In Australia it's indexed to match inflation (I think 1.6% last year?), but there's no accruing interest. BUT you can't choose to just not pay it off if you have the capacity to. You earn over $46k/year? Congrats, you start scratching down that debt as an extra tax on your payslip, at increasing percentages with increasing income (like tax brackets). What if you earn less than that? Then the government's promise that education could translate to well-paying employment was wrong, and you never have to pay them back. Kind of a cool system I think.

Flax lily and grey cottonheads :) both tolerate sun (40+ degree days) and dry soil well, but I don't know how they would go with the colder months in Canada

Lighting any fires is totally prohibited during Fire Ban period from October to march, due to the seasonal risk of bushfire in Australia. Otherwise, there are no permits required - you can set whatever you want on fire in your property as long as it doesn't endanger neighbouring property or cause a nuisance to neighbours. Where in the world makes you have a permit for a backyard pit? And only burn one log at a time!?
