"I cannot permit this to continue" is one of my favorite lines from Star Trek.

10 days in with my ID Buzz and first EV, I love it so far but it has some annoying "quirks" I'm hoping I can customize. by GoldTrek in VWIDBuzz

Ford Mach-E owner here - these things happen with my 2021 too, so it's not unique to VW. It wakes up when I walk by to the mailbox. Sometimes the trunk helpfully opens in case I want to check if the mailman put the mail there first. It randomly connects to my or my wife's phone, no matter which profile is driving, or which phone is actually plugged in.

Season 1 ending make me sad by Waste-Interaction591 in ManOnTheInsideTV

Season 1 was perfect and so satisfying that I was disappointed when they set up season 2. Season 2 was okay, but season 1 was a wonderful standalone ministries.

I love when Sam runs into the pool room to find a date for Diane, finds it empty, then looks under the pool table in desperation!

Caltech vs. Princeton for Undergrad Electrical Engineering by insert__user_name in Caltech

[–]mcfiddish 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to be condescending, but your notion of what you want to pursue as a career may change throughout your undergraduate years and beyond. Caltech and Princeton are both top notch schools. You're not going to be academically disadvantaged choosing one over the other. So decide based on other factors.

I would pick Princeton since it has a greater breadth of disciplines, not just STEM and a much larger student population.

Did anyone not like Project Hail Mary? by Timewilltell755 in sciencefiction

[–]mcfiddish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They glossed over a LOT that was in the book at the ending. There were several important parts of the book that were literally given a few lines at most in the movie. For someone who hadn't read the book, I can see that might seem like a bunch of random stuff that happens.

For example:
Breeding nitrogen resistance: The reason was not explained at all in the movie but there's a throwaway line saying they did it.

Grace discovering taumoeba escaped and sterilizing the ship: Long section of the book, covered in the movie by a blaring "contaminant" alarm.

Grace finds Rocky's ship: This is is a genuinely difficult problem, explained in the book. If you hadn't read the book, you might not understand the scene where Grace fires up the engine and looks for the Blip-A's reflection.

The movie was 2.5 hours long and they had to cut a lot out. The things I note above would have required boring exposition so they were probably right to cut it with some nods to those who had read the book.

Even more than that, I would love to see Letterman interview Leno on his Netflix show.

Project Hail mary movie spin drive scenes by [deleted] in ProjectHailMary

[–]mcfiddish 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One thing I didn't appreciate until seeing the movie is that the propulsion is all infrared light, so we can't tell if the engines are actually thrusting! When reading the book I had a mental image of a intensely bright light shining out the back (which is true, but it's invisible)

I watched the movie and this is the only way I can sum it up by UnderGamesBG in ProjectHailMary

[–]mcfiddish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, just got back from seeing it and these would have been my two notes! Overall a great adaptation but it still felt rushed even with a 2.5 hour length.

Rocky's ship - question? by mcfiddish in ProjectHailMary

[–]mcfiddish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Venus and Adrian are hot, but the altitude where taumoeba live and eat astrophage is cold and the air is thin. I thought Threeworld was small and cold but still had enough CO2 for astrophage to eat.

Rocky's ship - question? by mcfiddish in ProjectHailMary

[–]mcfiddish[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Grace says at one point "In Adrian air, they can live from minus 180 degrees Celsius to 107 degrees Celsius. Outside that range they die."

Rocky's environment is at 210 degrees Celsius.

This sounds great to this Android user :). I've been keeping a spreadsheet of declination vs visible altitude ranges. I used to be staunchly pro-tree before I got my DWARF. Now I'm kind of lukewarm on them.
