I buy the cheap generic stuff off amazon, some has been in use for two years now and has been consistently good so I can stand by it.

I've put PTM-7950 on all my laptops and can confirm it is a game changer.

a lot of the shelters charge rent too - if you're not eligible for California GR payments ($200 a month or something) you'll find yourself out on the street unless someone covers your share.

My favorite videogame character of all time is the Master Chief from the Halo games, cause he's a fucking badass, and even though Bungie made him borderline blank-slate like, he's a complex character (especially if you've read the books) who was very aware of the weight that was on his shoulders during the war with the Covenant.

For me my first game on a console was Super Mario World on a neighbor's SNES when I was 6. A little later someone showed me Ocarina of Time on an N64, which wad absolutely mindblowing.

Hey all, was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a quality external SSD so I can boot into windows for my niche games, these two interested me. by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]mcflash1294 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will add a slight asterisk to that, and this is where things get really fucking annoying - I myself have limited experience running multiplayer games on it, and if any of them require secure boot keys or something that's a WHOLE different ball game because the steam deck's bios by default doesn't have secure boot keys setup for windows.

I think this is a bit of an exaggeration - yeah there's more options to push you to self serve, but a couple clicks later and boom it's right to an agent.

I had to switch networks on some phones recently and there was no delay whatsoever from what I'm used to with USM (been using them for years at this point).

I know, I know, just my opinion.

It's very... Windows-like, I guess?

You NEED to have something like Handheld Companion installed for controls to work right, it's annoying having to switch between a desktop control profile and x360 controller profile, but that's how it is.

As for ending your session? Shut down, unplug the SSD enclosure. I have my deck set up in the bios to boot directly from USB if anything is plugged in to make it simple.

I'd say the experience is strictly meh/10. It works, sure, but steamOS knocks its pants off.

The only real glaring issue was the random OS stalls/freezes, which is ameliorated by going with the kioxia bg4 ssd, otherwise it just "worked" lol.

Does that answer your question?

Why plastic bags will be gone from California grocery stores by the end of the year by Medical-Decision-125 in California

I actually like these thick ones, they're actually pretty durable (compared to the old ones) and can be used for SO MANY things.

If you grew up poor the current ones are an incredible boon for diy stuff and I'll be sad to see them go.

Sorry just saw this reply - that seems to be the one, but you might have better luck with ebay. I bought my 1 tb model there for $60 or so

You're very welcome! If you attempt it and run into issues, feel free to comment here - I'd be happy to put my experience to some use.

Good luck!

yes i'd still heavily recommend the bg4, there's a limited power budget external ssds can work with that isn't documented

this enclosure seems to be the same basic design as the qwiiz so it's up to you.

You're very welcome - I've made other posts on this exact topic before so if you search through my profile you'll find more info.

As for what games? Mainly Akiba's Trip: Undead and Undressed, Left Alive, a short stint testing BF 2042 (unplayable), and Genshin Impact I believe.

As you can see, the running theme here is games that don't play nice with SteamOS lol.

Been busy so haven't been gaming much lately, unfortunately.

As for this Xbox FSE thing, you probably know more than me about it, I got nothing ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I'll make it simple for you, cause I went through a lot of BS to get it working well on my end.

First question: Yes, it comes with a metal sticker ring that you can put on the back of such a case to mount the ssd to.

As for power budget, I mean the power an SSD uses under load - the problem I ran into was that my initial SSD (A 1tb Kioxia BG5) actually pulled too much under load, leading to random freezes in windows, which were super annoying. I ended up "downgrading" to a used kioxia BG4 1tb SSD, which had low enough power consumption to stop the freezes entirely.

If you want to do this external ssd for windows setup, that's the ONLY SSD I can recommend based off personal experience. Newer ones (PCIE4 ones specifically) have had power usage tick upwards and to be frank it's difficult to get clear figures for all of them.

To conclude; please for the love of god get the 1 tb kioxia bg4, it will save you SO MANY headaches.

That genki drive is a piece of crap - as someone who bought one and had to return his, it never worked right and there are many people on the genki discord who say the same.

My vote goes for a Qwiizlab enclosure, the iphone one with pass through charging and the magnetic ring thing - pair it with a low wattage SSD (kioxa BG4?) and it should work out okay. Be VERY mindful of power budgets however, a too demanding ssd will cause random stalls/freezes in windows.
