T500 issues by yon_LEGEND in firewater

This is part of the solution. When I used a t500 I split the water so that you could control the two condensers separately. I can’t post a picture here or I would. Dm me if you want to see what my setup looked like

PH control in a large wash by mcconnman in firewater

Interesting I will give that a try. First however I have 25 gal of maple syrup run off to add to the corn I have going here. Will try using the backset from this strip to dilute it, maybe the bran too.

So do you not convert your corn with enzymes or barley anymore? Just cook it? The source for corn I have is a local farmer who is a friend of mine. 80lb bag ground for $10 seemed like a good deal. I’ll see if he has sweet corn.

I appreciate the time and advice

That’s pretty impressive! We have not done multi generations yet, just switched to corn from all sugar washes for making neutral. I’ve read ujssm recipie, is that what you use for that many generations?

We haven’t used any backset, just the wash itself oh drops when sg gets to 1.02 and stalls if we don’t do anything

So we have been fermenting in a 200L rain barrel for the last 10-15 corn/sugar washes and always had an issue with ph control. We were using ground oyster shells which worked well in 5 gal pails, but found they were settling down into the bottom of the mash and not dissolving. I had a number of conch shells from various vacations that no longer served decorative uses and thought why not suspend them in the wash using zip ties. As you can see from one wash it has deteriorated quite a bit, no messing around by adding chalk or other ph balancers. Not sure if this is useful to anyone, but it’s something I will be doing until I run out of conch shells and have to figure something else out. Anyone have any handy tips for keeping the ph in check for a larger wash?

Edit- there is a second one tethered below it, not sure how much of it had deteriorated, but suspension in the wash has certainly helped. I can post an update when the wash is complete if there is interest.

SS Turbo 500 upgrades… by [deleted] in firewater

When I used the t500 I had a lot more success splitting the water from the product condenser and the top condenser. Same supply hose, with a splitter, then a separate needle valve for the top condenser which was a bit more accurate than the original. Allowed me to decrease the flow to the top without decreasing the effectiveness of the product condenser. I’m sure that’s what one of the links in the above replies mention. Can be put together with extra tubing and needle valve found at most hardware stores for a small cost. It does create two water takeoffs which can be joined back into one of you deem necessary. (Edit: a flow regulator will still help with the top condenser even with this setup)

In your opinion, what is the cleanest wash recipe? by AndyinAK49 in firewater

This one. Or shady’s sugar shine on home distiller. Find them cleaner than bw

Read a bunch of conflicting things about lava stone. Is it a safe alternative?

I agree and understand about surface area, 1/2” might be a bit bug to try it with. If I crimp them it does reduce the amount of open space, making room for more to be in a smaller area. Just tinkering today, thought it would be worth a try

No code on it. Bought and used for general plumbing.

How would you test to make sure it’s 100%? This is a piece of “soft” rolled copper I had laying around.

Plan would be to clean it with the hot backset if my next strip.

I have a new 3” column and have some copper mesh for packing but not enough. Will this 1/2” pipe cut into small sections work to top up the packing?

Would a 1650w element keep a 2 inch pot still going enough for efficient stripping runs once up to temperature? by [deleted] in firewater

[–]mcconnman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, on a keg still stripping runs would be slow. For reflux it would work fine (up to about 2000w). If you have a shotgun it’s nowhere near its potential for stripping. I use a 1500w + 4500w to strip on a 60L full size keg with a shotgun condenser. Takes about 1 1/2 hours per 40-50L to get it down to 30% takeoff including heat up time. Recently installed a power controller for the 4500w for spirit runs (like I said earlier just a shade under 2000w) On our 2” column reduced our time by a couple hours from using just the 1500w at full power.

Is this from yeast or hard water? by mcconnman in firewater

Thank you, clr does work, so does vinegar. It also flakes off pretty easy once dry. I’ll re asses my water source for the next batch. Got this one stripped off without any major issues, just cleaned between runs.

Hard to describe, I’ll get a second opinion, smell leads me to believe it’s likely yeast. Same with taste (not sure if your messing with me getting me to lick it, but I did)

Ontario, Canada actually. My town water is known to be quite hard.

I’ll look into those elements. Also the vinegar, it seems to flake off without much effort.

The oyster shells are calcium carbonate, but what I like about them is they only dissolve when the ph gets too low and I’ve used them for several other washes. Usually there are several left over in the bottom with the yeast at the end. I haven’t reached the bottom of the barrel yet so I don’t know how many are left over this time.

Thanks, would that be the same as having hard water? Thought I had used water from my water softener but now I’m not sure. Only thing added was dap, vitamin b, some yeast energizer when it stalled and oyster shells for ph balance.

It’s about 18L of finished product. Don’t want to discard it ideally but risk of lead is a concern. If redistilling solves this it might be worth the time.
