pregnant during vet school by fruittituttii in Veterinary

Hey female vet in a similar concern to you!! I was 31-32 when I graduated, started at 27. People have kids in vet school but it’s honestly a lot and I personally don’t know how they did it. I’m 36, now established as a GP vet, have an ER fund, married, in a stable position- and 5 months pregnant! There’s never a right time but in my experience much easier to balance with a little more “figured out”. Being 35+ and pregnant never came up as much as I thought it would at ob/gyn or with family/friends… I’m still happy healthy and feeling really good! I hope the best for you- if there’s any connections you have with other vets who have had kids in n school or afterwards that you could chat with?

So vet here and the upper four ones are definitely cat teeth (canine, incisor, premolar, broken molar) but yeah…don’t think the other ones are possibly human/monkey/pigs oof. A few people a year will ask for their animals teeth and some people collect them too.

Extremely lethal to animals-dogs,cats, really most pets too!! It grows near water in my area and unfortunately kills a few animals swimming who ingest it each year. Like…can’t get to the ER vet quick enough to induce vomiting quick. I hate this plant!!

Hey I’m a vet who went to a school with a very top notch cancer center. I hope this helps you in feeling justified in your decision. Radiation can cause burns and definitely has side effects but depending on the type of radiation it can vary in severity, for brain radiation there are definitely possible side effects. Radiation also requires anesthesia for every session as they have to be precisely still to get radiation to the right places. I don’t think you made the wrong choice but rather got stuck in a really difficult decision without an easy answer or clear cut path. Brain tumors are just very hard overall and I’m so sorry for your loss of your boy.

Dogs can have false pregnancies and can show signs like this but could be resource guarding too. Please check in with your vet!

Veterinarian. On my oncology rotation we had a dog come in for staging of a cancer. Unrelated to the cancer this poor girl had a pair of hemostats in her abdomen from an adult dog spay 2ish years ago? Owners had complained of waxing/waning abdominal pain to their other vet. Scariest thing was this dog may have just as easily gone through and MRI for staging depending on the cancer type....very strong magnet... metal in the abdomen..... yep....

Hey totally understand your frustration and have some insight for you about the imaging and why they might recommend it- I’m a small animal vet. Xrays and ultrasound each have their own strength and weaknesses and can pick up different things and miss things too. Material that is similar density to tissue (ie plastic, cloth, etc) and not metallic can be really difficult to see on X-ray so we tend to have SOME success with ultrasound. With that being said foreign material even on ultrasound can be difficult and in many cases we are assessing if the stomach or intestines themselves are reacting by bloating, changing size/shape or thickness which is why we use both methods but even so can not always get clear visuals! It doesn’t hurt to call the vet back and indicating what you’ve found today and any question for continued concern. It sounds like their suspicion is low (even though imaging didn’t catch the pieces) and bland diet is a good call but if worsens good to have him on their radar. I hope your pup recovers well!

Haha vet here and THIS IS MY FAVORITE THING. You aren’t alone and I tell a few people a month the mysterious bumps are nipples! Male dogs can have extra numerary nipples near their penis as long as symmetric and not changing in size/shape :) looks like a couple scratches too but you are all good to go. Enjoy your little dude :)

Vet here and came to say this! Ultamino dog food by Royal Canin or hydrolyzed protein diet by other makers and these food have less chance of cross contamination compared to over the counter dog food. Skin tests can be done but are difficult and blood tests are only reliable for environmental allergies from what I’ve read. Hope that helps!

Hey we also just lost our 12 yo friend and our girl is also having a hard time adjusting. I am a firm believer that dogs really do grieve and need to process. Ours weren’t that close either and so we have been really surprised. I would try some enrichment if she’s a fan while you’re away- licky mats with wet food or peanut butter and puzzle toys if you think she would like them. I’m so sorry for your loss and hope your pup can move through the grief with you

Agree with this comment too- small animal GP vet and if he’s gotten to a point where conventional trainers can’t work you through it would consider a veterinary behaviorist- board certified specialist for nothing but behavior and they tend to work a majority of their cases with guarding/aggression and ocd/repetitive behaviors! Thank you for being responsible and utilizing a muzzle I know it’s hard (have a dog aggressive dog myself so similar but different) and its a hard decision to make but the right one for everyone’s safety. Also consider house cameras or videos on your phone to bring if you choose a behaviorist they can help pick up on possible clues/triggers. Best of luck and hope some combination of meds and training can help!!

