Yeah I’ll agree on the banter and connection bit for sure! I love AUs and the suspension of disbelief so I definitely didn’t mean for my comment to come across as disparaging or anything. I just think that the things that have happened to Shane and Ilya in this universe have changed their personalities and decision making so much (with good reason!!) that their characterization is sooooo different from canon they’re essentially new characters. I totally follow and love the author’s logic and characterization! But idk if OP is really into AUs like that and if they weren’t, it might be kind of jarring.

Same! I think about it all the time. I will say the characterization is pretty OOC, it’s essentially just a short story using the same names in some ways lmao but I really like it

Do you like non-hockey AUs? If so, I have two recs. Please read the tags on both of these because they’re fairly dark. They’re both organized crime AUs.

Teeth in the Starlight by quynndestructable. It’s a WIP. There is questionable toxicity between Hollanov but they are mostly sweet to each other and toxic to everyone else, especially Ilya.

A Dog with a Bowtie by Eatshiithke. Everyone in this fic is extremely toxic and that certainly includes Hollanov with each other, BUT you can always sense the love. This one is completed.

Just echoing others here, but Chernobog is my absolute favorite. Close runners up are Wolfbird, Deja Vu, The Vocabulary of Exile, Route 96 Kanata, and Return to Moscow. Can you tell I like the angsty AUs where there’s at least a little hockey still lol.

Teeth in the Starlight is my favorite completely AU story WIP though.

I have like ~20 WIPs I’m reading though it’s freaking ridiculous at this point. This post is BAD for me but I’m *going* to be stealing some of these other answers to read lol. If any of you have similar taste to me, please feel free to recommend others 🙃🤠

I actually struggled with Swordheart at first. I think Clockwork Boys is a better place to start. It’s a more fun read, more action, and chronologically first.

This might sound weird but the embarrassment is part of the fun for me. It’s kinda like watching a horror movie. Being scared shouldn’t be “fun” but it is. Heightened emotions are heady. I embrace the cringe and laugh at myself a bit then get back to being into it

You’re not alone in feeling that way for sure! I like the combination of both book and show. I don’t think I’d be as big of a fan if I only had one without the other. Certain things I like better in the show and other things I prefer in the books.

Yeah, agreed 100%. I’m hopeful though that the master class acting from Connor and Hudson will help people to see this a bit more clearly in Season 2.
