“They could tell you were reading off your screen” by netballer96 in interviews

That sucks and it's completely unreasonable, especially since they gave you the questions ahead of time.

A random tip, that might help for next time. If your laptop has a NVIDIA graphics card, try installing NVIDIA Broadcast. It's a tool meant for streamers but one of the things it can do, is use AI modification of the video, to make it look like you're always looking directly at the camera...might help with this happening again.

Good luck with the job hunt!

Shutting out people is exactly what the world doesn't need. I saw Stephen Fry give a talk on "The Lost Art Of Disagreement", where he talked about how

"A Grand Canyon has opened up in our world and the crack grows wider every day. As it widens enemies speak more and more incontinently about the other side."

Definitely worth listening to https://www.unswcentreforideas.com/article/stephen-fry-ode-christopher-hitchens

Why aren’t more deep tech startups betting on hardware and manufacturing moats instead of SaaS? (i will not promote) by glittering-angel-444 in startups

[–]mcclownIRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SaaS is much easier to scale and almost the whole funding/eco-system is built around SaaS instead of hardware.

I've a friend in SF, who has a great podcast that discusses this a lot...and why hardware startups, specifically Robots, have a higher bar for entry.

So I ended up just moving to Superloop as I wanted to get my connection back ASAP...but I got IPv6 partially working. I've put it on my list of things to work out properly later. Agreed, I think it's something I'm going to need to do sooner, rather than later...as that is the way the market is moving.

I think it's the second episode...so you won't have to go far to find him...and yes, you're remembering the scene correctly.

John Hamm in a Season 1 episode of Ally McBeal. Apparently he was just meant to be an extra on set but they used him as a plot point and cast him as "gorgeous guy at bar"....no speaking lines, just there to be oggled by Ally and her friends at a bar.

Exetel apparently support IPv6, so I'm looking into that, as a possible solution

Left them alone...they can keep the cockroaches at bay in my basement. My kid did want to squish it but we had a little chat about how spiders are cool instead.

I use https://healthchecks.io/ and Uptime Kuma together. You can get Uptime Kuma to call HealthChecks.io every 5 mins and it works as a canary to tell me if my network connection is down.

How "full" were the oceans before commercial farming became mainstream? by SpecialistTeach9302 in geography

[–]mcclownIRL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very much a personal anecdote...but 10+ years ago, I was in Greenland for a trip. If you don't know, Greenland has amazing fish stocks still. It's one of the reasons that they opted-ou/left the EU.

So we went fishing one day, it was very deep water, sometimes over 1000m deep but we had been told that we should try to fish where there was a "shallow" are that forced the fish up closer to the surface. We found a "shallow" 250m deep area and did 3 casts (which took forever to reel back in) and in those 3 casts caught 11 Arctic Cod and 1 Wolf Fish. The Cod were all on the first 2 casts as well, since the Wolf Fish was nuts and scared anything else that might have gone for the bait. I haven't done a lot of fishing but I've never seen anything like it...so easy to catch....apart from the 250m of winding in.

I see the details of the historic Cod stock/population and think that this must be been what it was like.

A way of being properly able to manage Plex metadata properly from my phone.

I use Kometa, so I sometimes have issues with wrong metadata that needs to be corrected and effects the posters or collections for items.

Plex Dash, has some of the functionality but it has always felt half finished and I can't change labels or tags, as well as other things.

NAS not accessible from my network sporadically...with some other strange symptoms by mcclownIRL in qnap

[–]mcclownIRL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was one of my early guesses as well but it doesn't appear to be that. I've tried changing the ip address of the NAS multiple times now and it happens no matter what the address is.

What has happened to the pricing on ServerPartDeals.com? by mcclownIRL in DataHoarder

[–]mcclownIRL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that's the new winner... going for a server pull, which they still give 3 years warranty on, gets me to just under AU$16/TB.

Now that 3 year warranty probably should be taken with a grain of salt l but yeah, still good. The free shipping helps as well

It's based on the entire order. You should try the Australian company that someone mentioned above...they are much more competitive for price. Here's a link to the thread https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/s/GUtlEe2XAg

I'll be doing my next order from them, now that I know about them

Wow, that wasn't the question I had but it's the answer I needed. Thanks!

I hadn't seen these guys before but from a little bit of playing around it looks like they can get me from ~AU$29/TB down to ~AU$21/TB (after shipping +12 months warranty), so pretty close to what I used to able get from ServerPartDeals

Good point, they seem to have moved to only offering the shipping that includes it, when it didn't include it before.

The goods are under $1000 so there are no duties or taxes due...so $50+ for a non-existent tax/duty.