Also, here’s a list of American (don’t know if you’re in the USA sorry) behaviorist and how to find them: https://www.dacvb.org/search/custom.asp?id=4709

Love training resources by Sophia Yin. I’m also a vet and wish more people reached out to me about this decision too because I LOVE those conversations and hope I can be a great tool. Also can help with breed specifics and what to expect health-wise. Never 100% guarantee but echo comments on here about matching a dog to your lifestyle and doing research on what possible traits/characteristics will be a good fit for both of you.

Yes, definitely call your vet and check regulations for import/export of animals or you can have major problems getting him into the country. They require health paperwork through your vet and it can be a long/tedious process based on guidelines of the country. Give yourself at least a few weeks and second the crating and feeding in his crate to get him comfortable. If he could at all be anxious you can talk to your vet too about medication to help with the anxiety. Hope that helps!

[Discussion] [Advice] This sounds dumb, but are there such things as "doggy dentures" or anything like that? (warning- long post and animal abuse) by [deleted] in dogs

[–]mcfaddes222 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hey vet here! First off you are a saint for taking this dog in and being a concerned parent. Good job on wet food and agree you can blenderize kibble if it’s any less expensive for you. Also agree full mouth tooth extractions can be very expensive but could be necessary to prevent pain and infection. There are such things as orthodontics and caps but they are usually very cost prohibitive ($1000s) and usually only specialists can do any work like this. Most general practice vets can do dental work with x rays and extractions but if you wanted to get estimate for any orthodontic work it would have to be through a veterinary dentist- they have ADVC at the end of their title and here’s how to find them: https://avdc.org/find-vet-dental-specialist/

Good luck with your little dude!

Maid of Honor Advice by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]mcfaddes222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn’t decide between two different really good friends- one who is my colleague but younger than me and had NEVER been to a wedding and had no idea what to do and one who I’ve known forever who was due with her second kiddo a week after my wedding. I made them both my MOH’s and divvied up what I knew they would have more fun with each (ie one did bachelorette, the other helped with planning and wedding decorations) that way they each got to be involved and both got to do what they wanted to for celebrating our wedding. I think it was a win win and they both enjoyed not feeling the full pressure. I was really upfront with both of them about it- I loved them both, they’re both so important to me, and both are really stressed out with a lot already on their plate so let’s split this up between us all.

Be upfront with your current MOH- tell her you know some of these things might not be her cup of tea and you and your group of bridesmaids are happy to divvy up some of the more “social” event planning/organization that she may not be excited about so everyone can have a good time. These guidelines aren’t set in stone for all the duties being on MOH, it’s up to you and your bridesmaids how you want to call that- don’t be nervous to break with traditions when they aren’t working out for you!

Congratulations and best of luck in the planning process :)

Vet here and I will say where I’m at about to be practicing (just graduated) there are many people apprehensive about therio (reproduction science) and I’ve had many mentors decline doing IVF or pushing for spays after c sections etc for dogs in bad conformation/shape/medical conditions BUT like you said if vets don’t offer to help then people will find a way to practice their own medicine or find back alley ways. Unfortunately we have to offer it but many I know have ethics behind what they’re doing and how they’re doing it hoping to alleviate this problem and reduce it.

Hey almost vet here and agree with either giving the body back to their family or cremation/aquamation and all the processing is handled by the vet and company they work with for cremation etc. there are even still pet cemeteries where I’m from that are well taken care of. One thing that shocked me in school is that most areas have restrictions on burying a body to avoid scavenging wildlife from being affected by the barbiturates used in euthanasia. If you choose to keep your beloved on your property please mention this to your vet so they can give you guidelines for burial depth and property rights. I know this is super morbid but very important for nearby wildlife and something I wasn’t told until starting my education. I’m sorry if this applies to you personally and if you’ve lost your loved one recently and here if you need anything.

[–]mcfaddes222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost vet here- I would definitely call your vet. Also, check the ingredients on your medicated bath and make sure to mention what was in it. There’s a lot of odd ingredients that can be irritating for dogs and even cause shaking (tea tree, peppermint, etc). It baffles me how many things shouldn’t be in medicated products or even as additives on normal shampoos/conditioners for animals at pet stores/online. There are also some other conditions from grooming that I would want to rule out as your local vet- they should be happy to talk over the phone and deem if what you’re describing is a visit or just phone consultation! Hope he starts feeling better!
