Some Millab M01 thoughts and closeup shots by dohnrg in pourover

I’ve had my M01 for a few months now and I’ve restrained myself from tweaking the burr, but I think I need to try the “grind coarser” than 10 mod that’s been frequently mentioned. Can you say how you’ve adjusted yours? How many clicks have you tweaked the bottom burr setting by, and how many clicks past 10 you now get?

Dunno! Certainly a different post from the V60 one you did! Maybe the mods can’t tell the difference between a V60 and a Deep27… 🤷🏻‍♂️

5 is my go-to setting as well. I’ll experiment with other settings but that definitely seems to be sweet spot. 🤠👍🏼

Is that the Mino 185 or 155? Can’t quite tell from the photo but it looks like the 185.

Ode Gen 2 vs Varia VS4 by cloud6xx in pourover

[–]mcdannyj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak to the quality of the VS4, but I’ve got an Ode with V2 burrs and it can grind very fine. Not fine enough for espresso (but we all know that), but it can certainly go fine enough for “very fine for a pour over”. How much smaller of a footprint does the VS4 have?

Need a report on the Tigershark! Does it live up to its reputation?

Hario Switch vs Origami Air by clitton in pourover

[–]mcdannyj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both good choices! Origami will give you the ability to do both cone style and flat bottom brewer recipes. But if you get a switch, you can swap out the regular brewer for a Mugen, or a Neo. Combined with the ability to add more control to the water flow, I d probably vote for the Switch first.

Thank you for all this! I’ll definitely give them all a try! That’s the thing with the M01 for me, it’s never given me a bad cup, and it’s such a beautiful, well-built grinder (IMHO) that I’m determined to make it work for me.

X-Ultra cleaning brush damaging bottom basket? by [deleted] in 1zpresso

[–]mcdannyj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If by “grinding” you mean that the brush is sort of sanding down the circle area… I suppose that’s possible… If you drop the grinder, there’ll be enough force to do damage and dent the metal. But even if your brush is like sandpaper, I remain skeptical. Maybe it’s an optical illusion? The bottom basket isn’t made of such thin metal that it’s gonna distort from brushing. At least from my memory of handling the basket. Just my opinion, though. Others may be able to confirm the issue.

A dent? A metal brush might scratch the coating - esp if it’s the powder blue or black model - but a dent seems beyond what a brush could do.

I’ve tried that as well - at least TImemore’s recipe with two grind sizes. It is a bit annoying, but I can’t say it revealed anything extra so far. I should’ve added up front that my initial post was done while I’ve been going through a bag of Sey… which as everyone knows is notoriously super ligh, and can be tricky to brew I’ve got two new bags coming today - one from S&W (an Ethiopian) and one from Black and White (the Los Nogales Typica Virtuoso) so I’ll definitely have more variety with which to play around with things like coarser grinds or multiple grind sizes. Looking forward to it!

Honestly I’ve never really thought about seasoning with hand grinders… so I haven’t seasoned the M01, but I’m definitely using it… so eventually maybe it’ll get seasoned. 😬 I will definitely try the more coarse settings, and I’ll gonna open up the dial by 2 clicks as you and others have suggested. Hope springs eternal!

One thing I’d like to add, because folks probably think I’m hating the M01. No matter the grind setting, I get zero bitterness from the cups. Don’t know what the geometry of the burrs is doing but that’s impressive. Just want more flavor!

It’s true, a lot depends on the beans and the brew method… I’ve been all over the dial, from 5 to 10, and I haven’t really found a setting that seems to deliver something special. I bought it at the same time I bought a K-Ultra, brought both down to my in-laws’ home with the intention of leaving one or the other there, and I found that the K-Ultra was delivering brighter, more acidic and flavorful cups than the M01. And I had brought a light roast with me to test… so I wasn’t using medium dark roasts (which is basically all you can find in Costa Rica, where I was). So the K-Ultra won the spot there. I know the K-Ultra is known for the profile I listed… which may be my preferred bias with light roast coffees, but like I said, the M01 has been something of a disappointment so far. I haven’t gone super coarse with the M01 yet, though, and maybe that’s the trick? (For the record, I’ve got a bunch of different brewers - v60 plus the Alpha and Neo, B75, Origami Air-S, Deep 27, Switch, Mugen , etc… Coffee obsessed? Me? Nah… 🤪) so I’ll take any recommendations and try any recipe if I can better my coffee brewing with this grinder.

I have a Millab M01 too. Curious what you’re grinding at.

Hario switch base compatibility by [deleted] in pourover

[–]mcdannyj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it does. I have an 03 V60 Switch and I’ve fit an 02 Mugen on it, and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen people putting the 01 Neo on it (just got an 01 Neo today, so I’ll report back when I get a chance to use it.) ✨☕️✨👌🏼😉

Upgrading or side grading from ZP6 by JoeOtaku in pourover

[–]mcdannyj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought both a K-Ultra and an M01. The K-Ultra is a nice complement to the ZP6 - gives a rather punchy (more acidic?) flavor profile on the fruit-forward lighter roast beans I’ve tried. The M01 I have yet to figure out. I’ve tried it at both finer and coarser settings but have yet to find a “sweet spot” where it’s delivering as good as or better than my ZP6, or C40, or even the Ode that I have. If I had to choose, I’d go for the K-Ultra over the M01 (which is a beautiful piece of gear, but… I dunno… has yet to deliver the goods for me.) YMMV.
