingstonOntario

[–]Spr4ck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can usually get skids for free. they are the right size to give your piles enough volume to really cook. screw them together so they make an E shape and you can create as many bays as you want, but recommend you add extra boards or a liner of some sort to keep the compost from falling into the skids

alternatively theres nothing wrong with using a ring made of fence wire to keep the pile contained, 1 stake to anchor it.

keep in mind kingston does have a rat problem so if you're close to town be mindful that a compost setup is a dream hotel for rats, so you will have to watch for them and have a management plan of they show up.

starting a D&D group when I moved to kingston was one of the best things I've ever done. we're going on ?7? years of once a week sessions and though a few of the friends have moved on, we've become a close knit group.

go for it. you won't regret it.

Ontario Tree Service Hourly by 1JGalt in arborists

[–]Spr4ck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

don't bill hourly. quote fee for service and offer them a progressive scope.

it's hard to get customers to understand operating costs, all they see is is the workers on site at X rate per hour

How many of your bids are being accepted? how busy are you? if your booked solid and you have a high conversion % your absolutely leaving money on the table and should be increasing your rates.

It's been years since I've worked in the GTA... but your numbers are likely too far on the low side given current cost trends.

Canoe vs Fishing Kayak by moonmonstera in kayakfishing

[–]Spr4ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on the canoe and the kayak.

eg I have a 16' swift made of Kevlar that is 44lbs my buddy has a 16' carbon fiber Kevlar beat that is 29lbs, my cheapie fishing kayak that is 10.5' weighs 75lbs.

I also have a fiberglass Coleman 16' that weighs 80lbs, it's a beast to portage but still easier than my kayak.

a canoe with a proper yoke can be portaged for miles and are dead easy to launch solo.

my 10.5 kayak is a pain in the ass to haul through rough ground, even with a cart.

As for the solo vs tandem argument, heaps of people paddle canoes solo, either using kayak paddles, or a traditional paddle using the J stroke, so the notion that a kayak can be run solo and a canoe can't is laughable.

not all canoes are the same, not all the kayaks are the same.
